Edit: Someone also pointed out in the replies that the manga's translation is different - and actually probably more in line with what the Japanese meaning actually is. The first thought can also be translated as "we can win this", and what he actually said to Kageyama as "We WILL win this".

Also, there's no one, literally no one, who can be mean to Suga. He has than kind of aura about him. If there's any person in the whole world who could be mean to Suga-san they are definitely the worst. All of the people at Karasuno are good people, of course some are better than others (ahem Tsukki, Kageyama I'm looking at you both), but Suga is simply the best.

By the way, Suga’s intense reaction to the coach telling him to use the center more was not a reaction to the advice itself. As Takeda-san points out right afterward, it’s the fact that the coach used the words “next time” when talking to him. Basically, Suga was operating on the assumption that it was extremely unlikely that he’d get any more chances to actually play in the future since there’s such a gap between himself and Kageyama. So hearing “next time” made him realize that the coach believed he was still valuable even beyond this one-time sub in, and he got really emotional and happy that he may get more chances yet. You were still talking about what your interpretation of that moment was, so I think you missed Takeda-san’s observation.

The handwritten "go win this" was like Suga's first thought, that's why it's flashed and handwritten, to give a spontaneous feeling to it. And he stops for a sec after that, because he realized that instead of saying "Let's win this", he was subconsciously putting everything in to Kageyama, which in my opinion shows a bit of Suga's insecurity and relief

I think that the handwritten "go win this" is sugas thoughts from being on the bench. This time he contributed to the win actively. So it's not just kageyama going to take that win. But they do it together, therefore "let's win" [...] this together.

I interpreted this as kagyama growing, he never understood anyone else unless told directly, he is just starting to read and emphasise with suga, suga being very in tune with everyone around him noticed that kagyama knew what suga was going to say which threw him off balance and stoped him for a moment.

Yeah spot on. He was about to say "win it"(for us), but caught himself and changed it to "let's win this " (together) which fits in with the fighting and supporting from the bench theme. edit: To clarify, in Japanese, what appeared on the screen was 勝てよ　(ka-te-yo) which uses the 'command' form. i.e go and win. but he changed it to 勝つぞ　（ka-tsu-zo) which changes it to a strong "let's go and get it done together" phrase. i.e let's win this one together.

You know that coach really got absorbed into haikyuu when he hated when someone spoiled to him.

@@hinatas_oj not all the time for most people if their not invested in something or are a casual watcher/listener/reader... then spoilers aren't too annoying and in some cases those people seek spoilers to diffuse tensions cause they want to know the arc now but aren't committed to fully invest themselves in it. Ive done it with shows and it doesnt always mean they're bad (sometimes does) but just im not invested for whatever reason but would still like to know the outcome. But i didnt do that with haikyuu and it sucks people had to spoil others who didnt want to know.

Love this comment and I can relate. Everytime I see a notif from coaches channel I stop everything I do and watch it.

Suga's last play was poignant and symbolic. Asahi demanded the ball and promised to score to give validation that Suga is still a good setter even though Seijoh/Aoba Johsai have analyzed his attacks and he was being pitied by the entire gym. The last play was Daichi receiving, Suga setting, Asahi scoring; all the 3rd yrs. It's the last set where Suga can play in. Daichi and Asahi wants to show the entire gym that Suga is still a core member of Karasuno.

30:38 The subtitles are not getting the meaning across (though admittedly, it’s quite difficult). 勝てよ/“kate yo”, which is what Suga starts to say in the first shot and what the scribbly writing reads, is the verb form you use when giving instructions to a third party, essentially it’s like Suga is telling Kageyama “go and win” (excluding himself from this win). But 勝つぞ/“katsu zo”, which is what he actually says in the end, means “let’s win” and this form includes the speaker. When Suga puts it like this, there’s an unspoken us in his statement. Let’s win, all of us. And in this case, Suga is part of this win, part of this team that will go out and win, even though he’s been benched. Which 勝てよ doesn’t convey. 勝てよ is detached. 勝つぞ is very much involved. It’s a beautiful little touch.

