I appreciate that you guys took the time to do this. As a rope dart practitioner, I'd like to give some notes. The way Scorpion uses his "spear" in MK is pretty atypical for a rope dart. He uses it tethered to his lead hand with no slack or tail line, throws underhand, and pulls the opponent in. These aren't really how you use a rope dart. However, in MK11 Scorpion does use a few real rope dart techniques, such as rising elbow twine into reverse elbow shot, and a lead foot shot. If you want to use a rope dart properly, keep in mind that a rope dart is usually not a sharp knife, but rather a pointed weight. A bit like arrow tips for target practice. The length of the rope should be double your arm span or close to it. Optimal length should be measured by tethering to your off hand (called "anchor") the laying across your arms in a T pose. The dart head should either barely touch the floor or swing 1-4 inches about the ground from this position. For a standard "home" position, think of the rope as 3 parts of equal length. The part going from the head to your lead hand is called the lead. From you lead hand to your anchor hand is called the slack. The part held looped in your anchor hand is called the tail. A home position is when you stand with your shoulders squared and the dart swinging either downward (home position 1) or upward (home position 2) at a perpendicular angle to your shoulders. That is known as "wheel plane". To do a rising/underhand shot like you're attempting in the video, spinning the lead upward (home position 2), release at about a 45 degree angle as the dart is rising toward your front and bring you lead and anchor hand together in a point, releasing the slack and tail as it flies. This will ensure that the dart flies straight and will also put your anchor hand in position to cleanly retrieve your shot without scraping the ground if you miss. As for your comments as to whether an overhand shot is valid, it absolutely is for rope dart practitioners and it a more powerful shot overall than the underhand cast. If want more insight on how to dart from a fellow Australian that you may be able to collaborate with, look up Aaron Stanger (Stanger_things_flows on Instagram). He's an excellent dartist and I'm sure you could learn a lot about this from him if that appeals to you.

There is in Chinese martial arts such a weapon. It is usually referred to as "rope dart". It is similar to another form known as "chain whip". Typically the form involves spinning the weapon, using body posturing to 'wind up' the weapon, then a motion to 'fire' it off.

It's all about controlling the tip of the weapon and keeping enough speed so the centrifugal force can impart more energy. Also knowing exactly where and when to allow slack to fling it forward. I made one out of a broken pocket knife and a couple boot laces and spent hours practicing with it. So fun. Probably couldn't actually use it in a fight, but I'm a menace to trees everywhere.

When you throw an object attached to a rope, you should throw the rope with the object. That way the mass of the rope won't drag down the object. Loop most of the length of the rope in your hand so that you can still grasp the object and leave enough slack so you won't tug your other hand when you throw the bundle. The rope will then uncoil as it flies and let the object fly without pulling the rope from the gound.

  • @castle6660

Yeah don't listen to this guy LOL you do not wrap the majority of the Rope around your wrist and it will uncoil as you throw it... Not gonna work. You leave the Rope hanging... One end is tied to your wrist... The other end is in your hand spinning the rope with maybe 3 feet of rope and the dart being swung with your right hand... The rest of the Rope should be hanging with plenty of Slack.

I will also say, you should look at the different kunai versions in Mortal Kombat 11, there are some that have hooks. That's gonna help pulling someone closer. Also, the scorpion throw kinda works, works really well on short distances, but over long distances, swirling it on the rope like shad works way better, builds up way more energy, but the problem was that shad obviously didn't hit with the point. To fix that, you can crack it back almost like a whip, that will pull on the back end up and back, so the point is aimed pretty much towards the target at the cost of a little bit of energy. Trust me, I've tried. It also helps if you wear bracers or armbands and attach the rope to the bracer, because you will inevitably at some point lose focus and drop the rope.

I hope you'll do a follow-up video to this where rather than testing a fictional version you try out the real-life inspiration. Rope darts are a real thing and you can find YT videos showing you everything about how to use them from stances to planes and spin to trick shots. If you want to try this one again, Karate Mart has a scorpion-inspired chain dart, and rope dart academy has silk darts, but those are for practice, most often used by those that practice the dance version of rope dart but also useful for practicing before using a martial arts rope dart. It should be said, though, that a rope would never be attached to the top of a spear like that to make a rope dart. 😛

Despite not liking it, i understood it, since Shad's health problems made it difficult for him to do all the physical things this channel may need. However, it's videos like this that prove how better the content has got. The continuous banter between you three is hilarious, and it's like watching three nerds having fun with throwing swords and shooting flaming arrows. Which you three are, in fact, and it's great. @@FuknKms It's true that 'weapons' were banned (for non-samurai) at some point in Japan's history when ninja did exist. It is true that many weapons used during those times were simply tools repurposed into weaponry. But hey, seriously? Did any ban ever really succeed at what it was intended properly? There are always people that would go against the law. That being said, ninja's weren't really much of a fighter. They were first and foremost spies, secondarily, assassins. Things that are considered 'weapons' of the ninja were often really just 'tools'. Shurikens? Not weapons at all. Distraction tools, nuisance to irritate, but not meant for damage. Caltrops? Obviously purely deterrent. No one sane would assume the enemy would just run into them. Kunai? Its use closest to a 'weapon' was assassination. Throwing a kunai was mostly done not to attack but as a tool, for example to throw a rope over a branch etc (not to say that it cannot be thrown to hurt, of course, since it can, just that ninja's weren't really doing it if they could avoid it).

