Tsukishima does not like to speak clearly, his type of humor and his personality in general do not allow him to be frank with others. Which doesn't mean he doesn't care about others. Typically here, Ennoshita comes in and Tsukki tells him "So it's you" (as a replacement of the captain). He doesn't look surprised, and what he means is, "It's quite normal that you are the replacement." Which is rather a sign of recognition of Ennoshita's ability. The same with Yamaguchi, he told him "it is not the same as against Aoba Josai, here, it is we who are in lead". In reality, he simply makes him understand that Yamaguchi should not be afraid to serve, because they will not lose the set if he misses, on the contrary. There will only be a bonus of points if he succeeds, and if he fails, it will just take them one more point to win the set. Yamaguchi is his best friend, so he's more used to understand these phrases quickly, and that's why he smiles after hearing it.

Just on Okiawa’s last comment He basically said although Daichi isn’t a flashy receiver, who draws in all your attention, he always got the ball up for the team And if suddenly he’s not there and the ball isn’t always going up anymore, points that would’ve been saved are now being lost, and that will slowly add more pressure for everyone (especially Ennoshita) And that pressure is being reflected in the scores

I love how everything is foreshadowed by Tanaka saying how Ennoshita would be able to relate to players that he cannot. Then this exact thing happens in this show. Love how Furudate always tries to get the point home by saying it over and over in different ways by different people. Yamaguchi crying when Ennoshita says "he knows" is just so telling. A little empathy and the feelings just come.

Little known fact: The sister of Wakunan's captain is a main character of Haikyuu author Haruichi Furudate's previous manga. It isn't a volleyball focused manga, but the family and her volleyball player brother, show up in it, so it's a neat little detail that they are presented as a very humble and likable team, because they are characters close to the author's heart.

I just love how everyone just knew and wasn’t surprised that it was gonna be Ennoshita who’s gonna sub in like how Tsukki said that “it IS Ennoshita”. It just shows that even though Ennoshita might not see it for himself, but everyone in the team knows he has the potential. Btw Coach Tsukki wasn’t trying to be snarky that time when Ennoshita subbed in. Tsukki said something before about how the chaotic people annoy him that’s why I feel like he shows more respect and isn’t snarky towards his senpais who aren’t chaotic like Noya and Tanaka.

I completely agree. When I first watched this episode, I was like, "Whos gonna replace Daichi, is it gonna be Ennoshita?" and thats right when he came on screen. Furudate slowly built up Ennoshitas leadership role in the background, to where when the question came up on who would replace daichis spot, he was the natural answer.

I think Tsukishima’s kindness towards Yamaguchi is just subtle but Yamaguchi can tell. He says “Its not like last time (Seijoh vs. Karasuno, where the score was with Seijoh in the lead).” He’s basically telling Yamaguchi its okay if he messes up because they’re in the lead, and its okay to fight- which is why when Yamaguchi makes his choice to play it safe, we see Tsukishima react in surprise. Tsukishima in general is a great friend to Yamaguchi! Its always subtle, but whenever Yamaguchi is panicking before a game we see Tsukishima worrying or telling him to go to the bathroom (and in the same breath make fun of Hinata lmao). When Tsukishima is talking to Yamaguchi, his comfort is basically just facts! And Yamaguchi catches that and it helps him relax (like we see in this episode- What Tsukki says comforts him (“like Tsukki said, we’re in the lead”) its just his own mind fights against him) But Yamaguchi’s easily my favorite character, because he’s so relatable- he isn’t Hinata, he doesn’t have that thirst Hinata has, but he loves the game and despite being /scared/, he doesn’t want to give up. And its interesting how this episode compares Daichi, Ennoshita, and Yamaguchi. We have our foundation (Daichi), our reformed run away (Ennoshita), and our coward who still needs to get his chance (Yamaguchi). And they’re all the more level headed people within their age group lmao (Suga is chaotic when he wants to be and Asahi is a scaredy cat so Daichi wins the Captain prize haha)

