This is a great video. I've been looking for it for months. The Eaton Model 7 Hydrostatic Transmission is also used in Grasshopper and Simplicity riding lawn mowers. The Model 11 is used is some Wheel Horse garden tractors too.

Thanks for posting this. I have 2 of these to open up off my Grasshopper ZTR mower. I'm afraid to see what condition is inside. The roller chain and sprockets are extremely worn out, so I doubt if it ever got maintenance except after catastrophic failure. I bet I find that my pintle is scored as well. It does appear there is an inner bushing, and as I have a pretty good machine shop, I could grind the pintle until clean surface, then make a new bushing from leaded bronze, and drill the oil passage holes. At least that's the plan.

Thats really ambitious, and i hope it works for you. I thought about doing the same thing to this one but i really didnt need it and i dont have precise tools for the job. Keep me posted! Im interested to see how it turns out and what the insides of the transmissions look like.

Thanks for the video. I've got a John Deere 165 with one of these pumps. It works fine in reverse but is super slow going forward. I'm assuming the pump is damaged, but there's no rebuild kits available anyway.

The race in the cast-iron part of the transmission is off-center. After taking this part off it can be rotated 180 degrees before it is put back on. If the lobe of the offset is positioned on the same side as the dump valves, the output will turn CCW. If the lobe of the offset is positioned on the side opposite of the dump valves, the output will turn CW.

Hi Cade I have a question about the Eaton transmission the one part you did not remove in the video was the shaft with T shaft how does those two shafts come apart?

What pulls back on the activation/drive lever? Mine does not pull freely when I pull it. i.e. lever stays in position unless if I pull it back myself.

If these get worn out can they be rebuilt? Is that why you are disassembling? My left drive pump is pooched. Thx

Great content...thank you for the demonstration. Question; is there a place to buy used hard parts? Do you rebuild these units for hire? Have a bit of trouble with one side of my walker MDD...little power....

Dana Farmer regretfully, eaton doesn't sell a rebuild kit for this transmission, however, I currently have one of these listed on ebay for $400 or $520 buy it now. it's for sale by marco newman (seller name) and there's a video of me demonstrating it on this channel as well. Thanks!

Cade, Any ideas on how to free a stuck lockout pin without having to remove the hydro from the mower?

  • @CadeIvy

    @CadeIvy

the pin should have a 5/16 or 8mm bolt head, spray penetrating oil around the base and rotate the head no more than one turn to the left while trying to move the pin, then work the pin left to right while trying to pull it in and out until it moves freely, when it’s finally free just re torque the bolt to a few foot pounds

My Zero turn has independent pumps for the left and the right drive wheels. The left hand pump doesn't work and the right one does. I have an good extra right hand pump. Can that one be adjusted to use on the left side?

Jeanne Keenan if it’s a walker you can and with most mid mounts you can, for a walker just take the hydraulic unit separate from the gearbox, there should be two t40 torx screws in the back, take those loose, and without separating the two housings, spin the back side 180 degrees until the two screws line back up, now it will work for the other side, side note is you will have to order a fan for the correct direction as the original will now blow backwards

do you have the company name that you order parts from, I have a CCW 700-032 walker pump that stop working and have taken it apart and can not find anything wrong with it.

Jim Blackford i don’t have a company i buy parts from, i usually just frakenstein them together if parts are damaged, are you sure there’s no internal scoring? sure the neutral valve isn’t stuck open?

Jonathan Anderson well, the reservoir has a mesh screen at the bottom that has very small holes. the oil takes a VERY long time to flow through it. Just fill it up and give it time

This all started because the output pulley became loose and wore down the shaft so much that the pulley just spun freely around the shaft. So I had to replace the shaft and pulley. I hope it's okay that I poured some oil into the top breather hole. It was new oil and the surface of the pump was clean so I doubt any dirt got in. It's working now but not quite as peppy as it used to be. The oil looks like it has some air bubbles which could make it slightly compressible(?). Maybe over time air bubbles will rise to the top and the transmission will become tighter. Does that sound right?

Jonathan Anderson just add oil to the full line on the cup, and it should go down and then you'll need to fill it up again

Keep tightening the cap on the resevoir and the cup will spin off. Then you can fill the hydro and have no air bubbles

How much hydraulic oil did you put in? chances are its empty again, i found that you have to fill the reservoir about 10 times until it finally holds fluid, because the mesh screen in the bottom is so fine that it takes a good 20 minutes for the oil you put in to fully drain into the transmission unit, so repeatedly fill it until it fills no more. One way to quicken this process is to remove the 11/16 drain plug in the TOP of the transmission right behind the plastic reservoir, and wait until fluid is coming out of the the top of this hole and then cap it off. This will speed up the process because it allows air to escape, remember to tighten the top cap when youre finished
