We Built an Aluminium Boat, from Nothing to Sea Trials in 11 Minutes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We built a 12ft Aluminium boat because we couldn't get to our big boat in the lockdowns. Of course we recorded the whole thing and here's the first video.
It's going to be the tender/dinghy for the big boat. The design is by Rick Welin of (www.metalboatkits.com)
We'll be making other videos about this one soon, so if you have questions about it put them in the comments. We'll also be posting an update video soon too.
Hope you are all keeping well, thanks for being so patient.
A few extra details if you are interested: (Video with more details to follow soon)
The design is by Rick Welin from
Rick was very helpful during the build, would definitely recommend!
We used 4mm Aluminium 5083 which is a marine specific grade. The tube etc was 6063 and 6061.
We Tig welded the whole thing as that's what we had to use, not ideal but got the job done.
Filler for marine aluminium welding is 5356.

    Most small aluminium boats of this type are constructed with keel, chine and gunwale extruded sections. These extrusion facilitate the sheet metal fitment for welding, thus making for a stronger build. In the past sixty years or so the mass production of hundreds of thousands of recreational boats have been constructed with this proven method. Quintrex, Stacer, Stessel, Clark are just some aluminium boat brand found in Australia. Cheers

    That's where I (Duncan) work, my boss very kindly let me use it on weekends. We actually recently sold the Promecam to upgrade to a much bigger CNC press, (Morgan Rushworth) which is an awesome bit of kit. Ring rolling was sweaty work on a hot day. Hopefully post an update soon on the big boat, but not much to say this year sadly. We're only down in Aberystwyth and actually met on Anglesey! So a trip to the Menai Strait will definitely be on the cards. Still visit friends up there regularly. Might even make a trip up there with the little boat for some fishing/spearfishing this summer.

Is there any plans for seeing you completing the hull etc and will you be returning to your channel on KZread?. I built the same boat. One thing I actually ended up doing is filling in the transom notch. The transom height if I recall was 17" or so as designed and it was an odd height kind of in between for long shaft vs short shaft. Filling in the notch made it work really well with my 20" shaft motor. The boats still sensitive to forward weighting, but it seems to perform better now.

  • @SailingHunkofJunk

    @SailingHunkofJunk

    2 жыл бұрын

    We found the transom is just maybe a little high, but we've only been out a couple of times so am playing with the trim of the outboard before I make any adjustments. (More sea trials needed!) That being said i like the idea of a taller transom for seaworthiness.

  • @unknownuser8885

    @unknownuser8885

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@SailingHunkofJunk We found before we filled in the transom, there was a pretty high chance of water coming over the stern as we ran around. It was exacerbated when it was one person driving alone. In those times we are now stacking a sand bag on the front seats.

    I’m going to take the option of adding a splash-well before boating season kicks off this year, I’ve had a few waves come over the notch and didn’t like it much.

  • @unknownuser8885

    @unknownuser8885

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jimdavey871 Yeah, i think its a good add. It worked out really close, but I just stacked 3 lengths of 1.5" square tube on top of the existing transom cut out, then ran some doubler plates on the front and back, and then filled in the gap areas with 1/8" plate. The extra height helped a lot, but does require a long shaft. In retrospect, I'd have not added the notch ever wouldn't have had to do the filler pieces i did.

  • @SailingHunkofJunk

    @SailingHunkofJunk

    7 ай бұрын

    Hi, only just seen your comment, I cut a taper on the strakes first, and then spent a while measuring and marking the location. I did the outer two first. I used short sections of 2" alu pipe tacked to the hull plates and a strong hand tools half clamp to "lift" any low spots up to meet the strakes. I added in a manual bilge pump after the sea trials, and am currently in the process of lowering the transom notch to lower the engine mounting height as well. Aside from that I've added in a little bracket for rod holders and am going to put hand rails and cleats on the boat. Oh and a mount for a seat, and am thinking of turning the middle seat into some watertight storage. Hopefully we'll make a vid about it all at some point soon.
