Can you chop down a tree with a SWORD?!? |

Just because we've said you shouldn't chop wood with swords doesn't mean you can't, and in this video we test that to the extreme!

    @@stefthorman8548 Mass and weight are not the same. Mass is a measurement of how much matter an object contains, not how heavy it is. But let me clarify my statement. The falchion and broadsword are wider than the katana. The katana is a longer but narrower sword, so its overall mass may be similar, but at the point of impact where the sword strikes the tree, the other two have more mass. More mass equals more force. I am by no means a physicist so feel free to correct me, but that was my thinking when I made the statement.

  • @kikixchannel

    @kikixchannel

    Жыл бұрын

    @@KoshoShinogi Um...Katana does have more mass... You're right in that mass is not the same as weight. But that's mostly all you are correct on. In a world where gravity exists, objects with more mass will be heavier. That's because weight IS just mass times the gravitational force (which is equal). An object with twice the mass will also be twice as heavy. Furthermore, going by their size and balance, katana is more dense so there's even MORE mass at the point of impact. Because there's more mass in smaller part of the small blade. This is exactly the crux with a katana. Its density, stiffness and being blade-heavy makes it a good cutter, but far more fragile and less 'agile' than western blades.

Since Nate mentioned that he isn't very familiar with one sided swords at the end, I'd love to see you guys do a video on 18th/19th century cavalry sabers. Not sure how familiar you are with the topic, but it's just a suggestion anyways.

    It would have been interesting to see how a Chinese (two-handed) dao would have done, since they seem like they'd be tailor made for chopping. Also a guandao would be fascinating, but I'd imagine if you had one on hand you'd not be keen to use it for such a test.

    Funny the Kramer running gag. Several videos now. I once wrote a scene in a book about a sword smith sharpening a sword after his son used it to chop down a tree. Thus requiring him to sharpen it. Fun to watch someone actually sort of living out a part of that. Now I’m curious on how hitting the wood affected the actual blades. How much damage was done to the edges?

    I expected the swords to wind up bent in all sorts of unnatural ways, but it seems they held up quite nicely. Now my only question left is: sharp axe vs sharp sword, which holds their edge longer? If they're relatively close, then the only real advantages the axe would have is more material available to grind away, meaning a longer working life, and the cost. Well, this has officially updated the idea of "never use a sword to chop wood" into "in an emergency situation, a blade is a blade".

    Realistically, specific swords aside, it should just be the sword that is most axe-like, which in the blade would be something like a kriegsmesser, or even more exaggerated would be maciejowski falchion. That kriegsmesser handle does look painful, though, both the material and the shape.

    16:59 EXACTLY, modern mono steel are indeed simply way better than folded steel that lacks purity. This tree cutting test has given us quite a big info that having the same material factor, katana blade profile proved to be just as good if not better in cutting & chopping compare to longsword blade profile.
