Waves eMotion LV1 Mixing System | Worship Ministry Setup

The Worship Ministry Toolkit: www.churchfront.co/worship-mi...
In this video, Adam shows us his digital mixer setup for his worship ministry with the Waves LV1 Digital Mixing Computer and Software. This board is extremely versatile and customizable, it features high-powered plugins, utilizes audio networking, and it has the ability to playback audio from a DAW for an instant virtual soundcheck.
This board is so, so cool, and Adam has created a pretty robust audio system using this mixer for his worship ministry. Let us know what YOU think about it in the comments.
Oh, and be sure to let Adam know how funny his Jimmy John's joke is, I could barely hold it together while we were filming.

    I'm using Dell P2418HT 24" screens. I currently use an X32 rack for IEMs, but it sounds like Waves is coming out with an iPhone/Android app to control aux mixes soon (AKA maybe before 2020). I just send a FOH board mix + ambient mics + an sm57 at FOH (time-delayed) for our broadcast mix. Thanks!

    I love this topic. Looking into upgrading a system that already has a networked building. I feel like this would be the best option to be future friendly for expansion. From my understanding would be simple to set up a second console in another room for mixing livestream. Do you know if you’d need a second server/cpu to run a second console?

  • @adam_churchfront

    @adam_churchfront

    I believe you would, but depending on how much processing power you need, channels you use, and how far broadcast mix is from main board) you may be able to get away with double-patching the channels and running it all on one extreme server and powerful CPU - though a secondary one would be the safer route in my opinion. Definitely get in touch with a Waves rep or ask the Waves LV1 Mixer facebook group - really helpful resources.

In other words: instead of saying: “Computer to run waves software” can it be “computer(with recommended OS and specs)” maybe even the computer you are using. How about recommended Touch Screen displays. Dante input box recommendations. Right now it’s fairly vague for us smaller churches. Thanks for the help!

    Thank you for the nice tour into your setup. For sure this is a system, which is stare of the art and very comfortable to use. It seems very high-tech and flexible. The infrastructure and network connectivity is awesome, like in the dante universe. The workflow with the plugins is very intuitive in this waves system. But there are some key elements, which I don't like at all. Having no physical knobs, buttons or faders is an absolute no go for me. I like to feel what I'm doing and not staring at the screens all the time. The visual focus should be at the stage, not at the displays. For me it's about feeling the music and the changes I have to do, not searching for the right position on a touch screen. In most digital mixing consoles the flexible and customisable fader assignment is also given, like demonstrated here. If I think about Yamaha QL Series or the Allen&Heath SQ Series, I whould prefer a "real" desk 100%.

    These work great with a Behringer x-touch for physical knobs and faders - we've found that we don't miss the physical faders or knobs though. Also, with plug-ins like Bass Rider, Vocal Rider, multi-band compression, etc it's not necessary to keep fingers on faders or knobs the whole time.

    It is essentially a S.A.C. ( Software Audio Console ) system which is the name of the software that was created in the early 2000's and still available today. They sold a turnkey system not unlike this one and now just focus on the software only. The major difference here is that Waves offers proprietary hardware that makes interfacing and running the software more robust and powerful. The actual S.A.C software costs $500 for the 32 bit system and can run any VST, or DirectX plug-ins and can utilize Dante or Madi system for channel inputs and outputs. The Waves system, in other words, is not breaking new ground. Where it is a winner is likely the ease of system setup and reliability since the software and servers are dedicated proprietary machines.

    I built a SAC system years ago for my part-time, small soundco. Ran ProMix 01 & BCF2000 for FOH & side stage control surfaces. SAC was a great sounding rig even with my aging PCI based MOTU boxes. It was very versatile for it's time. But...it wasn't the most stable system. If one connection dropped, the whole system would lock up and need a restart at the main console. Running FOH with Wifi was very risky because of that issue. The guy whole coded the program was/is stubborn or completely out of touch with what was happening in the industry. He refused to upgrade or add any elements that customers were asking for. I just noticed he hasn't even updated the website in years! I abandoned that SAC rig after a few years and bought into the Behringer world with an X-32 and an XR18. If I were still out mixing FOH, I sure would have my eyes on the new Behringer Wing.

