Water Heater Anode Rod Removal

They consist of magnesium and are designed to be the first thing to corrode, sacrificially protecting the other metal inside a water heater tank, thereby extending the tank's life.
Before doing anything to your water heater, turn off water and power and drain down the tank as needed. Do not leap into a job like this lightly.
These rods are not exactly easy to replace. Most people do not. Some tanks have two rods to extend the warranty.
My impact wrench was unsuccessful in getting the rod loose. What ended up working for me was a long breaker bar and a 2x4 between the hot and cold pipes to keep the tank from spinning.

Although this video is over 2 years old I found it interesting how you used the 2x4 to stop the tank from turning and since you weren't going to actually repair the water heater you didn't have to concern yourself with damaging the hot and cold connections. At the :50 mark you said you thought about cutting the tank open just to be curious. I wish you had because I was curious also to see what kind of shape the heating elements were in. Nothing beats taking something apart to see what makes it tick.
