The KICKR CLIMB is definitely an interesting product. It’s a cool piece of device that was intended to blend assents and descents with resistance changes for a truly immersive indoor training experience.
I have been using the CLIMB for about a month and I have to admit, it was a lot of fun. Putting it in front of a big screen tv, climbing the Alpe du Zwift or racing, it made riding a bit more fun and interesting.

Would you consider adding the KICKR CLIMB to your pain cave?

Good content. I like the concept in general. As you mention, I mainly use TrainerRoad for driving workouts. I don't think I like that concept. So it may not make sense for most of my use. But it could be fun for the Fondo and races I sometimes fit in around the training. Thanks for the detailed review. I think a handy person could design a part that could hold all the spare axle parts. It could mount in the open triangle at the bottom and keep the parts all together. Then it could be made on a 3D printer with ease. I could possibly do a design, but I will need to get one or some dimensions in order to make a useful design.

Definitely! Other trainers should be made compatible though or the competition should come up with alternatives and drive the price down.

Hi there, great video, thanks for making it. I'm thinking about buying the Climb to use during the winter months with my Kickr. I do not care about the real climb feeling as much as I do about comfort during long rides, since doing more than 3 hours on the trainer is usually really painful for me even compared to up to 12-15 hours randos on the bike outside. Do you think having the Climb adds real feeling in that sense? Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed the video. The problem with having your bike on a stationary trainer is that the bike is static and doesn’t move and that is usually the cause of discomfort. Having the bike move can help a bit. But also having a good fan and a good fit might help more. So would the kickr help with discomfort? maybe. I personally didn’t notice as much but also, I’m fine riding indoor for many hours without issues.

In the videos where you are riding, it appears that there is a lot of movement on the climb unit. Does it feel unstable at all?

I have a climb and I generally like it. The biggest problem is that Zwift often fails to deliver the gradient info to the unit. I’ve done all kinds of experiments and there’s no rhyme or reason to when it works and when it does not. You often won’t know that anything is wrong until 5 minutes into a Zwift ride because they usually start at 0%. So as soon as you warm up... nothing. You have a $650 front wheel stand. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I started noticing the same thing recently where the kickr doesn’t even respond to changes in gradients changes. This started happening for me after the latest Innsbruck update.

How is the Kicker Climb doing sprints. There are some sprint times on Zwift. Can you really pedal hard and be aggressive while riding on it?

  • @SmartBikeTrainers

    @SmartBikeTrainers

It’s totally fine. Had no issues with it sprinting 800+ watts for couple of seconds. Just make sure the base of the climb is set right when you first set it up by lifting the front of the bike and letting it balance. Otherwise you might notice it pulling on the kickr a bit when going all out.

I'm looking at replacing my first gen Neo with either a 2nd Gen or a 2018 with a Climb. Any thoughts? In particular, I do like the slight side to side movement the Neo has - does the addition of the climb get anywhere near to this movement when used with the Kickr, or does it still feel substantially more 'locked down' than the Neo? Subjective I know, but which would you say has the greater impact on realism - Tacx's 'road feel' and downhill drive, or the climb unit on the Kickr? Cheers Dave

That’s a tough one. There are a lot of things I like about the NEO and a lot of things I like about the KICKR with the Climb. I do miss the slight side to side movement when I am not on the NEO but I seem to be ok when not using the Climb for a while and sometimes just lazy to remove the front wheel and setup the Climb. But when all setup, I do enjoy it. The one thing about the climb is, if you do a lot of structured workouts, you won’t benefit from it since it doesn’t work when in workout mode.

Thanks for that, appreciated. I generally free ride on Zwift, I don’t really do the workouts. Leaving the road feel and the climb aside, which would you say has the better / most realistic pedalling feel, or is it just too close to call (I’ve only ever ridden the Neo and rollers, so don’t really have a comparison point)? Do you think the heavier flywheel of the 2018 Kickr has made any difference, or are we firmly in the territory of minuscule gains here? Thanks again.

+David Adams they are very close. I haven’t been on the NEO II yet but I would say the kickr 2018 is a little better as far as road feel than NEO I.

With the Climb, total length seems to me smaller when compared with a regular wheel. Can you say what is the total length using the kickr AND the kickr climb? I'm very tight in space and if it saves some space that would be a small extra advantage for the climb (extra for the more natural cycling feeling). Nice vid btw

No problem. This can vary by a little based on the length of your bike. But it should cut about 5inches from having a front wheel assuming you run a 700c road bike. For reference, my bike length from front fork to rear skewer (skewer to skewer) is 102cm or 40 inches.

Will this improve my climbing ability. My personal riding ability is that I can hold decent wattage on the flat but as soon as it goes uphill and I use different muscle groups then I struggle to maintain the same wattage. Do you believe that using this to improve them muscle groups could be beneficial to my climbing ability? Thanks in advance 😀👍

It won’t hurt and I plan on looking into this in more details in a different video or post. But even if the Climb helps recruit different muscles, at the end of the day, it comes down to the type of training/sets you do on the trainer to improve your strength. You want to do big gear, low cadence type work to prepare you for those hills.

Depends on the ride I’m doing, trainer I have and bike I have on. I look at it as having an additional gear on my bike.

  • @SmartBikeTrainers

Hard to say. You will just have to try both and see which one you like. Some people really like the rockers and find it good and some don’t. The Climb is fun to have and can provide additional interactivity if you do a lot of sim riding. It has no benefits in Erg or structured workouts.
