At the end of the day, he lives in Florida and it’s a constitutional carry state. We all have guns here. He was also in his home. As a cop, you can’t just shoot everyone you see with a gun.

Thank you I am afraid that police training today is geared in the wrong direction. I have watched training videos that are all about shoot first mentally. Then they are told everyone has a gun. I don't know but it seems that far too many people that go into policing have watched too many hours of 24 and it has effected their understanding of humanity.

Same department where a deputy shot at his cruiser with a handcuffed man inside because an acorn fell on the cruiser. These clowns are cowards.

I couldn't tell you how many videos I've seen on Facebook, of Florida police showing up to wrong house. I watched one where the house numbers were seen clear as day on the house, they were in middle of breaking in when luckily home owner started talking to them through the door cam. Then she left work, showed up to her house and was furious, said police tried to act like it's no issue, while also trying to make her a villain. They'll do anything besides hold themselves accountable. It's never their fault, always someone else's.

30 years retired as a chief, in Texas it is common for people to have guns in their home and I have on many occasions encountered people with guns when answering their door. No one was shot for having the gun with them.

Cops do this all the time in body cam footage. They are taught to say certain things during training that helps protect them in the case an event is reviewed or goes to court. These statements are drilled into them and I'm pretty sure it's subconscious utterances we're seeing in the videos.

As a fellow officer, he should be charged with negligent homicide, and barred from every holding a position in law enforcement. Where I work, we might see 20+ firearms a day. When I was temporarily posted at a bank, we had an incident where a guy opened up his bag on the counter to get his wallet out and a tec-9 fell out, he obviously grabbed it quickly, and no, I didn't shoot him. I think this officer was severely under-trained. The first thing he should have done if he truly thought there was danger would be to yell drop the gun drop the gun drop the gun while stepping off the x and using concealment as cover(repositioning). Then backup should have been called. Also, from the bodycam footage, its pretty obvious to me that this guy means no harm. Body language is the key. You can almost always tell someones intentions based off their body language. Watch the hands and the eyes.

In the video I don't see where he would get cover if he stepped off the "x". Fortson could have shoot the officer around the corner if the officer stepped off the X.

DON'T need to see article, I've seen the complete deputy footage. The airman could not see the officer. The kid was gunned down. The airman NEVER threatened the officer. The officer is responsible to do his job and make correct decisions.

Retired Deputy and Firearms instructor here. No way was this a Good Shoot. Part of the problem is us the LEO instructors. Over the years something changed. Officers see a gun and just start blasting away. Recruits hit the streets with a mindset that all armed citizens are a deadly threat to them. A few times in my career people open the door armed and its not unusual. Here in FL everybody has a gun good n bad. Training and experience are key factors in play here.

You appear to be ignoring the totality of circumstances. We aren't talking about someone who called requesting a report answering the door with a slung rifle or holstered pistol. This was a domestic violence call, and the the suspect opened the door with a drawn pistol. He had an empty holster on his belt, so he made a conscious decision to draw before answering the door in response to a call of "sheriff's department. If he believed there was a legitimate deputy at his door, there was no reason to draw the gun. If he believed it was a police impersonator outside, opening the door at all would be insanely stupid. Hostile intent toward the deputy is the only thing that would cause a rational person to take that combination of actions. It is certainly possible that people will act irrationally, but no competent training would instruct anyone to risk their lives on the assumption that the person confronting them was crazy or stupid and not a real threat.

The problem is that cops can get away with anything as long as they say they feared for their life. What about our lives? You know, the ones who they’re supposed to serve? Our lives should be more important.

A few years ago a similar situation. Happened in lake county Fl. The cops went to the wrong apartment in the middle of the night. They never identified. Them self and shot the guy grave yard dead. My friend in Volusia county. Was executed. For having a cellphone in his hand in his house. His ex girlfriend told police he sold pot. They never found any drugs. And they tried to say on the news his tip money for delivering pizza was drug money. Cases like this infuriate me.

Take aways from this: Don’t answer the door to cops. Don’t let cops into your home. Don’t trust your neighbors. Don’t let your personal or home life spill out into other peoples lives (don’t make mistakes and give others a reason to target you; ie call the cops on you) Realize that you have rights only in practice and ultimately to the government, police, and military (sadly to say) they are only theories and aren’t actually recognized.

Things are out of control and LE needs a stand down and regroup.

A lot of this whole mess has to do with some Karen sticking her nose where it didn't belong. Someone else told her, so she goes and sticks her nose in it with the cop; and what kind of hillbilly police department goes around working off 3rd. hand information as if it is first hand information? Remember listening to a high ranking member of a LEO agency. Talking about the young recruits, having no experience in conflict resolution. And that was like 15-20 years ago. They grew up in these "No Bullying" times. So they have little to no experience talking their way into and out of an ass whooping. Now we are at a point where some think words are violence. But why would one want to answer the door with a gun in their hand rather than answer the door empty handed with the gun concealed or holstered. The latter IMO is usually the legal and SMART choice and the former is the legal and sometimes the dumb choice.

Idk, alot of people talking about how he had a gun in his hand, down by his side, IN HIS OWN HOME, while the officer had his gun out and aimed directly at Forston. In that image, it seems very clear to me who the one in the wrong is, and that's the first one to draw and aim their weapon at somebody. Cops need to be reminded that the badge doesn't give them permission to just go pointing their gun at anyone whenever they want

The resident drew his gun before opening the door. The deputy did not draw his firearm until after he saw a man with a drawn gun open the door.

