Elite RIZER In-Depth Review: Climbing + Steering Simulator

Спорт

The simplest way to explain the new Elite RIZER is that they merged a Wahoo CLIMB with an Elite Sterzo Smart, marrying both the steering aspects of the Sterzo Smart with the up and down functionality of the Wahoo CLIMB. Except, that’d probably ignore perhaps the most interesting piece here: It’s not tied to one brand's hardware.
Anyone with a smart trainer that allows the rear axle to move can use the RIZER to simulate grades as well as steering. Sure, there’s some added bits in the Elite trainers firmware that provides a slightly better experience today, but ultimately, it technologically it works with any ANT+ FE-C trainer on the market (which, is all of them). But we’ll get into that later on. Just like I’ll talk about some interesting little configuration bits they’ve got in there to address things that annoyed Zwift users on the Wahoo KICKR CLIMB.
Now, I’ve been using the RIZER on and off since earlier this spring. First on a prototype unit, then a near-final production unit, and now a final-final production unit. Once I’m done with this ever-growing pile of poles I’ll have two options: The first to glue them all together and consider a career in exotic dancing, or the second, to send them back to Elite. Given nobody wants to see my pole dance, I’ll get them all re-boxed and have them pick them up. That’s just the way I roll.

At slow speeds, you definitely steer by turning handlebars. The faster you go, the bigger role plays inertia. You don't steer by leaning. You steer in the opposite direction (called counter steering) to initiate a turn. A bike moves from beneath you causing your body to fall into a turn (and yes, you can use your body in coordination with steering). You don't lean to steer. You lean to stay in a saddle. If you simply tried steering into a turn at high speed, you'd fly off the bike. The bike would steer and you'd continue straight, toppling the bike on your way out. By leaning, you're employing gravity to combat inertia (centrifugal force). And you use steering to control this process. But it should be no problem for your brain to sort it out. To understand that turning bars moves avatar. You're not actually riding a bicycle and you're fully aware of it. It's not meant to simulate steering. It's not a full motion simulator. It's meant to give you a natural way of interacting with a virtual world. Far better than pushing buttons.

While I'm not in the market for something like this, I'd buy it over the climb despite owning a wahoo kickr. Build quality seems better with the different drive systems for elevation, and having steering built in seems like a nice bit of future proofing by Elite.

I was already planning to get Elite trainers for our home in the USA after getting tired of the belt squeaking in my Tacx trainers where we live in Asia. The ability to get climbing simulation and steering seals the deal. I’m looking for four trainers and two rizers, now. All in, it’s still cheaper than a new Dogma frame

I’ve had 3 Kickr Climb units fail on me WHILE RIDING over the years. My Venge Pro slammed down from max elevation 2 times and the third time it was about halfway up on a different bike. These are neat but having so many fail over the years is alarming and was enough reason to make me not choose to buy the Wahoo bike. I hope this unit is more robust for people who buy it.

@@Dcrainmaker The nut on the screw can strip and you will drop to the floor same as a broken belt. In automotive lifts that use a screw there is an additional safety nut that only takes a load once the main nut fails and only allows the unit to lower. Be interesting to ask the manufacturer if they have similar system in place.

  • @jobicek

    @jobicek

    2 жыл бұрын

@@GregsStoneYard You're dealing with order of magnitude lower forces and there is practically no risk of getting crushed in case of a failure - so I would guess no. The crush risk is really the reason those lifts have it, not potential damage to cars. Also, it should be possible to size the screw so that catastrophic failure is practically impossible. Given the price, that thing better be overbuilt. Rally, I was expecting Elite to undercut Wahoo (at most go for similar price with more features). Strange how they price it above their most expensive trainer. No, I would worry more about what happens in case of motor failure. I think that's a more realistic mode. Also, seeing Ray sprint on it, it really begs a question of how a frame is stressed on this thing. It really looked like it's stressed like it wouldn't be with wheels on. Perhaps just an impression. But too much rigidity and stability isn't necessarily a good thing. As it gives you something to push against. On a road, if you push too much, you're going to fall - naturally limiting forces involved. And tires are going to provide some damping.

Will Elite (or Wahoo) just go totally modular? I'm thinking if you have an Elite turbo, you can unscrew the legs or base plate and there's an interface which direct connects into an Elite rocker plate. Same with the Rizer, it'll direct mount securely into the rocker plate too and the turbo/rocker/rizer then becomes one connected eco system with a single wall cable, a consolidated data stream and a total rocking, steering, climbing active simulator which can even give road camber feedback etc.

Hi there, Rizer works only with trainers that have the rotating part in the back (like the Direto XR, Direto XR-T, Suito, Suito-T or Tuo), other trainers won't be compatible.

@@elitecycling Even if Tacx developed a mod for the Neo to allow rotation, you would lose the slight "side to side" motion that the Neo provides. The Rizer paired with a Neo which also gives "Road Feel" would be great though !!!

Ugh the price is a bummer... I'm not sure that the market is there at that price point. Implementation is much better than the climb, but 1100 bucks for a gimmick exceeds the price of high end trainers. I'm not sure if I were Elite that I would put this to market right now with the asterisk apology... I'm sure some of the folks who need to have the latest and greatest will bite, but I think most people are going to pass... A shame considering how solid the product looks. I was thinking a release at $599 and settle in to $499 6 months out. Boy was I off!

It’s tough. But they can basically focus on the Euro market for now, which discounts heavily anyway (and Wahoo doesn’t in this market).

This was an inevitability for another company to make a better mousetrap. I have a Wahoo Kickr Gen 2, but it won't work with KickR Climb (according to Wahoo). If Ray is correct, this will work with the KickR Gen 2 so problem solved!

You've mentioned "pretty solid" several times. That does not sound very good in terms of confort. The bike will now be even more rigid than before, will it not? Given the size of its base would it be compatible with some of the rocker plates out there? Thanks!

I'm new to cycling apps. Really interested in these trainers, but can't help feeling they've 'jumped the shark' when it comes to these apps. To me, off-road training is off-road, so trying to emulate real riding seems a bit pointless. I'd love to know what blind riders think of these things.
