We Camped Out On The Border To See What The So-Called Crisis Looks Like (HBO)

In his never-ending push for a border wall, President Trump regularly warns of dangerous criminals pouring into the country, and horrific things happening to migrants when they try to make the journey north. Like women getting kidnapped, thrown into cars, and smuggled across unwalled sections of the border.
He told one such harrowing tale on live TV in the Rose Garden on January 25. He was announcing a temporary end to the government shutdown, but the assembled reporters were also treated to a minute-long yarn about kidnapped migrants.
Scary stuff (if unsubstantiated). So in the spirit of fact-checking, VICE News’ Alzo Slade went to the bootheel of New Mexico, an area that's seen an increase in Central American migrants seeking asylum in recent months, to hear if its residents had seen anything resembling Trump’s claims.
Spoiler alert: They hadn’t.
But just to be thorough, Alzo pitched a tent along an unwalled section of the border separating the U.S. from Mexico to see if he could catch those “criminal cartels, narco-terrorists, transnational gangs like MS-13 and human traffickers” the president says are pouring over the unwalled border before “they make a left or a right into the United States of America.”
What Alzo saw won’t surprise you either.

Oh that's right because people like you use them as a political ploy but don't actually care. Thanks to programs like SSVF and HUD-VASH the amount of homeless Veterans are decreasing significantly. And according to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans, 11% of the homeless population are Veterans, so that's not the "majority" but you seem like the type who doesn't understand basic math. Save your fake, uneducated outrage for someone who wants to hear it, nopalera maria. A border shutdown is a horrible idea considering we get a lot of our fresh produce from Mexico. Hachita New Mexico has a population of 49 and an elevation of 4,500 feet. It is 45 miles north of Antelope Wells, NM, on State Road 81, which is located at the Mexico border. Antelope Wells, population 2 (not a typo - population "two") is at an elevation of 4,665 feet. Aside from antelope, mountain goats and mountain lions I'm not sure exactly who or what would go there - somehow I don't think the cartels are doing a booming drug business in the boot heel of New Mexico. SR 81 is the only road that crosses the border between Hachita and Columbus, New Mexico (elevation 4,000 ft.) 45 miles to the east of Hachita (State Road 11) traveling along NM State Road 9. All of Grant County New Mexico has a population of 27,000, of which nearly half live in and around Silver City, New Mexico, which is 137 miles by road north of Antelope Wells and the border. So it's an easy fix to get them to go home and stay there if you don't have the proper paperwork to be in this country it's a capital offense which can carry the death sentence make that the law .they'll start trying to fix their own country. I asked a Mexican that was up here working who was actually here legal why the Mexican people don't do something to fix their own country and his response was, it would be hard. C'mon Vice, this is not good journalism. Traveling to one part of New Mexico and asking a handful of people is pitiful. It's undeniable the atrocities the gangs take part in and organize, but do you really think for one second that these dark sides of the gangs are flaunted out in the open for the public to witness? Secondly, it's also undeniable that we have illegal immigrants crossing the southern border, some good people, some bad. Saying "after a long night on the dangerous border" is showing the true colors of this video. When I want to watch news about current events, I want to see whats happening from both sides. Yes there are people trying to immigrate for asylum purposes and, they are not the majority of migrants crossing illegally. The main thorofair for illegal immigration is the open areas in the border fence but, gangs and drug cartels use tunnels to bring their people and product across the border. If we put up a fence/wall ,or slats whatever you want to call it, the people who go through those tunnels will expose them and we can better find the criminal tunnels. They cartels cycle them and, most people south of the border know about them the barrier will increase the tunnel traffic exposing them better. The cartels will eventually protect them from migrant use and, then we have them. That is what I think the administration is doing, or attempting to do. It is a darker route bit, it would be far more effective than the current tact we are using to stop the cartels. That doesn't mean I agree with it but, I challenge you to find a more efficient tactic.

By your logic then the "border crisis" could never be observed because simply having a couple people there is more than enough to keep illegals from crossing. So following YOUR logic we absolutely do not need a wall. We just need guard stations. Thank you for you contribution to dispelling the myth that we need a wall.

I used to live on Williams Island in Aventura, Fl just north of Miami. It was regular to see a speed boat roar into the little bay area behind my condominium and see 8-12 men emerge from the waters, climb the dock and disappear into the streets of the United States.

That happens on the other side of the border. ¿How do I know? I have seen it and lived it. I lived in different places in Mexico and believe me, what Trump is talking about is just a little bit of what goes on, I’ve seen murders, kidnappings and robberies taking place in broad daylight and people most of the time pretend they didn’t see a thing because they fear being targeted by the cartels and crime organizations. Believe me, some people look innocent when they are actually running a drug operation or something. You really never know what’s behind people’s doors.

James Guilford you don’t get the point I’m trying to come across, look James if you’re going to do a documentary on border violence from a city like the one they are showing that is 2,000 miles away from the border you aren’t going to get anything else that they don’t need a wall. You say that it it illegal and dangerous for people to live outdoors? Let me ask you a question where are you from? Are there any homeless where you live at? Another question do you even live next to a border area where you can see Mexico straight across from less than 2000 feet? Look man this documentary is biased and you don’t even see it. You do know if they revamp security it means more jobs and more tax payers money as well as it would be with the wall, both cost money what do you want in return? An investment that’s quite capable of being beneficial towards security and outside threats. I could keep going but I’m just gonna let it slide.

If that scout of mine came back to me and said, "There are a couple of assholes in a tent, let's go ten more miles down," I would probably go ten more miles before I sent my scout out again to look for suspicious people camped out at the boarder. Now, I'm not a human trafficker, so maybe I'm missing something, but seriously, I wouldn't want to be caught doing something illegal by people I don't know. If I was doing something extremely illegal, I would make damn sure no one saw.
