I keep a roll of Gasket paper just for these situation. Have even use a coke cola can for a gasket on a twin cabby 1967 Mini. Worked just fine.

I was thinking of improvising gaskets for the gearboxes. My dumb question is: does it matter what type of material I use?

Hell of job Brian. The edger blade was a great idea to make sure she was flush. Homemade gaskets are the best. And finished, working, no leaks ending product is the best feeling that makes that pit in your stomach disappear. The time master also had a timed bladed. I also set mine horizontal & vertical too. Great video.

You can make gaskets out of a cereal box or any kind of cardstock material.

+ketchuph8r cardboard like. cereal boxes work great. This is an old trick that's been around for years. You don't always have the parts available, so you have to make them yourself sometimes.

This is a very old video and I am sure you know by now but for anyone watching this video .... You don't fill the gearboxes all the way up. You fill them until the horizontal shaft inside is just completely submerged which is about 2/3 full. Needs some air space in there or it will blow out your seals. You have had much more experience since so again I am sure you know... But didn't want someone watching to do the wrong thing. Also I doubt that gearbox was bad and leaking, whatever you hit that bent the deck prob broke the seal between the axle tube and the box where you made a gasket for. But hey, a spare is nice to have

  • @bruceloy9229

Exactly. Don't fill completely up with gear oil. Just 2/3. Otherwise more problems to come!

Definitely the way to go. If you've got the tools and the know-how to do it yourself, you save a lot of money. The key thing is not touch it if you don't know what it is, because sometimes incompetent DIY work ends up costing more. If in doubt, consult the Google.

Do not fill the gear boxes all the way up. Take the lids off and fill till the gear oil covers the shaft. Also, RTV gear oil gasket sealer may work even better than a real gasket.

if you have a problem with the gasket or gearboxes constantly leaking just put the stock gaskets back in put Loctite on the bolts take the fill screws all of the gear boxes and threatened grease nipples and fill the gear boxes with grease you'll never have a problem with your boxer leaking ever again

  • @keithsimmons951

Matt, I don't think those gears are designed to handle thick grease. Way too stiff and the grease will just get thrown off to the side. Seems like the thick grease if filled full would slow those blades down to much and not spin as fast as they should to cut grass and shoot it up the chute to avoid clogging. Just a thought.

+ndleinahaystack The gear oil flows from one side to the next. I don't think it has to be filled all the way up but I fill mine up. The gears sit somewhere around halfway in the box.
