I watched this video when I quit drinking 3 years ago during new years eve of 2018. I was 23. Alcohol ravaged my life from ages 21-22. I relapsed on my 24th birthday, quit again, but started again few months later. Alcohol ruined my life again until the age of 25. I finally quit much later at the age of 26 and here I am again, 8 months sober now. But the damage has been done. My life is ruined at this young age and my connections with people are broken.

Drinking to excess is merely a symptom. One should look for the emotional pain that is causing the person to self medicate with alcohol. Just dealing with drinking and calling it a disease is just treating the symptom and until you stop ignoring the underlying cause will only lead to failure.

I used to get a 12 pk after work every night. To loosen up and to power through a late night painting session. Even though that is bad, I would make that my cut off and go to bed. Then I convinced myself that I didn't want to be holding onto a warm beer so I would just chug them. Soon that would run out and I would go get more late at night. Then I convinced myself that a 5th of whiskey would save money and then I also wouldn't run out of beer. Soon I was chugging cups of whiskey followed by chugging a beer. Then I started saving a couple beers for the hangover before going to work. Then simply drinking the entire time I wasn't at work. Until I walked in and as soon as I walked out. Then I had a seizure at work. I woke up on the floor surrounded by my co workers and EMS. I said I was fine, no memory at all. They made me go to the emergency room. Still I continued to drink, having seizures and blackouts. Breaking my ribs, hitting my head. I'm much better now but still a switch gets flipped and I'm a monster. I easily slam a 6pk in 30 min and only wake up even more. I never throw up and can go for days straight without eating. Like a shark in a feeding frenzy. My eyes roll back and don't stop as long as I can smell blood. Even worse, even after weeks of sobriety I get bored and miss the chaos. Like a slingshot let go I fly fast. I remember thinking that if life sucks this bad when I'm sober, I might as well just have the buzz too. If it weren't for my wife I would probably commit suicide by alcohol poisoning.

yes. And the energetic body becomes over sensitive in general, whilst f.e smoking hardens. Rudolf Steiner also has made some fantastic informative info on alcohol and explains in great detail what it does. I've suffered from addiction for years, not being aware i was addicted. The body is robbed from the spirit-and i didn't realize untill my life became spiritual, i started to develop spiritual practices. It's not a coincidence that the other name for alcohol is spirit.

Yes, true about the risk of alcoholism, but our culture is so intertwined with various uses of alcohol that it is impossible to ban alcohol. We, the society must set clearer limits for use. We are social beings and we can influence each other. Still the deepest cause for addiction is struggle to get rid of ones problems. There is no solution today, but drinking only with friends on parties not more than once a week could reduce the chance of alcoholism. Other method to test yourself is to obstain (not to drink) for at least one month. If you cannot do it, you have a problem with alcohol.

I have read that doctors recommend moderation bc they realistically don’t expect anyone to abstain 100%, so they shoot for minimizing the intake in their patients. Very sad that they can’t be completely honest and let us know the actual reality - abstinence is the only way to avoid risk, but the less you drink, the lower your risk. So if you choose to drink at all, drink minimally. But we would rather you drink none.

If we learn how to manage our consumption, we can appreciate the positive feelings associated with these substances, while minimizing the negative effects. We only live once, we should be able to enjoy the unhealthy part of life, as long as it doesn't define our lives.

I understand that most of these TEDs are intentionally light on statistics, but it would have been useful to go into, at least briefly, the incidence of the 16 diseases that alcohol may promote. If they are naturally low, a 10% increase is relatively insignificant, if high, that same 10% is far more worrisome.

Also, he shows 15 different graphs (if you look closely the lines showing risk are colored differently for men, women, and both genders) but with the captions on he says alcohol causes 60 (not 16) other diseases. I agree, would be good to dive in to the statistics more.