Thank you for this explanation! I was worried if anyone had commented this yet, but hoping Coach can see this b/c this perfectly explains it! This was quite an emotional episode for Suga b/c he had to give up his position as the team's official setter, even though he's been on the team longer & is a senpai/3rd year. Even the audience points out "Oh wow he's the guy that got replaced by a genius first year?!" indicating it would be embarrassing/frustrating to most ppl, but Suga truly cares about the team (as he shows in his game play). He's told Coach Ukai that if putting Kageyama on the starting list would mean Karasuno had a higher chance of winning, then it would be fine. In previous episodes, Suga mentioned that he was ashamed b/c of the relief of being behind Kageyama's talent, but he also pushes himself to improve himself to also be able to play in matches. This scene shows that growth. During Kageyama's crisis, Suga proves himself on the team and helps them score points (every point matters). So when he had to leave the court, he almost reverted to saying 勝てよ/"kate yo"/"Go win", which is like a command to the listener/Kageyama (b/c b4 he could only cheer from the sidelines). However, he corrects himself to 勝つぞ/"katsu zo"/"Let's to win this", which includes himself in the equation. He's no longer belittling himself and also plans on contributing the team in the court as well. The subs did their best, but yeah, nuance can be difficult to carry over. Bless his friendship with Asahi & Daichi too b/c they also want him there 😭

The reason Suga was so “intense” in acknowledging the coach’s critique is because the coach said “NEXT TIME, use the centers more.” This meant that the coach plans on playing Suga more in the future, which Suga is of course very happy about.

4:10 This is actually an anime-only mistake. In the manga, they were shown in front of the 3-meter line. A lot of details like this get "lost in translation" when the manga is adapted into anime format.

with oikawa, the trope of a really good looking guy with a fan club is a popular thing in anime. when he was outside talking to girls that one time, it was more to show that he's popular/his personality - he actually works harder than just about anyone else in the entire cast of haikyuu, and isn't the type to slack off to talk to girls. i think the show actually wants you to see that while he acts like that really airheaded playboy, he's actually very intense and hardworking. that's one of the reasons one of the previous episodes is called "oikawa toru is not a genius" - he's not naturally gifted with nearly superhuman skill, as people say kageyama is. but he works super super super hard to make up for that and to become an unstoppable player in his own right. if anything, he works too hard; he definitely wouldn't actually skip practice or slack off or anything to talk to girls, it was more of a joke/to show that he's popular/to show his dynamic with his best friend, the one who dragged him back. you've commented a few times on it being a sign oikawa isn't a fit captain, but it was mostly a joke/actually misleading, since the point is that he acts that way, but is actually entirely different when it comes to volleyball. :) anyway thanks for the upload as always, i look forward to these all week. 😊😊

@@LiLzAaR yep. The kanji for Jōsai is 城西 where the first character is shiro for castle and the other is for west. So 青葉城西 (the second kanji is for leaf) is literally western blue-leaf castle or something like that. Interestingly, the Seijo jersey is closer to green than blue (kind of green-blue, I guess turquoise is the closest description?) because historically in China the word 青 meant closer to green than to blue (and sometimes even black), as it is now. But did the manga literally translate the school names? Instead of keeping them as Japanese proper nouns? Like.. Crow Field vs. Blue Castle? Or just a sort of translator's note in the margins, because that would be WILD

@@mocha6w68 yeah I think the Western way is pretty much what Suga did but reversed (palm up). I would say it serves two purposes, to get someone’s attention and bring them over at the same time. There are other more sneaky ways like you can even gesture just with your eyes but that’s more on a individual basis.

what the precious commenter meant by Oikawa bringing out the best in his players was not that his setting brings out the best. It was the he understands his teammates, takes his time to get to know them and directs them. He works with them, helps them get over their insecurities, builds them up when they're down, gets them back on track when they're being problematic and believes in each and every single one of them wholeheartedly, partly because he knows that that makes them want to try to be better. There was a small scene before the game started where Oikawa was setting to each of them individually for warmups that showed just how well Oikawa has his team under control. Despite being Captain and a third year, none of them were afraid to ask for adjusments to their sets. To some, Oikawa would say yes. To others he would say 'I hear you, but I know you can do better so I'm not gonna change it" and nobody would question his decision. Despite his personality, Oikawa is the best pick for team Captain and he's probably the best team Captain in all of Haikyuu.

