    I see what you mean... and maybe this is because Wado-ryu karate is a blend of Karate and Jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu having some resemblance with aikido. Former Jiu jitsuka myself.

    Very nice display of traditional curriculum, and some of the defenses against the knife might work, if the timing is spot on. My main concern, is that in none of the knife defenses, is the defender actually disarming the attacker and taking possession of the weapon, just in case the attacker is still a threat.

    Wado Ryu seems very similar to pre ww2 kodakan judo combatives. The influence of jujitsu is easy to see. I have no first person experience with shotokan, only the point karate competitions and basic demonstrations on YT. What if anything did Wado Ryu take from shotokan?

    Only the long stances. Wado ryu is predominately still traditional, and my dojo does full contact sparring including punches to the head and throws in order to teach what wado ryu is really about, (self defense.)

    The ground techniques are great but the most knife defences... Only that with shiho nage could work if one is fast enough. The other ones assume the agressor will execute a straight attack and let his arm exactly frozen in that place.. And a nami juji gatame with a knife is a dangerous game..

  • @innerfire81

    @innerfire81

    Exactly. No attacker is going to leave his arm out that long, which makes some of these techniques useless. Many of these knife techniques look like invitations to get cut or stabbed; I've seen much better ones.

    Great video for the early '90's. Would be TRULY realistic if you had a Jeff Imada, Dan Inosanto or Marcada attack with knife fighting techniques from Philippines style with streetfighting modifications and then show the best Wado Ryu defenses. That would truly prepare a Karate student!

    Would you say that’s there’s a lot of jiujitsu style ground grappling in Wado-Ryu? How similar would you say Wado-Ryu is to Hapkido?

  • @jukkao.parviainen8669

    @jukkao.parviainen8669

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nickt3169 The most karate clubs were Shotokan, anyway in Wado-Ruy we had arm twists and use of hips to throw the locked arm opponent to canvas. In those parts Wado-Ryu was a contact , but in the training you had to discipline your hit or kick to stop just before touching the opponent. Or we did leg sweeps in very delicate way not to hurt opponent. I think in Wado-Ruy the idea is that you make everything disciplined and very quick, but to yourself when you further train it is like slo-mo movie. But it's not a pacifist martial art, you kill your opponent if you need to. Or break his arm. I am not familiar with Hapkido.

    I believe Wado ryu might be a good fighting system for empty hand fighting. But what I see here as a knife defence...dear god. This is nothing but a complete fairytale leading to fatal catastrophy if used on a street. No knife attack looks like this, attacking from one single angle slowly like a snail and attacker then waiting like a statue so one might perform some fancy technique on him. This is in total conflict with reality so why even waste time and learn something so useless and potentially fatal like this. Unbelievable, really.
