Warren Jeffs' polygamous sect, FLDS, in 'sacred land' standoff

For the past century, the community of Short Creek, on the border between Utah and Arizona, has been the stronghold of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They’re known for practicing polygamy and following the prophet Warren Jeffs, currently serving a life sentence for pedophilia. Most of the land in Short Creek belongs to a trust founded by the FLDS church, but now managed by former FLDS members. Since current members won’t cooperate with the new secular management of the trust, many FLDS homes are facing eviction.

Only a few of the people are free, many hundreds - thousands - are still just as trapped and believing as ever. Countless children are still separated from their parents and have been for years. Many have no clue who their parents are. They are trafficked and traded around between "caretakers" until they're old enough to be put to work. I have nearly 100 nieces and nephews who are still trapped out there - and that's only counting those who are related to me by blood. The town is changing, yes, but the FLDS are not.

She is creating propaganda that is misleading at best, and supports the leaders in their control of the people. She's getting a degree in media psychology and is using her knowledge to skew the truth in the FLDS, in an effort to sway public opinion. She wants people to think these are just good, devout people who want to worship god in peace. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know. I was FLDS for the first 40 years of my life. I attended school under Warren Jeffs, and I know all about it - from the inside.

Before 2018 if you went into Colorado City in daylight or went through there with your lights on you can get harassed and if you went through Cane Beds Arizona or Pipe Springs you can get shot. Not anymore! Starting in 2018 the FLDS don't control the police, the God Squad has been disbanded, most of the boys have been ran out of town or are in prison, the AUB and their group Priesthood Protection Team has disbanded and they have been driven out of Utah and Arizona and the Neo Nazi and Patriot Front training camp in Cane Beds has closed raided by the ATF with their leader Ammon Bundy serving time in Idaho for running as a carpetbagger. Miss Information - That’s so true. The incidence of birth defects and health issues is rising while their access to medical care is decreasing. It’s a horrifying convergence that will only get worse. They now have only 15 men in the entire church who are allowed to father children. If a woman wants to have a child, she has to be assigned to one of those men and have sex with them and her husband has to silently watch. There is no way in hell this practice isn’t going to lead to catastrophic health issues.

They send women out in front of the cameras while they cower behind their skirts. You never see the top guys or their families in the public eye. Instead they instruct their followers to lie and create propaganda. I know, I spent 40 years in the FLDS. I sat in their meetings and heard the instructions with my own ears.

I did not know until years later, but she stood out to me back then... I was not close to her, but she would be around in our group of friends from time to time, we were in a wedding together... And years later, my close friend had relayed to me a bit about what was she had gone through... I was like OMG, it's true what I heard as a child ! And all this time I knew this girl and I wish I could have hugged her or something. It really make you think about what you don't know others have gone through. Children go hungry because they have 100 siblings they also use government benefits because they are not married “legally ” When you dish out child brides and don’t think anything is wrong with that I believe there is a price to pay non of us are exempt from the law even God said you should abide by the law of the land and this land polygamy is illegal along with children being brides and they stop their education at a young age to keep their followers in line.

Congratulations to Christine for moving into this community to deal with this situation with love and understanding. And secondary to Jeff Barlow, who also looks like he is trying to find solutions. People who have not lived within these types of belief systems cannot understand. Men sometimes go to extraordinary lengths to legitimize uncontrolled sexual drives, and Warren Jeffs was one of those. These women and children, and yes the men, who have also been manipulated and deceived, deserved better. Hopefully love and understanding can move this community forward so that the church members can see that the outside world is not all bad, but also to acknowledge that parts of their belief and practices were definitely bad, and many people have been hurt. Wishing you the very best.

yup and although some of them have accepted our ways most of the older generation still worship Warren Jeffs. Most of those who did not pay their taxes or listen to Christine, the girls on Escaping Polygamy, Rachel Jeffs, or the boys from Breaking the Faith have been evicted. Those that have been in Warren's inner circle are in jail some awaiting execution. Also half the city has become a tourist attraction. Most of the FLDS who are still here have comingled with the Centennials and the Midianites. I seen a few come up to Idaho they come into Costco to eat and most go to the collage. Christine had the UEP and the mayors of both towns pass a new set of laws. 1. No worshiping Warren Jeffs, 2. you must obey the laws of Utah, Arizona, and the United States, 3. you must pay your taxes, 4. if your family has women in it no more then six are allowed on the property, 5. no pickups or teenage boys are allowed in city limits or on any streets after hours, 6. No violating curfew or playing truant, 7. no boys or men may enlist in the God Squad, Priesthood Protection Team, the Neo Nazis, or join Ammon Bundy's group Patriot Front, 8. no city cameras may be used to spy of the public, 9. No Colorado City residents may engage in road rage or make any arrest without a member of the Utah Highway Patrol or an officer of the Arizona Department of Public Safety present, and 10 No buildings may be operated in Warren's name or any fence may be constructed around them except for a public dwelling. Any FLDS who fail to comply by these rules will be evicted and their buildings and fences will be torn down and the land given to residents of Utah or Arizona, all boys and men who violate the law will be arrested and sent to jails in Utah or Arizona with those in Utah subject to execution by shooting in the prison yards, any children caught playing truant or seen worshiping Warren will be taken away and they will never see their families ever again, and if you violate the occupancy agreement and have any women in your house they will be taken away and they will be sent to prison. Those laws are harsh but those are the laws since 2018.

Kudos to Christine. She’s been an absolute angel for those who have left the cults, it’s also good and decent that she found a way for these mothers and their children to not end up homeless. Hopefully her goodwill will show them that she is not a threat and only wants what is best for them. And good on the former members who run the trust only sending letters if they haven’t paid their taxes for 5 years, only when they have to. It’s not like they’re kicking them out for still being in FLDS.

The FLDS position on signing contracts with non-members, seems a little situational. They can't sign an agreement with a non-FLDS member. Great, so how do they buy a car, rent a u-haul truck, or get their electricity? Those all require them to enter into agreements with non-members, and I notice they're all driving new cars, using moving trucks, and it would appear that their homes do not lack electric service. So, I'd have to agree that their problems are - to a large part - an attempt on their part to generate a cause célèbre, and some sympathy for their position. On the other hand, the asshole with the white beard seems to me to be getting just a little too much enjoyment out of his job, which is - after all - kicking people out of homes that they and their families have lived in for generations. I'm not seeing any white hats here.

What makes me sad is that the leaders of these cults take the bible and completely twisted it and then brainwash vulnerable people. God is love and His intentions for His creation has always been freedom, joy and peace. Jesus came to this world to show us the true nature of His Father. If people were to read the words of Jesus for themselves and ask questions they would find freedom from all oppression and manipulation and find true peace for their souls. Jesus came to save us and give us abundant life and this lifestyle and belief system is nothing close to that promise.

We were given access to Warren Jeffs compound in Laredo, TX in 2015. It was amazing. LE raided his compound and left it under the care of the State and thus the local sheriff who was great. He let us use the property and access buildings as we deemed necessary. LE had the entire church marked of meticulously but forgot an entire section during their scan of religious books that went back to Brigham Young. These books were originals and old. They were secured behind a huge bank like vault in the buildings basement near the creepy little girl showers. They had a nice compound and the orchard was excellent. The books made a nice fire.
