Plumbing Drum Trap

a cast iron drum trap. It finally rusted through and started leaking. Some are made of lead. They kept a good water seal which prevents sewer gasses from entering house. However, they clog up and are hard to clean out.

the way you installed the replacement was incorrect, you have the p trap backwards and the pipe after the p trap is going uphill. if you are an inspector it makes me wonder what bad plumbing you passed.

Nice video. Approx year of construction??? I know drum traps have not been installed in several decades, they were very prone to clogging. But typically they are found in very old homes, the ones I've seen were used with claw foot tubs until the 30s or 40s, sometimes the bathroom sink also drained into it. A clue that you have a drum trap, would be if the tub and sink are next to each other, and the toilet at the end. You might find a clean out plug on the bathroom floor, next to the tub. Sometimes the were installed with the plug sideways or facing the bottom.

Thanks for this! My setup is very similar. I also have a tub with an og drum trap. The exit pipe on the drum is exactly the same height as the tub drain though. Lowering that waste line is out of the question. Does this mean I'm stuck with the drum trap? I'm not able to install a p-trap that then raises to meet the existing waste pipe, correct?

Were those drum traps used in homes in the 1960`s?

I just bought a building with a drum trap in it. I had to call a plumber to come and resolve this issue.

I’ve had luck blowing them out with an air compressor, I also think they installed them upside down in my house

That’s a running trap you installed. It will prob work but not legal anywhere I know by ipc or upc.
