    Based on how Miyamoto Musashi talks about swords, I've often thought that he might have wielded his katana more like a military saber than a longsword. To that end I'd like to see a swept-hilt or basket-hilt katana and wakizashi combo.

    That's the thing, this clickbait channel tries to get you to click by saying dumb things like "katana SUCKS, we made it BETTER!" when in reality the katana wasnt supposed to be used like a longsword where youd get into these grapple binds with a huge cross guard. If that's what you find yourself doing when katana sparring then you're doing it wrong. Obviously the Japanese didn't feel the need to have a larger guard otherwise they would have made them larger easily. And we do find examples with larger guards occasionally.

    Doubt it. He emphasized using a shorter than average katana with both hands for control and speed over anything else. His dual wielding gimmick is just that, a gimmick; when talking about real.combat he preferred things that were more reliable and gave the user the most options, including grappling.

  • @yashuacanno8019

    @yashuacanno8019

    7 ай бұрын

    @@leonardomarquesbellini That's literally the opposite of what Musashi says in his book. He emphasized learning to wield a sword in one hand from the start of your training. He says he doesn't like two-handing a sword, because it limits your movements and restricts your hands. He actually says that it's not speed, but rhythm that wins a duel; striking too fast makes your blows sloppy and too much power puts you off balance. As far as calling dual wielding a gimmick, rapier/dagger duelists would disagree. Regardless, the way Musashi views it, he effectively said that because the swordsmen of his country wore two swords, it's better to use both to survive, than to die with one of them dangling uselessly at your side. There's a whole lot more evidence for Musashi's dueling style being one-handed, but I'm not writing an essay here. If you take the time to read Musashi's words, there's no way you could mistake that his dueling style was anything other than one-handed. He probably didn't dual-wield in all situations, but I'm very certain he preferred one-handed, because he said so himself and I'll take his word over yours.

If he'd re-riveted the scales after trimming them to match the exact shape of the tang (I'd hate to try wielding a sword with that thin of a handle) then it'd be a messer. "Scimitar" really is just a term to imply a xenos (alien, as in from outside of Western Europe) manufacture to add a "coolness" and awe factor to something that really isn't all that different from what was made locally.

    Yeah, the depictions of a "tachi" that I'm seeing online are more about the handle part being complimentary to the blade part's curvature. Even the ones that seem to have straight looking handles still imply a little bit of curvature at the ends of them and I guess it comes from the hilt's curved or curved-ish (at the end of it I mean) shape inside.

    Personally I think it would have been better to just made a tsuba with a crossguard. Inspired by a crossguard with dual side rings. I'm picturing a larger more protective version of the Musashi style tsuba with quillons. That way it wouldn't be moving as far away from its traditional Japanese design. But rather, keeping the overall Japanese design and feel, but bringing in the idea of more hand protection.

Also, it was ugly as hell and blatantly just a tsuba and a crossguard that were never intended to go together, slapped together on a single sword.. What I'm picturing could be made from a single piece of 5-8mm sheet steel. By either cutting it out by hand, milling it or laser cutting it out. Some filing work to round over the edges. Then assemble the sword.

    Would be cool to see same thing but with katana hand wrap instead of simple thin cord. Probably would have been able to improve balance by starting with oversized pommel and grind it off, checking balance till you get it right. That or could do a sectioned pommel where one could add spacer weights to tune balance slightly forward or back. Loved the format, excellent episode! Tachimitar maybe? Only need to drop the s from scimitar and h jump one place forward to interlock both. Tashadtar to bring channel into it!

    Basically a heron marked sword. The bevel of a katana would be the best design on a sword that never loses its edge and is almost indestructible, and the European guard design would be the ideal hand protection. Though I think a complex guard more akin to a swiss saber would better pair with a long o-katana like blade for a fantasy sword like the heron marked blade.
