Walt Disney World 1991 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Marketed as the first "All-Kids" Super Bowl, this halftime presentation involved elaborate character props, hundreds of children, costumed characters, a message from President George H.W. Bush, and a performance by New Kids on the Block.

I have spent YEARS trying to find this. It only took this long because I didn’t know what to search for. I’ve had a vague memory of Chip and Dale singing the “Can’t Touch This” portion of the song, and the only words I could remember were “AFC” “NFC” and “San Francisco 49ers.” I thought I was remembering a prime time special promoting a new Disney cartoon or maybe something that aired on the Disney Channel. Nope! It was a Super Bowl halftime show! It was nice to see it again after all these years and now I can finally put the mystery to rest.

Not gonna lie, this is some weird shit. But honestly I’m pretty sure my late mother appreciated it seeing how my older brother was born that year & my dad was serving in the Marine Corps boots on ground for Operation Desert Storm. And I believe that my dad was actually allowed in the middle of his active duty tour to come home for a little while to see my brother being born & be there for my mother in that first critical week after having a newborn. I bet he also saw this & thought it was hella weird but probably also appreciated it for being an active duty serviceman & a newly made dad.

The halftime show pre Michael Jackson was... something. I get the patriotism because it was the first real war the US had been in since Vietnam... and... that one didn't go so well. But beyond the understandable patriotism, the message and themes of the halftime show are just all over the place. There's no consistency, weird breaks, Disney sponsoring the whole thing for some reason, singing Disney songs that just don't go with a football game, etcetera. Like, just wild to see today.

If people thought that this was bad, they were in for a shitshow the very next year. The 1992 “Winter Magic” show in Minneapolis was so bad that more people flipped channels to watch the special episode of In Living Color airing at the exact same time. It also inspired the NFL, over the fear of letting the ratins get eclipsed that bad ever again, to go out and get Michael Jackson to perform what is in my opinion one of, if not the greatest halftime shows ever produced. Btw this is coming from a Minnesotan who doesn’t think they did that ‘92 show justice at all.

It's darn near 30 years later. And so help me, I *still* don't think it's at all possible to adequately describe the many and varied ways me and my girl friends were feeling when we all, as (just a reminder) teenage girls in the early '90s, tuned in for what had been *very* heavily advertised as "A New Kids on the Block Halftime Show" and we all saw... this... Actually, that kid's "I'm not familiar with the kinds of things I'm seeing...?" face they zoom into at 12:43 comes pretty close. (It's still -better- a heck of a lot more interesting than Maroon 5 was. Hell, Mickey Mouse saying "Thanks to our armed forces everywhere" at the finale *alone* is a damn sight more interesting than Maroon 5 was!)
