Was Masvidal the Real Victim?

Спорт

/ mixedmollywhoppery
Jorge Masvidal (born November 12, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Welterweight division for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history at five seconds, and won the informal UFC 'BMF' Championship belt. As of March 7, 2022, he is #7 in the UFC welterweight rankings.
On March 22, 2022, it was reported that Masvidal had allegedly assaulted UFC rival Colby Covington, whom he had been defeated by at UFC 272 a few weeks prior. It is alleged that as Covington was leaving a restaurant, Masvidal ran up on Covington and punched him twice, fracturing one of Covington's teeth and causing an abrasion on his wrist.
Colby Ray Covington (born February 22, 1988) is an American professional mixed martial artist who currently competes in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion. As of June 2021, he is #1 in the UFC welterweight rankings.

It's not that a tall, he's reached the pinnacle with 2 fights over usman, and he got there because of his character and the shit with Leon Ben etc, it's all down hill from here though because he doesn't have the wrestling or cardio to contend with the killers in usman and Covington, Covington is a piece of shit though, and I don't think there's a man out there who wouldn't of done what he did having his kids brought up to millions of people all the time, Colby is at the top of the division and would be regardless of the heel he plays at this point so when is enough enough, I absolutely feel for Jorge in this situation and Colby for all his trash talking has gone to the law, nobody likes a snitch and he had it coming regardless, whether it was Jorge Dustin or anyone else he has insulted he deserves everything he gets and should probably expect more than that in all fairness he's lucky it wasn't much worse for him, words have consequences.

Especially if you're so confident it's not true, why get so upset? If he's such a great father, is that really a good example for his kids? He's "worried about them seeing the things Colby said online" but not worried about his kids seeing their dad be arrested for assault because he can't control his emotions and jumped a guy? Regardless of who's side you're on, it was a cowardly and immature move to jump him the way he did.

It takes confidence and maturity to take the high road. The vast majority of people who are insulted in some way, don't resort to assault. Reputation & Power are everything and should definitely mean more than if the person next to you thinks you're a good person or not. So regardless, I'll likely never be in the majority on these kinds of issues and I'll especially never side with someone like Colby because everything he says is just a baseless propaganda act for himself.

@@BlitzKeeg @Keegan Duke "Words as you said so vaguely". Did you expect me to proceed with multiple paragraphs entailing the multiple things said by both parties? I think you understood what I was referring to. Regardless, when it boils down to it they're all just words. They're also words being used in conjunction with an entertainment industry to build a fight. Fueds build fights and trash talk us a fixture in combat sports and has been for decades. By your own words, you stated you gain much more respect for someone if they launch their own defamation campaign. Isn't that exactly what Colby did? Wasn't Jorge the one who started the defamation in the first place? Colby didn't say a single negative thing about Jorge, and Masvidal began a defamation campaign. Stating Colby was a "trash person" "slimy and didn't pay his coach" and several other defamatory statements. Colby said negative things about other ATT fighters and Masvidal felt obligated to side with the team and turn on Colby. Covington provided receipts that what Jorge was saying wasn't accurate. So by your own self professed stance, shouldn't you be supporting Colby? He was the initial one of the two who was defamed. Regardless of any of that or who started what. I stand by what I said. What Jorge did was cowardly and immature. Jorge has absolutely no control over his emotions and has insecurities that have shown themselves multiple times. The Leon Edwards situation is another example.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought child support was by force, why would you take that into consideration when looking at Jorge’s relationship with his kids or being a dad? By that logic he could just send the check to Maritsa and be allowed to call himself a father. Also every clip you showed of colby “talking about his kids” was him talking about masvidal, not the kids. You could say he brought up the kids, but not with bad motives towards them. I always appreciate your perspective, but I'm not sure I agree with the framing. Even if the second scenario is true (and it may very well be) I think it's perfectly reasonable to side with Colby after the assault. We can acknowledge that Colby crossed a line without justifying an ambush outside of the octagon. And I'll be honest, I think Masvidal was motivated more by embarrassment than the defense of his children. A protective father making a mistake in the heat of the moment, I could understand. But this was a premeditated ambush. Jorge had plenty of time to reconsider and he chose at every opportunity to continue. To me, this is an important distinction.

