I replaced the seal and bearing on my charge pump. The the seal wore after 2o+ yrs and was sucking air into the system Making the tractor virtually inoperable. My eaton 11 is on a troy bilt gtx18 so everything works off the charge pump, final drive, steering and implement lift. Anyway I learned a lot about the pump and as you probably found out, the play in that shaft is normal when the pump is off. It's the bearing in the charge pump that keeps the shaft from moving from side to side and the two small wire retainer rings on either side of the bearing keep it from moving in and out. When I put the pump back on I forgot to put the inner bearing retainer ring in and when I pressed the bearing in, I used a length of 1/4-20 theaded rod that threaded into the end of the shaft with a socket, washer and nut to press it in. When the bearing was seated, I continued turning the screw thinking it would stop when the bearing was fully seated but seeing I forgot that inner ring, the shaft just kept pulling out until the shaft pin in the housing was pulled hard against the cover. When I couldn't turn it anymore, I thought the bearing was seated so I took the pressing tool off and when I tried to spin the shaft, it wouldn't spin. That's when I realized I forgot the ring, took it back apart and did it again. I got it all back together and it works great again. I was just wondering when you couldn't turn the shaft if maybe you didn't put that inner ring in.

Good tip on the ball bearings. My problem with tearing things down come when I try to put it back together.

Years ago I took pictures and still do, now i use my phone to capture where things go. I'm sure I'll be using these youtube videos and footage to get it back together correctly. Digital pics were absolutely key to me getting my Wheel Horse 520H back together. I didn't reassemble until a year later and I couldn't remember where anything went.

Watching this brings back horrific memories of doing the steering box on the Ford. Dont even want to go there again and mess with all 53 of thosw ball bearings. That pump looks to be a real simple set up compared to that. Glad nothing was wrong in there! Great video!

I didn't know what to expect when I got in there, but I'm feeling pretty good about the repair. I did find an oil seal I replaced that wasn't flush and I'm wondering if that was why when I tightened everything down the shaft didn't want to turn. It may have been pinching the shaft. Either way, good for me to get into this as the fiber gasket had failed from 30 years of abuse from the previous owner. Now I'm online looking for braided hose to replace my kink, may replace it all now that it's apart.

I was hoping to see you put this back together. I looked and didn't see a video on this. I have 2 model 6 versions of this pump/motor on my Grasshopper ZTR mower (left and right). I have not opened them up to see how worn they are. But everything in the drive line is shot, as the previous owners appear to never have done maintenance until there was a failure. And the grasshopper has these so tightly packaged, that getting to a drain plug would be impossible.

I didn't video it because there were too many fails. Putting it back together was a breeze, but once I tightened the 6 bolts to the pump impeller, the shaft wouldn't turn. I had that thing apart 10 different times, making sure I didn't let any bearings out as they are mated to the proper holes. I replaced a shaft bearing and finally it went back together and the shaft turned easily. I must say that this hydro was totally and completely abused. If you crack into one of these, they're not difficult but get a manual and read it before doing it. The manual had me build a wood frame to allow the shaft to sit so I could pound out the bearings and seals. New seals and bearings, it works like new. Best of all, I run Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic which this pump really likes in cold weather.

4:32 how do you get the pintle assembly out? And if two of the balls fell out when I pulled the motor rotor out. How can you find their correct placement?

You should go on Red Square.com and get the Eaton 1100 service manual, its free. I haven't rebuilt that in a long time, but there was a form it tells you to build out of a 2x4 to get the pump elevated so you can pull it out (think that was the part). If you lost two balls use a micro meter to see if there is a difference in either ball, or hole. I remember in the manual to not lose the balls. LOL.

I got a JD185 with an eaton drive. oddly when it is put in F it goes in reverse,R it goes forward. Drive doesn't slip other than the shift no prob. The pump case is dirty and hasn't been opened, the belt is installed per JD diagram properly. Not sure what to think.

It’s a linkage issue if it works otherwise. I would look at the top of the pump where the linkage is.

They say in the manual to buy a new housing, which was possible in 1989 when this was made but now it's unavailable. Probably could find it through Eaton, but I know a machine shop locally that could do it for me. I'm not sure it needs to be replaced though. I found a new oil seal I installed that was high on once side maybe 1/32" or so, that may be what caused the shaft to stop turning when everything was tightened down. This bushing is immersed in oil all the time so it and the shaft are in great condition for 27 years of work.

I have a 1997 416 toro wheelhorse since new with the eaton hydro and it keeps going slower and slower and barely goes in reverse now . Can you give me an idea what maybe wrong . I change the oil in the trany every couple of years and it is only used to mow my own 1 acre lawn in northern Maine . The hr. meter doesn't work so I don't know the hrs. . It is always kept in the garage when not in use . Been a great mower just don't know if it is worth fixing . Can you still get parts for these now ? I have taken off the seat and pan and don't see any problems with the linkage . Thanks

It's hard to say. Assuming it hasn't overheated by the pump fins being covered in grass and cottonwood, it could be the wrong filter or choice of oil. If it was going slower forward, it would go faster in reverse because of the linkage set up. I would warm it up, change the fluid and filter (get a good quality transmission filter, not automotive. I run full synthetic 10w30 in my eaton 1100. It makes a big difference. Check that you don't have any leaks or dirty oil patches around the main pulley or fins. After that, I'd check over the linkages to be sure they are set up right, but sounds like it's a fluid restriction problem.

I've always wondered how much horsepower one of these will actually take. The factory Eaton spec says 20hp, but Toro also ran a 23hp Daihatsu/Briggs diesel in the 523DXi... and I've never heard of one failing. I have several old Sundstrand inline trannies that could definitely stand to be replaced with one of these. Anybody have experience with putting more than 20hp through these?

I think they referenced it as light duty in the manual if you can believe that. The 1100 is a fine transmission. I wish I would have done a full video on putting it back together. The seal kit worked great, I have no leaks and run Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic in it, very nice transmission.

@@CraigArndt - I know they work great within spec. I wish they made one with an auxiliary charge pump. My Groundsmaster uses a Sundstrand inline trans, with a charge pump. The charge pump supplies pressure and flow to the transmission, power steering, deck lift, and fluid cooler. If only the 11 series Eaton had an auxiliary...

Not hard at all. Actually it all went pretty well. In the wheel horse manual for the Eaton transmission it shows you how to do it. You can get that from Red Square if you aren’t a member of that forum. They have all the old manuals for free download. Very helpful.