At this point, I think Coach just doesn't like Oikawa's personality and/or during little moments of Oikawa's captainship Coach is busy processing a previous scene, so none of the scenes or comments explaining other facets of Oikawa's character would actually sink in, hahaha. Like in 9:08 Oikawa actually apologized to Iwa-chan because his game tip to Iwa-chan ended up costing them the point, but Coach was talking so I assume he didn't notice. In 25:28 when Oikawa complimented Kindaichi in his own way. Coach thought that it didn't really feel like a compliment, even if it sounded like one, because of Oikawa's gestures. And in 25:36 Oikawa encouraged his team, not even in an obnoxiously flamboyant way, telling them they've faced many other teams who functioned similarly to how Karasuno is functioning now with Suga as their setter, but Coach didn't comment on it. (It's not a particularly special moment, anyway, but he tends to brush over other moments like that with Oikawa.) I don't necessarily mean I hate that fact about his reactions, though. It happens. I still watch his reactions because it's still an expert perspective I'm interested in knowing, even if I don't agree with some of his views hahaha

Iwaizumi, Oikawa's teammate in the same years (3rd) who is more serious, is like the second captain, when oikawa do something he shouldn't do, Iwaizumi goes and stop him, it's like a symbiotic relationship where they need each other to mantain the good work, to have the the team united etc. They are both the captains and whatever one of them can't do, the other is there to take care of it

31:45 - Suga was so intense because the coach said 'next time'. Suga wanted to play again, and the coach implied that he will play again in the future. It was acknowledgement that Suga was valuable to the team.

This is exactly what you'd want from a bench player: The hunger and drive to win and the willingness to contribute despite not being a starter. Even if you're not on the court, make sure to find ways to stay as a threat against opponents and make the regulars always feel like they will be replaced as a starter anytime. That way, the whole team improves just from the pressure you exert.

Coach Donny is very harsh with oikawa, makes me wonder how he’ll react to Bokuto 🙊

Coach, when you were talking about special leadership qualities at 20:40, you described Oikawa. I thought you should know, hehe. Honestly, I don't consider myself an Oikawa stan but you make me feel so protective over him, hahah. Also, Tsukushima's lack of sarcastic response to Suga - in Japan, showing respect to your seniors is a big deal. This is why, at least within Karasuno's team, Tsukki is rarely (if ever?) sarcastic or disrespectful with the second and third years.

Damn it, now we can't see coach's natural reaction to the last ep. People that spoils things are the worst.

I'm so upset that people spoiled that it's such an amazing moment. also I love this series so much it's something I genuinely look forward to all the time this anime is with me me like volleyball and curious about it and wish I played it more in school and I incorporate a lot of the stuff you talk about into my basketball practices for my boys now this is phenomenal keep up the great work. 😃

To coach Donny. If you want to feel a little better how the players of aoba joshai are feeling then try to imagine. Do you remember when you were telling us the story about a player of yours that had a bad personality and you voted to go away? Imagine if that guy joined another team and you had to play against him in an important match. Don't forget kageyama's teemates did the same thing to him

Sp sorry about the spoilers. The ending of season 1 is a huge shake up and always surprises viewers on their first time. Luckily, this is only season one! There's still 3 seasons and even more for you to enjoy completely blind :)

@@manguy4227 I know a fair amount are just out for vengeance because _they_ got spoiled too (I asked and 1 AoT Spoiler could confirm recently), but I don't totally understand the... Oh it's like how bullies are made and act bc they get hurt and end up wanting to hurt others to make themselves feel better/satisfaction 🤔 or like "If I'm not allowed to enjoy the surprise, then no one/someone else can't!" Kind of thing Not to say they won't be called out and/or banned, but I recently got it It's a lil sad dang

So the meaning behind the "lets win this" and the loud "thank you" was because Suga realized that, as players not on powerhouse teams or expected to go pro usually leave the club after the first term of school to focus on studies and uni entrance exams, that if Karasuno loses to Seijoh he's stepping off the court for the last time as a player of Karasuno, and so when the coach confidently told him that he'd use Suga to change up to momentum in future games, it was meaningful.