Live in a city. Police have showed up on the wrong address twice at my house. Meant to go two houses down, where the couple argues and fights all the time. Scary mistake. Another time I called the police to return found Apple AirPods. Called them with the owners info and asked them to if I could give them to the police department to hold onto and contact the actual owner. Trying to do a good deed. They said yeah sure. But I didn’t have to come by, that they’d send an officer to come get them. Officer shows up…with no idea why he was there. Acts suspicious of course. Doesn’t even know what AirPods are.. Like he was just told to go to x address, and that was it. No further details. Dude came ready for problems, and I was simply giving them AirPods and the owners contact info per Apple.. Cops are mostly low IQ goons, ready to be “heroes”. Defund most of them. Too many are dangers to our citizens..

The standard procedure is to give commands after a shooting. Generally speaking, people get confused about what happens in the correct order. Police training teaches the officers to do this. The police are not on your side.

Though to be fair, raising a gun and shooting at this distance can be done extremely quickly, the deputy may not have time to react in that situation. I'm not saying it's a justified shooting, it's just a very unfortunate situation as a whole. @@hawkstable8889 doesn't matter. The officer has *THE DUTY* to allow the person in question to surrender. He wasn't called there for an active shooter scenario. Also, that's the job. You sign up and put on that badge, you take the inherent risk you might die in the line of your duty. You're not allowed to just go pulling the trigger any time you want because you're a coward you can't think critically through situations.

@@chrishaugh1655 In an ideal world maybe. The truth is that the human brain doesn't work like this. It may be easy for you to say that when you're not in the situation, but I can guarantee that in a similar situation you would also prioritize your own life, that's just how self preservation works. Also he was called in for a domestic violence scenario, which is one of the most dangerous things for an officer to be called to since that can turn very nasty very quickly. If an officer turns up to a domestic violence situation and the first thing he sees is a person with a gun it's not exactly the wildest assumption that the person is up to no good. Even Donut Operator has pointed out the dangers of domestic violence situations many times in the past.

Action is faster than reaction, so that's not valid. Only MNQB I can think of is to have backed behind that stairwell pillar so he could give commands behind cover.

Prime example of why DEFUND makes sense. Too many Over Zealous police walking around pumped up on Starbucks and Adrenaline and DONT KNOW THE EFFING LAWS. But WE are expected to know every detail of EVERY ONE.

Forston answered the door on a domestic violence call with a drawn handgun. Of course he was a suspect.

Cop saw a gun and lost all his mental faculties and just went for the trigger. Such low mental fortitude.

So the lesson is never, ever, ever open the door. If you just sit there quietly they aren’t gonna hear any DV, won’t have enough PC for a warrant and walk away. As an added bonus they might realize they had the wrong door.

You gotta call them how you see them. Midwest Safety put up a video yesterday of cops going to a guy's house, and he started coming to the door with a gun. The officer saw it and told him to drop it, and he did... It was easy; it just took a second to think before shooting.

That is completely false. Had some guy collecting donations for his kids little league team knocked on the door, had an occupant open the door with a handgun drawn, and used deadly force in self defense, they would have a solid self defense claim.

What I would do is tell the LEO "Your being evasive and I will not open the door until I verify with 911 that the Sheriff's office does in fact have an officer dispatched to my address". When you've been able to verify it's legit, then you can disarm yourself and let the officer in. Also nothing stopping the officer advising the resident to do this, right?

Stop straddling the fence. Either as citizens we have the right to own ans carry guns at our homes or we dont. Stop talking to us about more training. Q citizen was killed at their home becase a specific officer was bad at their job. Hold them accountable or youre saying police can indiscriminately kill citizens. This guy did not just carry a gun. He had a holster on his hip. He chose to draw his gun before approaching the deputy. If you approach someone with a drawn handgun, whether that person is law enforcement or not, it is reasonable for them to assume you intend to unlawfully use deadly force against them and respond with deadly force in self-defense.

It's Florida police... they're as crooked as it gets.

It's important for law enforcement to prioritize de-escalation tactics, but in high-stakes situations, split-second decisions can be difficult.

Today's police think they're in a free fire zone.

This was a bad shoot in my opinion. The mere fact that a person has a gun on them does not justify a cop shooting them.

This deputy should be prosecuted - That department needs some serious re-training.

@@1retiredknight no one heard anything outside the door. The cop couldn't even hear anything on the body cam. The dude was literally home alone. If there was a domestic disturbance, then it was in a different apartment. The woman who gave the cop directions told him that she wasn't sure what apartment the sound was coming from. This is all shown on the bodycam footage. She was guessing an apartment.

In Phoenix, they did the same thing to a former coworker’s brother. Carbon copy situation by and large. Yes, it happened fast but you can see the guy putting his gun down as he yelled “whoa whoa” or “hold hold” (sounded very similar) but either way, it didn’t look like a threat. Nothing was done for the family and I don’t see anything likely being done here. What I’ve learned from these kinds of incidents is: 1) You don’t have an obligation to answer the door 2) Get a doorbell cam and talk on that and stay away from the door

That deputy is in deep sh!t! He's going to have to get use to the prison shower. I feel so bad for the airman's family.

The cowardly blue line is the domestic threat we were warned about. The cop also hid from view after banging on the door to set up an ambush.
