Watch a test drive of a retired M113 armoured personnel carrier

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

An M113 armoured personnel carrier looks intimating, but with a three-speed automatic transmission and simple lever steering it's surprisingly easy to come to grips with. Patrick Dell takes one of the 60's-era war machines for a test drive at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa

I drove one of those in the early 70's in Germany. I was the TAMMS Clerk assigned to a Gamma Goat for field . Since the Gamma Goat was down more than up, I was assigned this , I liked the trade.

drove one in West Germany in the 70's. It is a battlefield taxi, better to ride than walk.

One thing about using this as your daily commute vehicle.....you won't have to worry about someone tailgating you or someone with a case of road rage.

Old, bald fat man or having your arms and legs blown off like you would in a Humvee

Old, bald fat man who is the road test them on the tank Trail before releasing them to crew and we would run over trees with them for the hell of it. You can't do that with a Humvee. Why the f*** did they Park them? Cheney said you don't go to war with the Army you want to go to war with the Army you have well we parked the Army we had....

The US military has hundreds of thousands of them parked I used to work on the M 901 An M113 with a hole cut out and a tow missile launcher Dropped In. Either way it beats the hell out of facing IEDs with a Humvee, nothing but a wide wheel base 22 gauge sheet metal Jeep. Cheney said you don't go to war with the Army you want, your go to war with the Army you have.. We didn't even do that! We parked the Army we had....

If you realy want to be exact, In real it's a M901 Tow Launcher. It's all built on a M113 chassis, another point is that's a "A2" model. I also be curious to see the data plate for the date of manufacturing as the "TOW" option and the "A2" upgrade Including the 2 external fuels cell, improved torsion bars and cooling systems came a lot later!

No that is american designation ours is and M113-A2 TUA or Tow under armour. and the amphibious ability was banned with the A2 Model too heavy to do it

lucperreault I was a mechanic on the M901it had a double tow launcher and that is not the same launcher it is a tow missile but it's not the M 901 either way it stands a better chance to gets an IED than a God damn Humvee

Good for camping and hunting, beat walking. Remove the govenor and it'd fly. Floats like a rock. You had to go way up stream during a river crossing to get close to the spot you wanted to exit. Rock the throttle and you'd swamp it or sink. Fun to play with unless you were in back.

Роман Громов When the ramp drops down they go in and sit down. better than a Humvee 22 gauge sheet metal on a Humvee! We could have saved all the amputations, especially if we fortified them with 1 inch steel plate on two sides in the bottom....

Роман Громов The ramp drops down and they go inside and sit down. Just like they do on a Humvee except that's 22 gauge sheet metal and everybody loses arms and legs. That could have and would have been prevented if they just used them they were parked and still are. It could have been fortified with steel plate on the sides and bottom also either way it would have beat using a Humvee....

Combat loaded the seats are strapped up and not used, this creates more space. It's only been like 40 years since I drove one, so I don't remember exactly how much of what was loaded in and on.But combat loaded the driver has the most room. Munitions were packed in crates and stacked inside about halfway up,then the squad enters. This is a combat vehicle not a custom van and were were little more than teen-agers then, so very flexible.

Driver, TC and 11 riflemen. We had a load plan to follow but we rarely did. We used them as our Cav Scout Vehicle or ACAV role. The thing could be configured as a mort, ambulance, mech Infantry, flame thrower, engineer, medic, motors, TOW and ITV track. It was light, fun to drive but wouldn't stop anything. Good for hunting and camping. It was a pig in water, leaked and more then 1 went down. It beat walking, was much easier to hide then the Bradley which is just a larger taxi.

So just a question... an ordinary Canadian citizen can't own something like this right? unless they have permission and do all kinds of background checks?

All of the amputations could have been prevented using these instead of a Humvee, they still exis,t they are just parked, they could have even been fortified with a half inch steel plate because they are aluminum!

Not mine strike resistant you would have far more casualties. The armor does a reasonable job of protecting the occupants from Shrapnel not so on direct hits from a 762 Machine gun or Anti tank weapons like the RPG 7 or M 72