I typically don't comment on videos, but figured I'd share my take on this one. In my short time on this earth, and less time spent in the hurt business, I've gained three grains of wisdom relating to this situation; 1) believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear. 2) the truth lies somewhere in-between. & 3) forgiveness is more powerful than strength. I've accepted that whenever I see Colby on camera, I'm witnessing a persona. Slim Shady isn't Marshall Mathers, and Chaos is a WWE heel in the UFC. I love Colby as a fighter, and feel apathetic yet understanding about what he says behind a microphone. On the case of Jorge's role as a father, I don't believe a majority of what Colby has to say. However, when there is no enemy within, the enemy outside can do you no harm. If Jorge knew he was a good dad, and didn't have something deep down he felt guilty about, I can't imagine him allowing another man's words to penetrate his peace to this degree - even after giving it his best 25 minutes, followed by a televised apology to his children. Therefore, I have to believe that Colby isn't 100% honest about Jorge's shortcomings as a father, while conversely after all that has unraveled I can't believe Jorge doesn't feel guilty deep down about something he knows that us, the viewers, will never know regarding his children (IF the comments from Colby about Jorge's fatherhood really do hold weight and is the motivating factor behind sneaking Colby). In reference to your 'wtf do I do at this point' statement at 15:45 , when you cannot forgive, you admit defeat. Look at a man like Iron Mike Tyson share his insight on the power of forgiveness and the true loss that lies in the inability to forgive. Typically, what is right is far from easy, but yet remains simple. Take a second to imagine a beaten Jorge Masvidal at the post-fight press conference. Defeated, ashamed, embarrassed. When given his opportunity to speak, the words from his mouth, rather than resent and grudges aimed at his best friend turned bitter rival, are that he forgives Colby for committing so heavily to his role as the UFC's villain that Colby stooped so low as to bring another man's kids into the picture. All for the sake of selling pay-per-views. Jorge forgives Colby for what he's said, understands Colby, like himself, is trying to provide for those he loves, and that at the end of the day the hurt business is still a business. Jorge forgives, admits defeat, and moves on. Regardless of how it may sound or how it may look, the things we remember the fondest are the feelings we experienced. I can't imagine the tide wouldn't turn in Jorge's favor and Colby's reputation would be significantly tarnished. Colby's victory would go on to be used as a point of defeat by any future opponents throughout his career. We would all know who really won and who really lost. Now, not only has Colby taken the W inside the ring, but Jorge's actions afterwards have voluntarily relinquished his claim to street code honor. "The supreme art of war, is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Love the vid MMW, keep up the good work.

This would have also taught Jorge's kids a fantastic lesson, and shown him to be thinking first and foremost of them, completely shattering Colby's narrative of him being a bad dad. Not only that, but forgiveness in the face of adversity is pretty much the essence of the religion that Jorge was getting riled up Colby when was bashing it. Perhaps when you declare your religion to be something important to you, you should follow the tenets of it (which many Christians admittedly do not). Honestly, by giving into an emotional and violent response to this, he proved everything Colby had said to be true. It takes you facing up to your own ego to do something like that though, and Jorge is clearly incapable of that, because attacking someone from an ambush while backed up by goons is definitely a move solely backed up by ego, and an unwillingness to let anything go. People talk all the time about Jorge "living the life" or like he's some kind of "warrior", but a warrior doesn't give into emotion because doing so leave you open (like Aldo found out), he's not some kind of Ghetto Musashi, he's a cowardly criminal. There is also no honor on the "street", that's just some nonsense they spout to try and justify themselves. Attacking people from ambush where they can't find out, disguising themselves to do it, and being fully willing to target women and children. There is no "honorable code of the street", they are all thugs like Jorge, who has talked proudly about all the people he's sucker punched and ran away. People need to stop talking about this shit like it's in anyway acceptable, glorifying these people leads to nothing but more violence.

He never talked about his kids. He talked about Jorge not being there for his kids…. Which… is not the same thing. At all. Is he isn’t he. Don’t know. But at no point in this video did he say a bad thing about the kids, if anything he stuck up for them.

I don't know if we watched the same video, but the fact that he mentioned his kids so many times is a no go for me. Like in this video there is a good 1 minute section of Colby just saying the word kid, that's how many times he mentioned them. I'd understand if he said it once and he realized Jorge really wasn't fucking with that and never did it again, but it's the fact it was target of his consistently is the issue.

It's an odd social construct. When kids are growing up, if they get bullied, most in society tell them to "stand up for themselves" but as adults we tell people to eat it and "it's just words" - it's an odd twist to instil values into people then expect that not to follow them to adulthood. Especially when things like rap beefs where people can get killed are usually lauded as "real". We have really strange moral goal posts in modern times.