What I'm about to say is touching on Oikawa's backstory and why he is so efficient as a setter (Which is partially explored in the later parts of the story), so judge whether this is a spoiler or not. The reason Oikawa is such a great player with many skills under his sleeve is because he refines all of his plays to an incredible amount; This isn't to say that other players do this, Oikawa just does it in a different way. Unlike players with incredible raw talent (Like Kageyama) that focus on sharpening and using that talent, Oikawa is a player that doesn't have a mass of raw talent so he becomes stable and learns skills with the extra tenacity and variety he has in place of amazing talent. That's why he can understand many concepts that amazingly talented players (E.g. Kageyama) don't, as they spend most of their time refining skills and pushing themselves beyond limits. This explains why he can do dumps with a great disposition, has a powerful and accurate jump serve, knows the state of the game and how to improve individual players (As well as using combinations), is so observant, can control the flow of the game and a myriad of other things. The main thing pushing him, ironically, is actually Kageyama and how he knows that his immense power will soon overtake him (He even says so many times), so he beats him in being an overall perfect player rather than being a tornado of talent. A fun way to see Oikawa as a player is like Sugawara and Kageyama combined; He definitely has skill but he shines in being reliable and observant and knows how to work with the team. (Like at 19:59 - 20:13, imagine all of those abilities combined into one player). This is why Oikawa is such a fierce player.

@@sikishkaba no he didn’t lol. He just didn’t kill him cuz he used to be his best friend. Then Sozin just let him die in his moment of need, even though he really did go to his island to save him. Roku did warn him though if he tried some shit again he’d kill him, and Sozin stayed in line until Roku was pretty much dead

Sugawara initially wanted to say 勝てよ、which is something like "go win this thing", but changed it to 勝つぞ (let's win this). The first one doesn't include the speaker, the second does. This scene is later brought up as a reference to "having pride" (in the manga, not in the anime, so you likely won't notice, but just to highlight what this is about).

When ukai says "Next time, you can use the center..." that really feels great for Suga, cause he didn't expect to really come back to court so soon again. That scene always give me chills.

The „hand signal“ of Suga is just the Japanese way of telling someone to come over. The ones in the beginning. Palm down instead of Palm up.

I'm sad that Coach Donny doesn't really get Oikawa's depth as a character. He's defining Oikawa with just that one moment he entertained his fangirls. He doesn't see how Oikawa works hard and brings out the best in his teammates.

I think it's because of his first impression of him. He saw that he was late but didn't notice that the coach (or someone else) said that he was injured. But we all know that Oikawa is in the top 3 captains in the anime.

@@kaia1818 Yeah, but still at this point in the season if you don't see how good and why he is the captain, then you missed something or are not paying attention. Which is understandable because he is doing a reaction video and not pausing when giving his reaction. He really needs to rewatch episodes after the reaction videos because he is missing alot.

The "hand signals" Suga was doing in the beginning was just him beckoning to the players to come to him. In Japan it is considered rude to beckon someone with your fingers pointed up, it's like a call-out. It's extra rude to beckon to people with one finger pointed up like we do here in the US, so people beckon to people to come to them with all their fingers pointed down, as you see suga doing.

Note to fellow commenters/lurkers: If you see any spoilers in this or any other comment section of his, report it for unwanted commercial content or spam. There was someone in the replies of a comment that spoiled the ending of the manga, and I'm sure there are many other losers thinking it's funny and spoiling it if you sort by 'new', so I recommend just checking to make sure from now on. Being spoiled is the worst, and I'm sure many others would appreciate seeing Coach's genuine reaction.

The text flashing is Suga's first thought of saying "Go win this", relying/ entrusting everything on Kageyama entirely but changed it into a collective phrase "Let's win this" since he felt like he was part of the team after being on the court as well.

Like he explain, Suga have a inferiority complex to Kageyama, thinking that he only can play if kageyama "fail", and that is not something that happen a lot, so hear the "Next time" from Ukai it was like "you are not gonna be always in the bench, you can play again", that means a lot for Suga, is a 3th year and is probably the last tournament that he can play with her friends (Asahi and Daichi are 3th year to, that play 29:23 Daichi receive, Suga set and Asahi Spike, give me chills, is like: "The Combo of the Veterans" :'D ) Pd.: Sorry for my bad english :v

Daiichi is shown as the "dad" of the team and Suga as the "mom".... The perfect marriage of two different and complementary leadership styles.

