Waves LV1 with X32

Музыка

In this video, I review the hybrid system I use to run sound for the tribute band The McCartney Project. I review the physical integration as well as the mixing choices I've made, including my use of the Abbey Road series of plugins.
(NOTE: I have relocated this video from another KZread channel, where it received 7,900 views. Thank you for the support and I look forward to your comments.)

Once I’m able to get a similar setup, would you be willing to assist me in setting this up (especially with the monitoring portion)? Thanks in advance!

    Very informative video with really nice details. To me I still feel that the LV1 is a complete puzzle which you have to solve piece by piece. In another video you went with another setup that's completely lv1 with no x32. Which setup is your go to? What is the complete hardware setup for the setup in this video when it comes to lv1 related hardware? I'm currently working on a project to setup a system at low budget which requires 2 or 3 mics max with the most pristine sound quality. This is why I don't feel like spending 6k or higher is the right option. Also I wonder do you believe going with mixer card and lv1 is reliable enough for live setups?

    Thank you! The other video is my main rig, but I work with hybrid rigs like this occasionally. As long as the artist is comfortable with you dropping a card into their X32 this is a great option because 1) They know that I can't accidentally mess up their ear mixes, and 2) I still get to use the console that I'm more comfortable with. Reliability has never been an issue. The only thing to remember about that card is that it HAS to be the Master Clock for the system. If it's not you'll get clicks. For your setup there are a few options. Waves just released the Proton Duo, which is computer, server, and switch all in one. They also have the Digigrid D cube (2 pres/2 headphones) and M (1pre 1 headphone). You may want to look at using the Soundgrid Studio app for your application. It's FREE, and is very similar to the LV1. There are some workarounds of course, but with only 3 inputs it could work well. (I have used it myself for small gigs). The downside is that prices on Soundgrid stuff have almost doubled since Covid, and they can still be hard to get. If you're patient get in the habit of checking eBay and Reverb regularly. Stuff shows up there sometimes. Also join the Waves Classified group on Facebook - there's always stuff there! I hope this helps!

    Great video, I have set up a similar system although I’ve run into and issue I can’t get my head around. My set up for live shows has always been DL32 and m32c onstage and m32r at foh. I’ve always run the dl32 port a into the m32c as that is the monitor console and needs use of the dl32 outputs and the foh console into port b on the dl32 acting as the slave. I have been using multirack out front along with a sever one but the limitations were getting to me so I purchased the lv1 system. My system now being: DL32 port a to m32c (sync set to internal) Dl32 port b to m32r (sync set to port a) M32r DN32-WSG card into sound grid network LV1 outputs send to channels on my FOH console which I essentially use as just an I/O for sends to the PA. However when I connected it all up and had a band playing I got lots of pops and clicks when running audio through LV1. My assumption is that because my FOH console is using the clock from the M32c onstage as it’s master the LV1 is getting confused??? Have you got any solutions for this? Thanks in advance

    Very similar to my experience! As you probably know, the LV1 is really picky about its clock. Do you have a switch between the waves card and FOH? That has made a difference for me. That card doesn’t like homeruns. I carry an extra GS108 just in case my setup misbehaves.

    @@vdubsvideos4619 thanks for the speedy response. Yes I’m currently using a netgear switch to network my server, DN32-WSG card and Mac mini together. Currently out on tour as a support act so don’t have loads of soundcheck time but I think I’m going to try connecting my FOH console out of the back of the monitor console instead of the stagebox so I can set it as the master clock tomorrow. Hopefully that fixes it.

    Yes, I have the outputs routed to both the Digigrid interface at FOH and the X32s on stage. In some venues I can patch into the house system on stage and in others I can patch in back at FOH. This allows me to accommodate either at a moments notice.

    hi i have a question. 1 the gains you make them from the X32 ... you put the mixer remotely you make the gain. 2 does the mixer sound better with Waves in your opinion?

  • @vdubsvideos4619

    @vdubsvideos4619

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sorry for missing this for so long... but to answer your questions: 1-Yes, gain still has to be controlled via the X32, either in an app or physically. I tend to set gain conservatively and then use a digital trim to fine tune. The bonus of this process is that when I have a separate monitor engineer I'm not chaining levels on him/her as I mix. 2-Yes, the LV1 improves the sound, even without any plugins. That's a pretty common opinion in the LV1 community as well. Of course the plugins themselves contribute too. Even the stock EMO plugins are better then the X32 compressors and EQs in my opinion. Yes, but only at the expense of other channels. The issue is that the card slot can only access 32 channels in or out, and the X32 actually has 38 total inputs. In the routing page you can send the AUX inputs and outputs instead of mic channels.

  • @vdubsvideos4619

    @vdubsvideos4619

    3 жыл бұрын

    You could, but we chose to use two X32Rs for a few reasons: 1. Redundancy: If one died, we have another. 2. Two card slots: One X32 has my Waves card so I can connect, while the 2nd X32 is used to make a multitrack recording of every gig. 3. More I/O: The DL16 (or S16) only has 16 mic inputs and 8 outs. The X32s also have AUX in and out, giving us 6 more of each on 1/4inch connections. 4. On smaller gig we just use the rack and two iPads: I control the top X32 for the main PA with an iPad while the manager runs monitors on another iPad. Theis prevents any possibility of us stepping on each other's toes, and allows him to make a separate mix for the recording.

    A few reasons: First off, the band already owned the X32Rs, which they also used for rehearsals and gigs with other sound guys when I wasn’t available. Meanwhile, I wanted to stay in the LV1, and there are a lot of bands with X32s, so I just carried a WSG card. The majority of the bands I worked with regularly trusted me enough to let me swap the card.
