  • @Nw-zh1uq
    @Nw-zh1uq6 ай бұрын

    Key points for the second try : Try a longsword with a wider and thicker hilt if possible or you could also use a double edged piercing Messer since messer constraction uses thick pins in the hilt constraction similar to a katana. You will also not need to go through the hassle of cutting the thread and removing the pommel. Then modify the wooden katana handle on the inside so it allows for the centered European style blade. For example grind out part of the wood on one side then add some on the other side to make it centered. To allow for a for double bladed technics use special ring design tsubas that have big holes in them making them look like the ring guards on late medieval European swords. This would allow the thumb to finger/lay flat on the blade from the inside of the tsuba with no need to extend over it. With this the problems this sword has are pretty much removed and the new weapon is ready. Personally I like this design since I prefer rondel dagger/gladius push stabs (the gladius ball guard though is kinda ass though) that use the guard as a stopper instead of the handshake grip. The reason is that the handshake grip for me personally feels alot less secure for stabbing and kinda hurts when you stab into hard targets. Sure it gives more range but I prefer the feeling of "gutting and skewering someone" over the feeling of poking someone. No I am not british. Example Jorge Sprave made a spike dagger that uses the push/gutting stab to puncture holes in thick aluminium plates and mild steel plates. In his video can anti-stab vests protect officers. Lets not forget thanks to the ring Tsuba design you are also allowed to use the handshake grip since you can finger the guard with your thumb.

    Honestly, I'd love to see a version of this sword that has been made from scratch so that its issues will have been lessened . For example ,i forget katana terms, but if you make that metal bit beneath the tsuba longer, that would give you a place to put your thumb to do the technique you were showing. Also making the tsuba resemble a crossgard by lengthening it would make the blade more usable in a European style of swordplay (i believe this could possibly cause a problem with the tsubas strength so it may need better fixtures) I also think that the slightly curved nature of the handle led to the 'zippy' since the blade would be (if held like a normal katana) slightly angled, leading to a 'drawing/slicing' motion while swinging the sword, another thing is if the technique shad was showing could be done with that sword then as the handle is curved the follow-up cut would be very slightly quicker as it is very slightly closer (as the blade would be angled to one direction slightly) I think the last comment i wrote about isnt that great of a positive but the angle of the blade lending to better slicing (in one direction) is a benifit in my opinion (i got this idea from professional chef's who use knives on a daily basis to cut hard and soft things effectively and consistently with minimal effort). I just realised as I'm writing this, isn't that one of the reasons the katana is shaped as it is.😅

    My thoughts: You made the original katana re-hilt and said it was an abomination. But you went back and found a better fit blade and hilt and it is awesome. So find a blade that would be a good match to the katana hilt, even if that might mean custom making some parts to make it look and feel good. Even if you don't like it in the end, that will settle to debate of abomination or not.

    I think the name 'Katalon" is the most fitting as it is a shortened form of the term Katana-Longsword as well as being properly pronounceable. If you were to invert the sword construction as done previously the method still applies-Longsword Katana or "Longtana" for short. Simply swap the placement of the terms for which is the main sword type in the example at hand with the first name being the modifier of the following sword type.

Maybe just a cross guard with an extremely shortened cross, not one that is short enough to be in functional but shorter than you would ever see a European cross guard. Just some potential thoughts either way very creative and positivity experimental idea! Keep up the good work! Awesome video!

The tsurugi was the descendant of the tang dynasty longswords, the Tang being the chinese dynasty which settled Japan, eventually driving out or incorporating the native Ainu. @@Sukenus While I do think European sword design is better, largely as the cross and other hand guards are massively protective in comparison to the Japanese swords I'm not sold the pommel would be required or even the best option. That then implies a European construction method for the whole handle and there is something positive in user feel on striking a target to the wooden dowel construction. So a riveted on or forged integral to the blade cross guard above a Katana style hilt may actually work out to be the best of both worlds for the blades that are light enough to not absolutely need that counterweight.

Or you end up with having to leave a deliberate gap to allow some movement in the fit up so that katana hilt can still do its thing - which will probably pinch at some point. In both cases just building it the European way at that point seems better to me at that point. Always nice to see it tested of course, and there are so many ways you may try to add some of the counterweight of a pommel in construction technique, even if that 'pommel' is actually just part of the tang as you see in some messer where the base of the hilt flairs out a bit and may well be by far the thickest steel in the knife.