Hey! Wanted to let you know that Oikawa is an amazing captain because he knows his teammates weakness and strengths and uses that knowledge when setting to them. He can fit into any team and make everything coordinate when playing. Yes, there are times where he chats with his fangirls from time to time to appreciate them- but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t constantly thinking about upcoming games. He probably just has confidence in himself and teammates. Besides, there’s always iwazumi to help keep him in check at times like that. His team is probably used to those occasional situations and just let him be because it won’t change the way they view their captain nor the way they play. Oikawa learned that in order to win, he must make sure his team is strong enough and that’s why he uses everyone’s strength to their full potential. It’s not Karasuno vs. Oikawa, it’s Karasuno vs. Seijoh.

tsukki’s more blunt and “mean” to the other first years especially hinata and kageyama but is really polite to his senpai’s

I think it's because Hinata and Kageyama are passionate about volleyball. Remember the first episodes? How he said he hates such people to Yamaguchi when they saw Hinata and Kageyama were practicing for the three vs. three match.

I think he's mean to them because he can get away with it as well (like knocking into Hinata and saying he's so short he can't even see him). He can't do that with Tanaka or Noya even though they're also "easy targets" that are easy to troll lmao. I love Tsuki's twisted personality, imo it's why he loves middle blocking he loves seeing people mad wheeze.

I feel as if Coach Donny is putting more emphasis on the "girl fan club" which Oikawa has and his antics out of court rather the player he actually is. The hard work he puts in his game and the player he is matched only by some, which I feel is going under the radar.

tbh, apart from that one scene, Oikawa never gets distracted by his fanclub. That was the only time he talked to the girls. It goes to show that first impressions are super important. And of course how a scene is framed. Yes, there are the girl's screams whenever he's up to serve, but it's not like he pays attention to it or gazes up to the fangirls and lets himself get distracted by that. minor spoiler! . . . . . . In the later episodes featuring Oikawa, the side of him who's popular with girls is dimmed down immensely and the story focuses more on his skills and leadership rather than his popularity. We only see the three OG fangirls from the previous game and that's it.

When you were talking about the setters skill to bring everyone else to 100% that's exactly why Seijoh has so much confidence in Oikawa (kpop). That's what he excels at while also being nearly as good and well rounded as some of the best players at his level.

I'm completely okay if we never get a Premiere again. Coach Donny is a saint for wanting to be as interactive as he is, but there's always idiots in every fandom (by the way, I love that you posted their names in the video. Now we know who they are.) It's safe to assume that everyone here already knows what's going to happen, so Coach Donny doesn't need to risk it with live chats. So we can just interact here, in the comments.

The white flash of "Go win this" is implying what suga wanted to say to kageyama and the other players; which means "you guys win this" implying to go win the match without him; but then he realized mid sentence and thought that he is still in the game and that even though he got subbed out and benched again, he is still part of the team which made him say "Let's win this" not just to kageyama, nor the starting players, but to the whole team.

I also had this match spoiled. I had literally every major match spoiled, until the season 4 match, but I read the manga for that one. I still enjoyed the whole series.

I adore this series, it’s just such a different take on a show I already I adore and coach Donny is so good at commentating and being entertaining. You don’t see many youtubers like him anymore he just is himself not trying to be very in your face about it. I’m always looking forward to the next episode

I think you have a serious misconception of Oikawa on your mind Coach. He is always the one working the hardest to improve, puts his team above all else, and trusts them to win. He knows how to bring the best of anyone he plays with. Even if he was talking with the girls for a moment, they were just arriving, and he is among the most committed to the team out there

Suga, no. 2 was so happy when he got the feedback because the coach said "next time" do x thing. So it means he will get other chances :D (which he wasn't sure of before)

Oikawa is a Captain cause the Team trusts him an other way around too Oikawa knows the strenghs and weaknesess of the Team and he knows how to Deal with them actually he is pretty smart too

The reason Asahi became so assertive on the last point was because he also knew it was going to be Suga's last play so he wanted to make it count for his friend. Same with Daichi, they both were going to make sure Suga leaves on a good note and that's why you get the 3 third years connecting on the last play. Asahi calling for the ball is one of my favorite moments because although he's a very timid and quiet guy, he takes his friends very seriously.

I love the way how the coach says "Let's get this haikyuu party started" in every ep.

