    Mix sounded great, lighting and cameras looking SHARP My only nit pick would be that snare sound - to my ear it's tuned quite a bit lower than where it wants to be. With some slightly tighter wires on and tuning it up even just a half crank on the top you'd get a much nicer, more smacky sound out of it

    Thanks for the overview. Waves sells the CA3000-MX, which is essentially the LV1 used in conjunction with Dante Virtual Soundcard running on the same PC as the mixer. Since you have extensively used Dante, I'm wondering if you could create a few Dante sources to see how well the integration works. Changes in latency? Obviously, you lose the Dante stagebox pre-amp control from within LV1.

    We used Waves LV1 for a long time, loved the modular board and the in-board effects that can be added, but the problem we ran into is every once in a while (once every 4-6 weeks during service) our board would cut out for 20-30 seconds (strange lag spikes in the processing of the digital board). It forced our hand back to a physical board because we couldn’t keep dealing with the audio cutting out.

    @@AnthonyBalogun Most of the higher end mixing consoles use Windows as the control surface (Avid, Digico, SSL). This is nothing special. In addition many consoles are paired with superrack which is a very similar piece of software. I use the Lv1 platform now for 1,5 years and had issues in the beginning with dropouts but it all came back to wrong components like patch cables, switches and connectors. If you choose the right components and create a solid network this platform is running really great! And the sound is just on another level.

    @@aenbeats You need the waves X-WSG/WSG card installed and a soundgrid server then the X32 is seen as a IO box in LV1/superrack. One is a real mixer, and one is basically like mixing in a DAW live. Both are going to run you around $12,000 for everything thats needed. If you are really into waves plug-ins, and you cant mix without them, the LV1 might be your best bet. If you want waves with the avantis, you have to invest in more gear. I would take the avantis over the LV1 IMO. I think it makes you a better audio engineer if you don't rely on every waves plugin to do something that can be achieved with onboard gear. Good luck!

    Actually the operating system running under the hood of the Waves servers is Ubuntu Linux and it is Open Source except for the proprietary waves software. So you could build a replacment server by cloning the drive in the server and moving the OS to another machine with Timeshift on Linux (its like Timemachine on MacOS). These are all Intel based machines so if you have an i3, i5, or i7 server you can upgrade the CPU to get more power out of them as well. One of my bandmates has another band that uses the Waves soundgrid system as a Casino house band and we have done several upgrades to their servers. The only reason I haven't went with Soundgrid is because of the cost of i/o and the lack of anything being in stock. Sure you could use USB audio interfaces but Waves really wants you to buy their i/o boxes or a Digico mixer which both start at about $10,000 and depending on how many inputs and outputs you need a full system could cost upwards of $30,000 for a 24 in 16 out system. But I love the system and it works flawlessly. But the same basic concept can be achieved with a New Mac with either Apple's Mainstage $30 or Loudlab's Sounddesk which is $29.99 and a Thunderbolt interface if you only need say 24 mic preamps. Plus you aren't stuck with just waves soundgrid plugins but you can use other brands that also have zero latency plugins like Plugins Alliance's BX-console series or Toneboosters or any of the stock plugins in Mainstage (which are the same as Logic Plugins) or SSL's Channel Strip 2. Bus compressor 2 and many other SSL plugins and many other brands. I can achieve with a Thunderbolt audio interface and 2 ADAT boxes 24x24 ins and outs at 48K or 16x16 i/o at 96K a latency shorter than the Presonus Studiolive console's internal latency which is about 7 to 9 milliseconds depending on your channel count, on the interface I hit around 2.6 to 3 milliseconds of latency with no dropouts using Mainstage and the band members can control their monitor mix with Logic Control on their iPhone or iPads. But the Waves system is rock solid and a good investment so don't take this as me hating on it. I'm not. I was just offering different options to people who might not have the budget for the Waves soudngrid system but would like more control than a reular digital mixer offers.

    Sorry if this question has been asked already! BUT, I’ve used plugins live before (not with this solution) and I’ve come across a few issues. 1) the problem we’ve had is latency with the drums and vocal processing. To negate this, we had to have a separate console for IEMs, or split the latent channels to separate channels with less processing. Could I get away with selling my SQ6 and GX4816 and this handle both FOH and monitors? (We cannot afford a separate IEM solution unfortunately, so this is important) 2) We use Dante with 7 channels from our keys MacBook. Would we have to abandon Dante if we transitioned to soundgrid? (Waves to Dante bridge isn’t an option - would push the cost over budget) 3) We love mixing remotely from our iPads. Is there a solid wireless solution for doing this? Cheers!

    (hi. Dylan from Grace) - Not a stupid question at all! In fact, we used to do it this way. The problem is/was we do not currently have a dedicated room for somebody to create an accurate mix, AND you have to have a very well trained and passionate volunteer to make a DAW mix sound REALLY good. Sure, you can set it, forget it, and it would sound "decent". We just found that sending this FOH mix ended up sounding better than when we'd "set it and forget it" from logic.

    I've been wondering about going with a DAW instead of buying the SQ5. The cheapest setup on the waves website is around $4400, the SQ5 is $4000. It seems like a good deal for only $400 more to go fully digital. But I hear these softwares can glitch. I wasn't super clear on how to get the inputs and outputs to and from the computer, and SO glad you mentioned the stagegrid 4000. There is a stage grid 1000 which is plenty of me, but it's $4,000. For that price, you can buy an SQ5. That seems way too expensive for 8 preamps and a DAC. If there was a cheaper way to get mics into the computer, I could see DAWs as one day being cheaper than a console. Maybe Behringer can make one! Technically, their wing, is one, but I don't have space for that. It's a small desk with a small (old) Mackie on it, so a DAW makes a lot of sense if they have cost and reliability parity with consoles.

  • @graceplacenashville

    @graceplacenashville

    This rig is going to cost you 12k to get it all working properly. and the SQ5 is fully digital, so not sure what you mean there? DAW's are cheaper than consoles. Technically, if had an interface with enough outputs, you could run your FOH through protools, but there's a reason people don't do it. Normal computers are faulty. Servers are more stable. I would just get a digital console. The Wing definitely over the sq series. It blows them away

    Been using an LV1 on and off for 5 years now. it's a lot better now than it was back in the day but it's still no where near as reliable as even an x32. We have the most recent server and system set up in our broadcast space and still have issues almost every week with it crashing. Our second campus has massive latency issues with almost no plugins running it still can't handle 16 inputs correctly every week. all in all not impressed with the system as expensive as it is it's not very good.

    So is Waves just a more expensive and robust version of Dante?

    How is the delay on this system. Does it process like the Waves Auto tune Live without delay/

    The overall latency is determined by the amount of plugin processing, and like waves Live Tune most plugins are very low latency, with some exceptions. There are a couple settings on how to align the console (by groups/busses or entire console.) If entire console is selected then all channels will be delayed to match the latency of the longest path. I go pretty crazy with plugins and its plenty usable in FOH/broadcast applications. I can't speak to in ears though. I think my overall latency is usually less than 2 ms

    PC is the platform not the OS. Even the server is a PC but it's ruining Linux. It's Mac vs Windows not Mac vs PC.