For myself I grew up being taught that drinking alcohol was a sin. I have learned that, that is not true. Instead drinking alcohol is healthy in moderation. Now I am trying to get in the habit of drinking more alcohol so I can have better health. I have and I recommend anyone give up soft drinks because they are loaded with corn syrup. They will put you in the grave. My sister said when she was young that she promised herself that; when she got older she would drink all the soft drinks she wanted. She was on dialysis for 10 years before dying of a heart attack in her 60s. My mother also had a 6 bypass in her 60s plus stents, and major osteoporosis. And you guessed it, they didn't drink alcohol. But sadly, today we seldom here about the soft drink addiction or how they are destroying people's lives. 🙂 in contrast my in laws have drunk alcohol all their lives. My father in law is 90 now and my mother in law is in her 80s. They are both still going. And neither one have ever had a surgery in their whole life. George Burns is another example. Fact is if you drink alcohol in moderation and get rid of soft drinks etc. You will be healthier and add years to your life!!!! Many think drinking alcohol is a sin because of Proverbs 23:31-33 "Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things." However red fermented wine, is the same color as before it was fermented. Plus you can get drunk on white wine. And fermented wine does not move either. What it is talking about in Proverbs 23:31-33 is Do not continue drinking when you can feel your face has turned red and things around the room or the cup looks like it is moving due to you being drunk; do not continue to drink or you will be saying all kinds of perverse things to women strangers etc. because you are over drunk. The translation could be better. Fact is the Bible never teaches against drinking alcohol,. It only teaches not to overdo it, and for people like Judges, not to be drunk when hearing cases. Etc.

I have a family history of heart disease, but not cancer. My guess is that a couple of glasses of wine has a small net benefit for me. Is there a safe limit for soft drinks, for instance? You can mess up your liver with fructose just as surely as with alcohol, and increase heart disease, with no benefits. If you have a problem maintaining a moderate level of alcohol, that's one thing. But the endless "alcohol is poison" comments make me tune out.

Why try to explain why alcohol is bad with questionable reasonings when there is data ? The only interesting thing was the apparent increase in the probability to develop 16 diseases from alcohol use, and we didn't get numbers... Really disappointing for a 19min video !

Info wrong and misleading to put it mildy, and talk English properly! My advice is ignore this guy completely! His advice is completely wrong, just another like the sound of my own voice vid. I'm not going into great detail because it would be a book to say whats wrong with this, use google and wiki! One tip 28units of whiskey or 28 units of vodka NO they are not the same! 40% alcohol causes you to dehydrate, cider @ 7.5% does not! Quite clearly this guy has not been an alcoholic and knows nothing about it.

Nonsense. If you think cider doesn't dehydrate you, empty your bladder and start drinking. Now fill the empty cider bottles with piss (we alcoholics have practice). You will run out of bottles because for every pint you drink, you'll piss 1.25 pints or more. 28 units of vodka and 28 units of whiskey *is* the same. It's the *same amount of alcohol* - the substance being measured in units. "Google and Wiki it". {facepalm} P.S. I come from a long and illustrious line of alcoholics and I'm just 15 days sober. A 30 year+ non-stop session brought me here. I'm somewhat qualified in terms of personal experience and I'm afraid you're simply ignorant of the facts.

"for every pint you drink, you'll piss 1.25 pints or more" ... I have heard this urban legend before and it is nonsense. Think about it - a person will die after 3 days without water. If what you say is true, a person who drinks nothing but cider will be dead of dehydration in less than 3 days! Does that sound right to you? I'm not saying dead from alcohol poisoning, but if you drank say 5 ciders a day and nothing else, would you die of dehydration in less than 3 days? I don't think so! Anyway congratulations on getting sober, I am not encouraging alcohol use but this dehydration argument you gave can't possibly be true.

ChrisFarmer You're forgetting the % of yourself that's made of water. It's quite a lot. And - yes, you can die of dehydration in hours, let alone days. P.S. made it to day 32. Had a few vodkas tonight ;) lol

MAX LAWLESS™ No, I'm not forgetting that. In fact, when you die of dehydration it is because that amount gets too low. What I'm saying is do you really believe a person trapped on a raft who only had cider to drink would be dead before the person with nothing to drink? Because if your idea is true, this must be the case. Today is Friday. Do you think if I drank only 5 ciders today and 5 tomorrow and didn't have any water, that I would be dead by Sunday morning? There are plenty of alcoholics who have proved that wrong.