Suga was going to say "go and win this" like he wasn't a part of that, but he said instead "let's win this"

"yeah just set to Asahi- oh they changed the ball again!" I swear I had to look back again for like three times😂

Sugawara is my favorite character in Haikyuu because of his positiveness and kind heart.

Oikawa deserves to be captain!!!! I swear, without getting into minor spoilers he works harder than anyone else and has the respect of his teamates. They put some of those things in the beginning to paint him as more of a villain.

19:34 aw coach didn't see Hinata’s warmup before the set

The reason why the text showed up was because Suga almost said "Go win this" like he wasn't apart of the team and he didn't contribute. He caught himself before he said it and said "let's win this" instead

In the final point before Suga got subbed out with Kageyama, it was pretty meaningful how his final point before he left was done by the third years - Daichi receives, Suga sets, and Asahi spiked it through. Even though he's the only third year that doesn't have a regular position like Daichi and Asahi, they're know that they can always rely on Suga and are always working together and supporting him.

In the entire show i never noticed the ball changing mid animation, so i was very surprised when coach noticed it multiple times on his first watchthrough

The sentence “go win this” in Japanese means “you(guys) win it” which excludes himself, so he changed it to “we will win it” which includes himself as a team member

Many people call Sugawara as the "useless character" which I greatly disapproved. They must've skip these golden scenes of Sugawara uplifting the Karasuno Volleyball Team. SUGA IS THE BEST MAMA!!!

You’re gonna love the new opening next season. All the next openings are amazing.

You know, I really appreciate how you show the entire episode even though it's not normal for reactors to do that. They often cut through the episode until just 5 minutes of a 20 minute episode is shown in the video.

Coach you gatta remember I'm middle school kageyama practically begged for advice from his senpai oikawa but was always rejected. Having suga freely give him advice is refreshing for him

COACH DONNY IS PREDICTING SO MUCH OF THE SERIES?!!?!?

Hey Coach I noticed the comment you responded to at the beginning of the video said that the Seijoh coach made Oikawa captain but he was voted captain by his teammates because they thought that he could bring out the best in them kind of like that Brazilian player you mentioned. Yeah Oikawa has an ego and puts on a front but the other Seijoh third years know not to take him seriously when he’s like that and keep him in check.

It seems like coach is so caught in the idea that Oikawa pays more attention to the girls than his own teammate and doesn't appreciate the little details why HE IS the captain. I hope in the next episodes he'll appreciate Oikawa as a captain more.

I know right lol like it was ONE scene and the games hadn’t even started yet then and at no other point in the story does Oikawa ever get distracted by his fangirls. Such a big deal over a small thing. But i’m still curious how he’ll react to later episodes.

@@fenay I get what you mean, but if this were real life and my captain were off chatting with boys instead of leading and participating in warm-ups, I'd be pretty mad and my coach would've been really angry about it and would probably bench that person. So while it is one scene, Coach Donny's perspective is a fair one; captains must be on-time, even early, to warm-ups and practices. It doesn't just look bad on them, but also on the team. I do think Oikawa is a good captain, but there are elements of his personality that aren't ideal, for sure, and that scene is one that I also don't like. When you say that Coach is "so caught in the idea...," you diminish his expertise and understanding about a team-centered mindset.

@@kunterborn1 my only thing is should he really be branded a bad captain or a bad choice for a captain just because of that scene? Cos that’s essentially what coach donny is saying. You yourself said he’s a good captain and this is just one aspect of his personality that you don’t like. No one is saying he was right to entertain his fan girls that one time but to dismiss all his other good qualities as a leader for it is what i don’t get.

About that white flash scene, Suga meant to tell Kageyama "Now YOU go out there and win", but then held back and corrected himself to say "Now, LET'S win this". It's Suga acknowledging that by switching Kageyama on court, winning would not just be a result of switching in a more skilled individual. Instead, victory would be a result collective effort earned by everyone on the team.

19:00 it's good that Coach didn't notice Kageyama's expression😂😂😂 it was actually Tanaka hit Kageyama at the back of his head.

Not only do you discuss the technical aspects of volleyball and art, but you also shower your audience with numerous insights on how to be a better player, and consequently, a better person. I was drawn to your videos because it's Haikyuu, but I stayed because I genuinely love your perspective in things.
