When I read the title I thought "No way!" As a martial artists with over 30 years of experience, and a true fan of Nunchucks (well, at least for all those years before 24-yrs old), I can absolutely claim that they are the worse weapon I've ever trained with. Flashy? Yes. Fun? Oh yeah. But for self-defense or simply weapon-fighting, they're garbage. No matter who or what I have to face: human (empty-handed or armed), animal, zombies, dragons... I'd rather use a crowbar or a simple eskrima stick than these self-hurting thingy. Oh well, it was such a relieve to hear what Shad said in the beginning of the video ;)

I mean you said flashy and fun, which is the least effective way to use nunchaku. In simplest terms, most people see kung fu movies and believe that is the way. However, no it's at first a farm tool for threshing, in combat though it can be used to entangle and snare weaponry as well as disarming. Then it can be used to club people, swing on it's chain for advanced leverage swings, and strangle people. Now as a war weapon it's not useful at all, but as a general weapon it is. There is a huge distinction there.

knowing how martial arts movies flourish their choreography as a way of stating "This man is above the rest", I'm willing to say, they intentionally flourished Bruce Lee's mastery. that's not Bruce Lee being expert with nunchucks, that's the movie applying visual embellishment to the product, and we fell for it. it's like finding an old scripture that states "and man produced object out of thin air!" without knowing that *they* might have *NOT* known that was a trick, and that one cannot produce things out of thin air, and mistake it for the truth.

A sword is only moderately useful without any training, because without edge control, it's basically a worse version of a metal stick. That does not make the sword a worse weapon than a metal stick. The capabilities of an untrained user should not be the standards that determine what is or isn't a good weapon. That being said, it is *a* factor in a weapon's utility. A club's greater effectiveness in the hands of an untrained user are one of the club's greatest advantages, and nobody can take that away from Mr. Club (if you try, you'll get bashed inelegantly about the head). The nunchuck's ineffectiveness in the hands of an untrained user is likewise a point against it. But it isn't the whole argument by itself. I agree with Shad overall, but I think that a few times over the course of the video he did overstate his case in this regard.

I want to give respect to both of you. For you recognizing the optics of your channel "going after" a new content creator and having the respect to reach out to him beforehand and letting him see how you would approach. Such professionalism is not common. And for him to accept and be open to being criticked by someone with the presence you have. I am a new subscriber to Shadiversity and I am happy to see I didn't make a bad choice. Now for my thoughts, as someone who has fought with a pencil, with a stick, with a sword, and with chucks, (I am not referring to sparring)... I would rather have the chucks than the pencil, they do keep the opponent at bay due to their speed, but a quick step in and the pencil becomes more lethal very fast. Next a sword is better than the pencil and chucks, but give me a 6' staff and I will be much more confident in an altercation than with the other mentioned weapons. It just works best for me. I agree that the mystification of Asian martial arts has caused a very skewed public viewpoint of their effectiveness, but I am not disparaging as I used to train in Chi Lu Chuan Kung-Fu and see many benefits of the teachings. But they are not the magical, borderline superheros that some people seem to have a mental image of in their minds.

Nunchaku were farm tools that were used as a weapon for lack of anything better. They did have ONE advantage over a flail when holding one of each side in each hand the target will not know which hand the attack will come from, that being said it doesn't make up for the shear power of a flail. I have read some material that suggests the sticks were originally much longer as well like walking stick to staff length. Which if true would change the metrics significantly.

  • @EdwinHofstra

I own a copy of 'Western (Chinese) fighting stick arts' on video-cd.* Some very impressive masters demonstrate the use of traditional fighting sticks of various lengths and girth. Halfway the video a master of nunchaku is introduced. He's the last of his line and he's ancient, and the sticks he uses are huge in comparison. Each stick is as long as his lower leg. When he goes to that stance where the practitioner holds the weapon with one hand over the shoulder and the other under the armpit, the defensive capabilities suddenly become apparent: his whole upper body and his head are protected from blows. And he can reverse sides in a split second. I my country nunchaku are known as strangulation sticks and they are outlawed as a lethal weapon. With old style nunchaku you could trap a man's arm and break it. So yes, excellent improvised defense weapon, and if you were a farmer in those days, it would probably make sense to become proficient on them, though I suspect they would be rather reactionary. Oppertunities for initiative are what make a real weapon.