    Thank you for showing some details on the system. In my church we're currently researching the next step after the X32 and of course all options are open. We do not own a venue though and channel capacity and flexibility are very important plus we don't want to upgrade every year but keep the system and expand it basically forever for multiple locations, midweek events in different locations.. through the last years we've been in more than 70 different venues. I don't really understand why you think the virtual soundcheck is the best feature, as even the X32 has the same feature just hidden in the routing menu (so you can't accidentaly push it) Questions: - Do you think the system is realistically mobile? I'm concerned about the handyness and durability. And reliability is so important! - What do you think about stuttering faders? I've been mixing on Ipads before and I didn't like these jumps of the faders as you move them that I also saw in this video. - It's not much cheaper than a desk, is it? Finances are a big factor in desk decisions. Else I'd pick Digico anytime. Stageboxes are a big part of the overall cost and the preamps dictate a lot of the quality.. so maybe in the end the system isn't even cheaper? - What are you using the stream deck for? Love that thing! Our Video operator is using it and I was thinking of getting it for triggereing playlists etc. in Qlab

  • @adam_churchfront

    @adam_churchfront

    4 жыл бұрын

    - I believe it's really mobile. A lot of touring engineers use this *because* it's so light and small. A solid touring case would help with that though. - I'm not sure the faders actually stutter, at what point in the video did you see that? - it's about the same price as an SD9, but more channels and plug-in capabilities. - I'm using the stream deck for controlling the recording/playback/spotify computer, it's not currently connected to the LV1

Oh, other than plugins, I guess. But really, what is the benefit you get for that much more money? I've struggled with this for a long time, working in a church with a very small tech budget. How do you justify to your congregation spending this amount of money on a mixer? I'm honestly not asking this to be a troll. This is something I've always wondered about.

    I think that Biblically, God's people were called to get the best of everything they could for God, and not to skimp on anything. For someone who can tell the difference with and without plugins, that extra bit of excellence in worship is in itself worship. When we're trying to bring our absolute best to God, every detail does matter. Excellent question though! Something I've dealt with a lot in my own ministry!

    @@Tovin I agree to get the best you can for God, but there is a point of diminishing returns. I have worked in small and large churches and systems. Some churches on a budget may have a system necessary for a larger church and that's great for future growth. But tech changes so fast that getting the best you can afford is not always best practice especially if the sound is marginally better. It's kind of like computers or a cellphone. You may get 5G phones but it's not really a provided service. So in most places, you can't access it. But if you wait til service or the resulting performance is the dramatic difference, you'll get the phone or church system that's still advanced tech and that your church services can benefit from. Another way to look at it is, there are a lot of luxury cars with the same feature set but at different price points. You don't have to be cheap but you can Pray for guidance and choose wisely. Excellence can also be found in your decision-making process.

    I like to think of it this way: there's not a system on the market that sounds better than this system. You get could 64 channels of IO at 96K for less than $10K. With a system that sounds this good, you'd spend far more. Here's the key though: the mixer is software based, so you never have to worry about replacing the "board" when it stops working. Just reinstall the software, or purchase one of the peripherals that may fail (ie, switch, host computer, cable, server).

    So you're using an X32 as the interface with Soundgrid cards? Gain adjustments have to happen on the X32?

    Just remember, plugins add latency, which can throw off a PA that is time-aligned. Milliseconds matter in more than a Left/Right setup.

    False. The Latency inducted by plugins is non-dependant of frequency. Meaning that if the plugins add 2ms of delay, the entire audio feed will be delayed, and will not impact the PA alignment. And by the way, the latency inducted in LV1 is smaller than most of digital mixers

    abMusic76 Got the honor of tuning a Meyer system with Bob McCarthy and we noticed that if you have any plugin inserted on a send, even without it on, that it will have latency from the input to the output.

    All that investment and plug-ins can't get round the lead vocalist being out of tune, sadly...

    Alec Spence Their should be a plug-in for that. I’ve seen it on the same console

    You're half-right. we use Waves tune live, but it won't help people more than +/-50 cents out of tune. But more importantly, I do auditions and provide resources to improve on vocal skills if people aren't there yet. search our channel for the live pitch correction video.

    They're probably in the wrong ministry if they can't sing in pitch.
