when you fight for survival every day of you life, prize fighting is easy. it's a win win proposition, at least you get you know where the punches are coming from and you have an actual chance to win based on your own merits. i notice all these fighters from hyper-capitalist system countries focus on giving back, while the yanks (who get individualism pounded into their sense of being, while ironically also have socialist christian values ) glorifying grandiose "this was all me" sense of attitude. i know the state department has been pushing individualism for 100 years to curb creeping socialism, but promoting selfishness has to come back to bite you in the ass sooner or later as a country. starting wars every 5 years, then telling your populus to get behind these 18-20 year old kids can't keep your country together forever
What i took from this was that Charles' mother, father and the coach that offered him free training were the most important influences in his life that led him down the path he took. Seemed like his mother and father were such amazing people. They say you cant choose your family, but if you could, id imagine you would want parents of the same calibre and quality of Charles' mother and father.
I love how humble Charles is, a salt of the Earth character, his parents achieved in building a good person.

As someone who actually lives and works in The Bronx, NY, seeing that they call Charles' neighborhood "The Bronx" actually makes it feel like it is not as bad as the reality. A favela in Brazil must be an unimaginable existance for people that were never there. And even though it ain't easy over here, i can't think of a single person in all of NYC that could make it like Charles has despite his life and history

when you get down to it, its not HIGHLY different than a very poor trailer park and some places in america. Alot of it might be bootlegged, but in one way or another, most of the ppl in the favelas have roofs, electricity, running water, cell phones with net connection, nice clothes, and alot even have cars. Overall, it could be considered maybe a little more ghetto version of ghetto living in the US tbh. I dont think alot of americans would have near as a hard of time adapting to favela life as they would life in some parts of the world. I think having his daughter but also not killing himself to fw when he clearly is an even big lw that he’s reallly come into his prime though. I think tbh the way Charles path has gone is more entertaining to watch then khabib, and that’s not taking away from khabib or to pretend like he wasn’t dominant the way he was because he was simply born talented because obviously worked everyday to be as good as he was, but to watch someone overcome adversity to me is more fulfilling then just watching someone utterly dominant everyone.

what an amazing research you did, as a brazilian, its quite appreciated that you mentioned how different Rio's and Sao Paulo's slums are, i saw in others Charles's videos on youtube, just mentioned as if he was the same reality as Rio's slums. If you look at the statistics of fighter backgrounds, most come from poor, sometimes extremely poor (like Charles or Ngannou) backgrounds with no other options for socioeconomic advancement (like Gaethje only having mine work if he didn't fight). It's very rare to see a fighter come from a wealthy, or even a lower Middle Class background, and if you listen to fighter stories coming up, they lived in pretty atrocious conditions until they find some form of support (sponsorship, loans by gyms, or just amateur fight purses). Because not many people are going to choose to fight if they have other options. I mean what are you going to do if you have two options and one of them pays better from the start and doesn't include serious risk to your health? In other words we get entertainment from watching a bunch of people trying to escape poverty by giving each other CTE. It's why higher fighter pay at all levels and better fighter treatment (organization provided medical insurance, financial support at low levels, etc) should be a priority.

mma is philosophical, anything that makes you work that hard inspired by your own troubles and ambitions is gonna fuel people analysing it
Though Gaethje was never my favorite fighter, as a fan, it’s always been easy to appreciate his toughness and showmanship. Through the whole press tour for ufc 274 when Gaethje decided to trot out the dusty old “Charles is a quitter” line I was shaking my head. I knew Justin was prone to that sort of nonsensical denial of facts, but man did he highlight a major character flaw. If you know about Charles then you understand that he’s got a rare level of physical and psychological endurance. Gaethje grew up in the American middle class, had a pretty normal life and opportunities for an American. Charles had to fight so much harder to get where he is. I’m not a Gaethje hater (yet) but I did take satisfaction in seeing his fat head looking like a ham as he tapped out to “the quitter” in round one. Do Bronx 💪🏼

Lol u don’t know anything about Justin’s family and growing up. Pretty sure His family are all miners in Arizona who work every day in a way u can’t imagine in the mines. He ain’t some middle class American white kid 😂😂😂

You are right about Charles. But very very wrong about Gaethje. Dude isn’t some middle class silver spoon kid. I’m pretty sure Molly even made a video about him and his upbringing :)
damn what a legend, he is stronger than steel
This is a piece of art! Charles deserves every single moment he is living now.
I'm in tears. I've got no right to be, but I'm so proud of Charles. A man to admire and a man to aspire to be.
I’ve seen damn near all of your videos and this is one of your very best. What a story! The champion has a name and it’s Charles Oliveira.
Beautiful closing statement as always!
This documentary brought tears to my eyes I lived in a favela in São Paulo and I remember how hard my neighbours worked to survive and I left São Paulo because my minimum wage job wasn't enough to pay the rent and buy food at the same time but now I live in Aracaju and I live in a favela here too but my rent is only 280 reais a month but I still see the suffering around me but everyone helps each other like if my neighbour has no food I share my eggs and rice with them and they do the same with me
The quality of your content is on another level. Thank you for all your hard work
Charles has possibly the best resume of any LW ever. Look at the guys he beat and how. He has 33 wins. 21subs 9KOs and only 3 decisions!!(i know some at 45) Unreal! Great video though. Super well made and researched 👊
I'm glad you've done one for Olivera. He's deserving of it. Hes fast becoming my new favourite ufc fighter.
Man, there is nothing that can stop me from supporting Oliveira, his story, and everything else, it is amazing.
As much as I hate to admit, I've never been an Olivera fan and I didn't see him ever becoming champion. I knew he came up poor but I never appreciated what it really took for him to make it out. This video has definitely helped me see him in new light and gain a higher level of respect for him. He has such an inspirational story that it's hard not to like him once you know it.
Make sure you credit the hard work of the animator. Ben Thomas, he put a lot of heard work into the David and Goliath animation @ 1:22 and certainly doesn't deserve to not have credit for it. Especially in a story about how much someone worked so hard to achieve all he did.
I've only cried once watching UFC (not bawling but tears of joy) and it was when Oliveira won belt.
I'll never say a bad word about Charles Oliveira again. What a man.
Thank you for taking the time to make this informative and inspiring video, along with all your others. It adds so much depth to the current MMA space. Thanks man!
Man you’ve knocked it out of the park again. Quality content as always mate 👌🏼
Damn what a powerful story. Nothing short of heroic struggle. Charles is an inspiration.
I met this guy at a restaurant in Vegas recently with Figuerero, could not have been more humble and a class act. Rooting for him
Damn Molly. You got it with this one. This actually made me get up and do some things i needed to do with my life. The ball is at least rolling for me. Hasn't in years
Phenomenal content again Molly. Deepest appreciations for this one, Thank you.
Bro this was amazing. Thank you for making this
this was so well done, congrats man