to add another subtle detail, Tsukishima didn't call Yamaguchi out for being a hypocrite (the whole pride speech was about Tsukki being too scared to try hard, and that's exactly what Yamaguchi just did with his standing float). ***Manga Spoiler*** When you look back the Johzenji-Wakutani-Seijoh Arc is actually the Karasuno Captain Arc too (Johzenji-Daichi, Wakutani-Ennoshita, Seijoh-Yamaguchi). And especially in this match Ennoshita took Yamaguchi under his wings, Daichi recognized and passed the baton to Ennoshita, as well as Kurokawa guided Daichi how to handle and communicate with teammates as a leader (in the backstory). I wouldn't be surprised if Furudate do it on purpose. (And I love most of the people in the fandom agreed that Yamaguchi will be the captain even before the Final Arc came out lmao.)

Tsukki's way of thinking always prioritizes logic over emotions, so when he tells Yamaguchi "this isn't like last time when we were behind" it's his way of acknowledging Yamaguchi is nervous and trying to calm him down - by "out logic-ing" Yamaguchi's nervousness/emotions. From an outside perspective it definitely sounds like Tsukki is saying "why are you so scared when this isn't a big deal?" (which is why Tanaka reacts like 'huh?') but since Yamaguchi knows Tsukki's way of thinking so well, he interprets it probably more they way Tsukki meant it, which is "you aren't going to mess up the same way you did before, this is a different situation, try not to be nervous and you'll be fine."

Hi coach, a clarification, for Ennoshita, he, Narita & Kinoshita the three of them actually stopped going to volleyball practice altogether. They stopped going for quite a while, and by the time they wanted to come back, Coach Ukai had already been hospitalized. Ennoshita disliked the tough training regimes from Coach Ukai but by the time he had learned to appreciate just how hard Coach Ukai made the team work and he realized just how much he liked volleyball, it was too late. In the manga, the three of them (Ennoshita, Narita & Kinoshita) actually call themselves "The Ungrateful Second Years" because of this.

31:30 Oikawa recognized the difference between Ennoshita and Sawamura's abilities. Remember, coach, there's a reason why even Ennoshita mentions that his technique is lacking. He's a second year and a sub player. There's just a big gap between them when it comes to experience. Sawamura is a very solid defensive specialist and an all-arounder opposite to the point where he can be reliably used as an attacker as well. Ennoshita, on the other hand, is not used to the right side, but they don't show this in the story at all. That, and, his receives are a lot shakier in comparison.

About what Oikawa's last comment said: Daichi has consistently been one of the team's best receivers (second best just behind Nishinoya) and the team has relied on him heavily for their overall defense. Now that Daichi's out of the game, a lot of the digs and receives that he used to be handle for them (since the rest of the team still doesn't have the best receives), nobody is able to get them up anymore and that's contributing to the increasing overall pressure not only for Ennoshita himself but on the overall team.

31:30 He is essentially saying that even though Ennoshita is doing the best he can, it still isn't the same as having Daichi. If certain receives that Daichi would normally get are not going up, then they will start to feel the pressure build. The scoreboard showed that they were down 18-14 in the second set when he said that, and you can see from Ennoshita's face that he was definitely starting to feel the pressure.

Tsukishima's choice of words for both Ennoshita & Yamaguchi was encouraging, because in both cases he treats their sub-in as something that is expected, something they deserve. Ennoshita's reddened forearms have a greater importance as they connect the whole story. He skipped practice because it was hard on him and he choose taking the easy way out. But he remembers the feeling of the hard practice paying off when he manages to dig the ball in his flashback and misses that feeling terribly, eventually making him decide to come back to the club. Ennoshita makes his choice right then and there : he was not going to run away from the difficult stuff because the moments when his hard work pays off are important to him, so he has to embrace it instead of running away if he wanted similar experiences. And then we cut back to the match where his arms are once again, red from a good play just like in his flashback. Ennoshita persevered through the immense pressure, he embraced it just like he embraced difficult practice to experience the thrill of his hard work paying off again.

I really like their friendship actually. During the summer, Yamaguchi asked Hinata what he would say to Tsukki and Hinata replied that he doesn't know Tsukki well so there's nth he can say. And now when Yamaguchi is down, Hinata go and ask Tsukki to say sth, but as we all know, Tsukki really not that kind of guy who is encouraging, he is the provoking one. I think the fact that Tsukki didn't call Yamaguchi out for being hypocritical was really telling by itself. Yamaguchi already knew where he went wrong & Tsukki didn't rub it in at all, he just silently supported him & knew his friend would be able to get it together on his own.