"Either it's all OK, or none of it is." - South Park, Cartoon Wars part 2 "Offense is taken, not given. No need to disarm the world. Just make yourself bullet proof. Sticks & stones people." - Ricky Gervias & stop getting offended on other peoples behalf (yes, that includes your friends & family). ^ That's becoming a cancer in our societies & cultures. Don't assume & treat your kin as if they're weaklings. I'm so glad my Dad thought of me as stronger than Jorge does his kids. My Dad taught me the score when I was 6 years old. Came home crying because an older kid called me names. My Dad gets angry at ME & says, "Who gives a shit, tell em to shove it up his ass & fuck off." He then immediately followed that up with, "But if I ever hear about someone hitting you, I better not hear that you didn't hit back." (& yes, he taught me the concept of picking your fights. I wasn't stupid, I'm not gonna try & fist fight a giant or take on 5 guys 1v5.) Being mean, crass, rude, inappropriate, a jerk or just dang ol' mean is not & should NEVER be illegal. SHOULDN'T is very, very different from CAN'T. If Jorge is indeed a good Dad then he can provide proof & use words like a civilized adult. If what Covington says holds no water then his falsities will be rendered null & void by truths, not fists. You don't defeat bad ideas, arguments, points, takes etc by beating the people making them (yeah, that's really gonna change minds). Even those that would otherwise be neutral on the issue will turn against you. That's not how debate works no matter how crass the debate may be. "Well I believed Covington at fist but after Jorge punched me & Covington in the mouth I guess Covington was lying.", "So far my score is 2-2. Point, counter-point, point, counter-point.". A real meeting of the mind! Prohibition never works. Only good ideas, arguments, points, takes etc defeat bad ones. Not force. By escalating & using his fists (illegally mind you) against words all he's doing is giving more credence to Covington. "I didn't believe Covington at fist but the way Jorge reacted now makes me think there may be some truth to what Covington said." - is a very reasonable response from an outside perspective. Even the most offensive of ideas have to be protected under freedom of speech. Not only for the sake of, "those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." but w/o being able to hear them at all people will always assume there's at least some truth to them. "Why else would they not allow us to even hear them? Unless the truth is the answer they don't like." Words for words. Fists for fists. Bullets for bullets. Equivalent exchange.

I couldn’t imagine getting so offended by supposed lies that you need to sneak up on a guy in a mob wearing a disguise to sucker punch him then run off. Especially after they already fought. Did Masvidal actually prove he’s a great dad by landing himself in jail (mug shot included) with a sizable payment to be given NOT towards his kids, but his enemy? These actions he took should tell us something about him no? 🤨 So ALL those statements made by Colby was prior to getting in a locked cage for nearly half an hour. Wasn’t the actual time to shut him up in said locked cage? 🙄 I don’t know wether he’s a sh*t father or not, but I know people who are very self absorbed and don’t actually care about their kids and that image isn’t what that person shows to others and when you expose it or bring it up they get very upset. From what I understand….Colby is on friendly terms with Masvidal’s ex wife (that in itself would trigger a guy in Masvidal I’m sure). We don’t know exactly what she told him and wether it’s true or not. I believe Masvidal didn’t want to fight Colby to begin with, but made the UFC jump through hoops to get him to even fight Colby. I’ve heard Colby ask to fight Masvidal more times than I’ve ever heard Masvidal even bring up a possible fight. Fans even started to question why Masvidal was so quiet about Colby (I didn’t just make that up….if you followed this saga you know it’s true). I think the people have spoken and Colby should not have gotten assaulted by this street thug. Period.

These two know each other very well and its obvious that the whole "I'm a Dad" is a big deal to Masvidal. At some point coming up as broke fighter Masvidal was NOT able to pay child support and be there for his older child. He was too broke to pay his child support and rarely saw his eldest. After all, she never saw him fight live until she was 11. That's what happens when you don't pay: you don't get to see your kid. He did feel like a bad father and probably still does over that. Covington amplified that to get at Masvidal. Really leaned into it and implied Masvidal is STILL a deadbeat, even to his other, younger, kids even though he knows that Masvidal is currently able to pay his child support and does so. Covington is as big a chunk of excrement as you think he is. Masvidal is still wrong to attack him like that, though.

