REPLY to Game Theory: Is A Shield Your BEST Weapon? (Assassin's Creed Valhalla)

Matpat from Game Theory has made a video with a few factual errors about the effectiveness of duel-wielding's axes and shields, and if an arrow shot from a longbow could take off someone's head.

Just putting it in the comments. Shad's book "Shadow of the Conquerer" is one of THE best books I've read. I'm patiently waiting on the next one. For real if you're on the edge of buying it, just do it. You won't regret it. Sincerely, some random guy on the internet. :)

I'll defend the arrow one. If that;s all the relevant contents that bit didn't seem like an historic claim. also I'm accurate enough with a bow to get a neck shot and I haven't done much of it all i'd have to do his aim for the chest and get jammy. Onto of this the guy doing it is most likely a bloodline assassin and so probably literally superhuman. I'd be willing to bet money an psychic powers in terms of more than humanly strong or accuracy i wouldn't actually put money on it.

Shad, you’ve really grown as a person and I can see that. Just 2 years ago you were the type of person to go “this is the answer, this and only this.” Now you’re more mellow, more of a “this is the source I present, it may not be true or false, but this is the best we got. I may be wrong, I may be right,” kind of guy. I really appreciate what you do for everyone here, all the heat you go through just for being informative. Your book is amazing and I wish you the best days possible!

@@ForeverDegenerate Slight correction, the concept of accuracy not mattering with shotguns is a video game-ism, in video games, shotguns have incredibly short range and very high pellet spread, but IRL, it's quite the opposite. That's not to say shotguns are long range, 'cause they're not, not unless you're using slugs, at least, but they have much more range than video games would have you believe. Also, being guaranteed a hit means considerably less IRL, there are hundreds of cases of people being shot 20+ times with a handgun and they're still able to stand. Granted, that's with handguns, rifles and shotguns would generally have more stopping power, but the point still stands.

@@davedave8986 Spear is the best formation weapon, though what's the "best" weapon is debatable. It's cheap, piss easy to make (a sharp point on a stick), synergizes extremely well with shields, can be used on foot and cavalry...but also overly reliant on being used in mass and has no design tricks for any utility uses such as disarmament, armor breaking, or even the ability to slash/chop. For the most part the main selling point of the spear is that you can levy any random group of untrained peasants, give them spears and shields, and just tell them to either hold still or run forwards because that's all they need to know for proper spear usage. It's simplicity at its best. The main problem is that it has almost no ability to fight outside of a grouped up formation, hence why spearmen always had backup weapons to adapt to different scenarios since you do not want to only have a spear if your sides aren't covered. This was so bad that halberds were made to just to try to remedy this. So while big army clashing fights have spears as the mvp, most battles weren't this (in fact most battles avoided this at all costs because its the most costly form of warfare in terms of lives lost) so you kind of want to carry a few different weapons per soldier.

i think the main point and difference is that most of the times when people Dual wield it's kinda in the moment and because there is no other better option and Mat admitted that saying how it is better then nothing, what I think he's trying to say is (I didn't do any research on this btw just guessing so not a fact) no one really went into battle choosing the option of Dual wield over having a shield. I don't think many people when getting ready to fight picked 2 swords as their weapon choice, it just kinda happened when they lost their shield and all that, I don't know maybe I'm wrong lol.

Eskrima is a bit different. Traditionally duel welding sucks because a weapon is less effective than a shield at preventing damage and is designed to take the impacts. weapons are designed to inflict damage, and are less suited to a defensive action such as blocking. Most sword school teach parrying which is not blocking but redirection in order to mitigate the damage that can be done to you while opening up your opponent to taking damage. Now duel welding knifes is different and used in a different way typically not on an open battlefield. Eskrima is a bit the same since it was designed to be used in very close proximity in jungle type environments. On an open battlefield against a sword and shield eskrima is gonna get rolled if both combatants are equally skilled unless the eskrima fighter moves to hand to hand techniques to disarm their opponent. Then it might go the other way but in armor it's going to be hard to do damage like that. Besides 2 handing an ax or sword is more effective than 2 weapons because if the multiplication of force exerted.

At least when I'm talking about theories of his that I know about, and seeing how he is about video games and I do know a bit about them... that includes most of his theories.