They're intimidating if you're unarmed, but so is a knife, a stick, a baseball bat or a rock that the guy continuously gestures to chuck at you. You can wrap your jacket around your arm or throw your boot in there and have a fairly good way to disrupt the nunchuck spin after which the time needed to get the nunchuck back on track to deliver a strike would provide you with enough time to close the distance. Maybe you'll get an ouchie on your wrist/ankle but that's it. The spin doesn't have enough momentum to cause any serious, disabling damage. The guy in the motorcycle theft video pretty much proves how possible that is.

When i was a teenager, i lived in a somewhat troublesome area. Muggins were a daily occurrence. I had the bright idea of using a bunch of old *keys* attached to a medium length strap as a weapon for self defense and the way i used it functioned very similarly in form to how one would wield a nunchuk. So i would walk around with this chain of keys and nobody suspected my actual intentions. The police wouldn't stop me or take it away since, it was just a bunch if keys. The first time i needed them was when i was crossing a remote bridge, that was a common ground for muggins, because it was very easy to trap someone on the bridge cutting their escape. I was in the middle of the bridge when i see two men entering the bridge in front of me, and i look back and see another one coming from the other end. I thought to myself "right, let's do this". Long story short, those guys all ended up with bloody face and head. No matter how they tried they couldn't come near me without being hit by a rain of blows to the face and head. They eventually run away leaving trails of blood behind them. Their faces completely wrecked with deep slaches. To my surprise my "weapon" was surprisingly efficient at 1 vs multiple. After it was over, many of the keys were either broken or completely bent and twisted because of the force generated by the flailing.

Supposedly, the num-chuks (Nunchucks) were originally rice beaters. The Japanese would NOT allow the Okinawans to have swords, so they hid the chains and attached them when they saw an attack coming. Also, they are a lot easier to hide than a long stick. The Sai was the top of a fishing spear. A lot of the times the wooden pole may break, but the metal spear would stay and the peasants had to learn BOTH ways of fighting with them. The Okinawans still train with boat oars, because that is what they had. The Kama was for cutting wheat. And etc. They had little to fight with, so they used those things around them to the best of their ability.

They were heroes to some and criminals to others. Either way, I do NOT believe that they invented Nunchaku/Nunchucks. Just like they didn't invent a medium straight sword or Shuriken. The only reason he's being respectful to Shad is because that is in more of a public eye. He couldn't give a crap about actual debate, if you read Milani's responses to other people.

Honestly Shad is taking way worse about a stick than necessary, sticks are probably solid B rank weapon just considering the fact that edge alignment is a non issue. Every inch of the stick is the danger zone and I feel he's being unjust saying even a bad stick is comparable to nun chucks. Edit: I have since realized the only downside is no pommel with which to end someone rightly

Nunchuks were adopted, IIRC, because the peasantry in Japan were disarmed in the "Sword Hunt" and not allowed to be armed or even defend themselves . The nunchuks are really just rice-threshing tools used to get the husk off rice grains. It was carried as a weapon because it was marginally better than a bare hand and could be passed off as an agricultural tool if the user was stopped and questioned. In short, it was a covert desperation weapon used by people not legally allowed to defend themselves at all. Its sole purpose was to give a plausibly deniable way to carry a massively inferior weapon that would at least give someone a slight chance of surviving if they were attacked by bandits or an ornery samurai. Quite the opposite of some secret martial arts super-weapon, it's a non-weapon pressed into service as a marginal weapon to circumvent draconian laws intended to make the common people completely helpless.

@@kevg1617 A lot of people don't. But on that point, for throwing nunchuks on the ground to be disrespectful to an entire culture would require them to be so culturally significant that we would commonly see them throughout that culture's public forms of expression. Yet, in Japan's case we don't see them very often in their films. anime, manga, etc. Something doesn't add up in terms of their supposed cultural significance.