  • @AveSicarius

    @AveSicarius

    2 жыл бұрын

I mean I'm not going to speak on his life without evidence, but Jorge doesn't seem like the kind of person who'd be a good dad at all, especially because rather than think of them, he thinks of himself. Now his kids might not see him for years. Why? Because he couldn't deal with words that might have an element truth to them? Look at the Cain situation, which is WAY more understandable. Cain still hurt his kids more than if he had done nothing at all, because now they might not see him for two decades. I get being upset about your kids potentially being hurt, but your first thought as a parent should always be of them, not yourself. If Jorge was really that upset by what Colby had said he should have made a public statement and talked about it, get his kids on screen and say "we love our father", and really just approached this from the perspective of someone I would think wasn't a deadbeat dad at all. It would also show his kids that sometimes you have to deal with people like this, people who are offensive and infuriating, and when that happens, you open the conversation and show how ridiculous that person is to the whole world. Now they think the answer is to be a "thug" and run around sucker punching people you don't like well dressed up like a ghetto ninja. This is exactly the kind of evidence that suggests Jorge is, in fact, a deadbeat dad, because he's more willing to do jail time then he is to simply sit down and talk to his kids. Also, I really don't think this wasn't about what Colby said, this is about Jorge feeling his bruised ego and deciding that he needed to "get even". Nothing Colby said was really that offensive (especially compared to some of the other shit he's said to people like Matt Hughes), and it's nothing that couldn't be ignored or dealt with in a legal manner (he could even have pursued a defamation suit against Colby). Colby could have said anything somewhat offensive, and Jorge would likely still have sucker punched him and used that for a justification instead of his kids. He had a chance to LEGALLY fight Colby and he let Colby get in his head and obviously didn't prepare for the fight anywhere near as much as he should have. That's on him. Clearly Jorge didn't want to face off with Colby and say "hey, why did you say this? We need to talk!" or, you know, if violence was going to be the answer tell him to sign up for a rematch. Instead he sucker punched him AND he was stupid enough to both let Colby know it was him and publicly incriminated himself. He wanted to hurt Colby without any consequences, not confront him like an adult, or a man, and then he wanted to let the world know that he had done this. This being said Colby Covington is an extremely simplistic character Colby is playing to drum up attention. He is ridiculous, and anybody who takes him seriously needs to rethink their observation skills. He's a budget Andy Kaufman with none of the subtlety or humour of the former, and while this tactic has been effective in keeping him in the UFC (and gaining him some degree of traction), I think he's fallen far too much into the character and needs to take a step back. This is what the UFC wants fighters to be, and it's what they are encouraging, which is pretty fucked.

To immediately chalk up the fact that his daughter didn't come to a live event until she was 11 to him not paying child support is absurd. 11 is very young to attend a live cage fight. Not every parent thinks that's appropriate for a child even when one of the parents is a participant.

I think the outcome of the fight plays a massive role into this situation as well. We've never seen Jorge look so defeated and Colby was continuously rubbing it in his face but do you really think Jorge would've done what he did if he had won? This is why I think that attack was more about his pride than about his kids, not that his kids don't have a role in this incident. The way I see it, Jorge let Colby get into his head which caused to lash out without thinking for a second that this could've ruined his life. I don't know anything about his family and I hope he's actually in his children's life but regardless if it's true or not, he let those comments get to his head because it was from the person he lost to. I know I'm kicking a dead horse with this one but Jorge had 25 minutes to shut him up and failed to do so and instead of using that loss to becoming a fighter, he cowardly punches Colby from behind. So no, he's NOT a victim, not even close.

The comments made by Colby were calling him a bum for paying child support and not being with them it wasn't directed towards the kids. On top of that Jorge said shit about Ben Askren's kids so he can't act all innocent about that shit.

That's a direct insult. Which is a dick move, but Jorge has no ground to stand on. And Jorge did everything he could to make it look like Colby was telling the truth.

First of all if it’s false that Jorge is a deadbeat dad then there is no issue. He should just laugh it off and go about his business. If people believe Colby that’s their problem. People will always harass you for whatever reason it’s the Internet, dude. If anything Jorge could have sued Colby for defamation but what is assaulting him and getting arrested going to accomplish? It only proves Colby right. What kind of example are you setting to your kids by getting arrested for battering someone?

Well now I have a different point of view, I used to think that Colby never directly insulted his kids, therefore Jorge is just a jerk who excuses crimes with lies. But now I see it as Colby was lying about Jorge being a bad father and instead of denying those claims he went up and assaulted Colby and excuses that act as being something to defend the honor of his kids, but he's defending his own ego. If he knows that he's a good father and that Colby is just lying then it shouldn't affect him that much, they're lies after all, he's gotta accept that he hates Colby and did it for that alone, no excuses about being an honorable cause

This video doesn't prove that Jorge isn't a deadbeat dad, or that Colby lied. Only that it's possible Jorge pays Child Support. Which was always certain, as the state of Florida would garnish the child support straight from his wages.
