Back in 1971 I took my Scout training on one of those M-114's it had a 20 mm cannon main gun on the cupola. I've never seen one throw a track and I always thought they were fun to drive because they were fast. It was also amphibians. It had water steer gear and you had to remember after coming out of the water to switch it back into road steer. A lot of new recruits would forget to do this and when they would try to round a curve the steering was so sensitive in that mode it would just start spinning in circles. lol

So one would only imagine this thing covered with camo nets moving forward of a column with assorted weapons probably some painted in camouflage paint sceams looking for enemies in armored mechanized formations , The - M-114 was also amphibious like the M-113 APC armored personnel carrier , very kool 😎

April 23, 2018----Thanks for the video as this is the first running one of these I've ever seen. There was one of these stationed out front of the Alaskan Army national guard building not far from the Anchorage airport. This was when I was stationed at Elmendorf 77-79.

Incredible. An M-114 that actually moves under it's own power and doesn't have to be towed by an M-113 or a VTR. LOL

1972 - 1974, Recon Platoon, CSC 3/35 Armored Battalion, Bamberg. We had 9 M114 A1E1 ( 2 4 track sections plus one for the Lt, the platoon sgt had a M113) with the 20 mm. Spent a lot of time in them in the motor pool looking busy. We'd pull the one or two dead ones with us to Graf where we'd get enough priority to get them fixed.

Light and fast as all getout when they ran. They swam okay when the M2 50 cal was mounted (I swam them). With the 20 mm mounted they were lopsided to the right side and there was only one exact position for the barrel over the driver’s head that it wouldn’t sink them. Kind of scary.

Had a M-113 in the 1970’s, in Germany. They were phasing out the M-114. Not to many kind words for it. Still an interesting vehicle.

From what I hear around when they were new they had less problems. By the time of the 70's they were showing their age and maintenance were not up to the standards, and there was a lack of new replacement parts. Lots of guys would tell me stories how they would cannibalize 2 or 3 vehicles to keep one barley running

Yes, I’m the 1970’s they were being phased out, saw one that had burned down in Graf. Not sure when it happened but just tracks, engine and debris. Looks like a hot to drive around, with out any real need to have one. Didn’t they only have gas engines? My M-113 was a maintenance beast but I would take it over a 114 anyway.

We had one of these in B 1/11 Infantry (4ID, Mech) in 1973 at Ft Carson. Couldn't keep it running. When we finally got it stable, we parked it and it never left the motor pool. Cool little vehicle but under-powered (as mentioned below). Our Mii3A1s were much, much better.

Yeah from the vets I spoke with towards the 70's these things were become hard to keep running. I guess the engines were all worn and the entire fleet needed to have a rebuild

@@pasqualelombardi2777 - The biggest issue was their engines. Too small (if I remember, just a 289) and overworked. Constantly failing due to the strain. We resorted to running to the local, civilian auto-parts store for replacement parts.

Had them in back in 1972 at FT Carson, would race them in the motor pool. Never took them to the field..we used the m113 and the m125a1 motor track.m114 looks great on paper..

I was in the 7th Inf. Regiment of the 3rd. Inf. Division in Germany in 1974 and we had several of these vehicles. They were powered by a Ford 289 cu. in. V8.

Co. E 708th Mt. Bn. Fwd. Sppt. Not Ford powered in 1963-1966 in Germany. They were all Chevrolet 283 cu.in.

The M - 114 was underpowered by the mid 1960's Chevrolet 283 cubic inch V8. It was rated at about 190 anemic horsepower. Pitiful.

They were junk P.O.S. gutless 283 pushing 7 tons. Saw them broken more often than in a running condition. Laid out the rubber band track twice on the autobahn. Slow and cold in the winter. Would have been better used tuned into beer cans.

Track is sections bolted together, how fast were you going on the autobahn? Mine and all I have seen have the gas fired heater installed.

@@pasqualelombardi2777 Both times they were broken down and being towed by M113's, (Detroit diesel). Probably 40-45mph in convoy, laid the track right out on the highway. Our maintenance section took the tracks off one and loaded it into a 5-ton truck bed, just fit. They were always broken down. We could never get replacement igniters for the heaters. If you had an igniter, you never ever left it in the vehicle

Wanted to add that few of the pictures I see represent the M114 as I knew it. The biggest difference is that so few have the “surf” board mounted on the nose. I have seen two good pictures of restorations, one with an M2 and one with a 20 mm. I avoided any track with the 20 mm mounted. What a pain.

This M114 has a early aluminum surf board. That is why I stenciled "no step" on the board in 2 places. Viewers tend to want to climb onto or off the M114 from the front.

If I win the billion dollar lottery; forget about the fast car, and big mansion; a couple of tanks and other track vehicles and a large piece of land to play in will be ideal.

we did in '62... they didn't last long in country for a number of reasons and were pulled out in '64