I think you would rethink your rating if he was with you guys doing the same challenge. If they catch the chain and close in you're screwed. Yeah you can try pulling in, but at that point they can also do the same thing. The difference being that the Kunai is on their side of the chain and they presumably have their own weapon in their main hand. A weapon like this is only really does well in grappling range and long range. The main drawback is missing. Hypothetically if you magically had 100% accuracy that would be better, but at that point you could give that advantage to any thrown weapon.

@@timevalentime1806 When I say you can pull an opponent who grabs the rope, I am only referring to someone you have hit and stuck the blade inside them. An expert is capable of returning the dart back to themselves as fast as they can toss it, and they will always be deceptive in how they toss it. Catching it while not outside of human capability, is incredibly unlikely and a poor choice.

I wasn't countering your point about pulling in after hitting the target. You're talking about a master throwing it, but if we were to have an opponent with equal skill they'd be able to react to that. Really they don't even need to catch it. All they'd have to do is run in the moment they see that the attack isn't going to hit them. Let's give the guy with the Kunai the benefit of the doubt and say that he's fast enough to not only pull it back before the oppent reaches him, but also get back into a defensive stance (I'm assuming that he'd do this instead of trying to make the Kunai hit the person on the way back because that really wouldn't do much damage and he'd be screwed. If you do want further elaboration on why just ask). At this point the opponent would be at striking range. Now the likelihood of survival depends on what weapon the opponent has. If they have a sword, the Kunai person is fucked since they'd be far enough for the kunai to be at a disadvantage while close enough that trying to throw would be a terrible idea. If they have a spear maybe you could argue that the person with the Kunai could try and back up to reset, but people move significantly faster forward than they do backward, so that's not really a good idea. The person's best chance at that point is closing in since their Kunai would have the advantage in close range against a spear. Actually they probably would have a good shot against a spear since they could hypothetically try to bind it with their chain and close in. At that point the person with the spear would be at a severe disadvantage. Yeah a spear is probably one of the more plausible weapons to go against since the kunai can be thrown out of reach of the spear while still having the advantage in close range.

It's amazing seeing Nate go mega nerd like (maybe a little more than) tyrinth does when he talks about anime. The best part is Nate's bad at throwing but out shines tyrinth at basically every opportunity. The consistent nut shots are absolutely amazing and in a way on target. Have a good rest of y'all's day.

I can't help but feel the throwing knife technique, of seating the weapon across the palm and up the fingers, and using the momentum of a hard fast reaching forward to release it.. nice & straight, all momentum going forward.

I dunno why, but also am so thankful this popped up on my recommended feed today, 1/1/24. Brings back so many fond memories of my MK playing days. Also, I have a deeper appreciation now of how easy I actually had it, all I had to do to make it work was a simple input command of “back, back, punch” on my controller 😁

I think your throw would be a lot more powerful if you also throw the rope along with the spearhead or kunai. As it is now, all it does is drag it down because you impart ZERO force with it and it only saps energy from the throw of the projectile.

I thought you'd mention it in the video but there is an actual historical weapon similar to this. The Chinese Rope Dart. Master practicioners of it can do some really wicked moves with it. Although the efficiency of the weapon is up for debate.

  • @Kiljaedenas
    @Kiljaedenas7 ай бұрын

One key nerd-ism to consider, I believe within the lore of the game that rope of Scorpion's is a symbiotic living entity, not just a plain dagger on a chain. It is able to adjust its own speed and angle/direction mid flight, so you'd have a hard time emulating that.

I have a recommendation for a pair of weapons to try out, but they may be difficult to get a hold of, as they're kinda rare. They are Jet's hook swords from Avatar the Last Airbender. They appear to be Shaolin in origin, and they are also used by Kabal from Mortal Kombat.

This kind of thing is what I always houserule the super silly "spiked chain" for D&D 3.5 to actually be. Even without any testing this design made far more sense than a bunch of double hooks chained together.

No need for house rules(Oh I misread the edition) 5th edition has a feat called Tavern Brawler that gives improvised weapons proficiency and you can make a grab as an attack action using that improvised weapon. The rules for grabbing have no specifications on distance other than it has to be within reach and certain mons have 10ft reach. Nobody seems to have asked for details from the devs.(Good, this way it's RaW) So you take the kunai w/ chain as an improvised weapon with 15ft range, a D4 and you can make the grab with it. If you wanted to fully "cosplay" Scorp in 5e you can do it with ShMonk 6/ Fiend Bladelock 14 with your warlock item being the kunai w/ chain. If your DM is chill, you can take Fighter like, EK 20 and just rip the class features from your fiend bladelock shadow monk. As a way to get four attacks.