Actually, the whole phrase "Ennnoshita no chikara-mochi" equates to "unsung hero". The "en” in Ennoshita refers to the flooring added to the edges of some 1st floors in traditional Japanese houses & "shita" means underneath.

I really appreciate Takeda Sensei's wisdom. He knows exactly what to say to them to support them emotionally (like the mom figure that he is, you could say). He may not know a lot about technical, but he knows how to encourage, calm them down, and how to point out what they lack a number of times now. Kind of like a reality check. and MANGA SPOILER: I love how he calmed down and helped Hinata when he had to leave in the peak of a match because of fever during nationals. He was needed a lot but Takeda Sensei was firm with his words and the decision to take Hinata out and prioritize health over winning.

This episode is just “Haikyuu character writing being among some of the best, exhibit #6138”. Love all the seed planting from the earlier episodes (including the Jouzenji bit in the beginning, such a great start), as well as superb flashback transitions! Also, Haikyuu!'s rewatch value is absolutely insane. You should definitely rewatch it eventually (if you feel like it, of course) without having to film yourself at the same time! Or maybe even read the manga, as there's still a bunch of stuff that doesn't make it to the anime, and it is a very engaging story. Everything you've mentioned about concussion catching up to you later on was actually in the manga; Oikawa was saying the exact same things. Oikawa's words in the end mean that while Daichi's receives aren't as flashy as Noya's, they make up for the majority of Karasuno's defense, so now that that defense isn't there, it's really getting to Karasuno, and we can see that they're losing to Wakunan in the second set.

To answer your question about Ennoshita's return, he dosent return to practice for an indefinite period of time, so he definitely dosent return the same day or the next day. We can assume its for 3 practices at least. Also kinoshita and narita, the second years who are not regulars like ennoshita, were the two other first years (at the time, since now they r second years) who skipped practice like ennoshita and came back the same time as ennoshita did (probably wanted to come back for the same reasons as ennoshita did).

10:49 tsukki was not being snarky here. he just straight up expected that it was ennoshita who's going to replace daichi. the italicized "is" is like an emphasis, or like an expectation being realized (haha idk how to put that into a more sensible phrase but i hope you get it coach :) ) and as you can see, each of the members are either asking what to do or counting on him because they trust him as much as they do to daichi. because other than daichi, ennoshita can control or manage the freaks (noya and tanaka). he even got kageyama's and tsukki's trust in his leadership. like in 12:26 where "his influence has spread to the first years", there was a scene where tsukki because ennoshita gave him a comment before that was so spot on. that's why i'm really proud of this boy. he really stood out whenever needed

Your videos were a lifesaver, both in terms of learning volleyball fundamentals, and in terms of having something to look forward to during a difficult time. I still have a lot to learn (rotations/positional responsibilities are confusing, and the game is so quick!) but everyone there was surprised it was my first game, because I'd practiced passing and serving so much, based on your videos. Oikawa means that by not having Daichi around from the start of the set, and instead having Ennoshita who is still green and not as experienced or skilled as Daichi, slowly but surely they will get strangled because by not having these consistent "boring" digs, the flashy, explosive parts of Karasuno (Kageyama, Hinata, Asahi, Tanaka) can't do their job. That shows up on the scoreboard where it's the middle of the set and Karasuno is already down 4 points.

Running away, being weak, feeling stressed: seeing characters with that natural drive is awesome, but there's something powerful about seeing characters without that and how to try dealing with these weaknesses. What tanaka points out when they were discussing the next captain is that since Ennoshita left the team once he understands and empathizes with both the "let's just dive ahead" type of players like hinata, kageyama or tanaka, and the guys who are a little bit in the shadows like yamaguchi. in fact when yamaguchi gets scared and serves weak Ennoshita is the first one to understand how it feels like so tanaka thinks he could be a great leader for that team. because daichi is a great leader but at the end of the day he's nice but he himself can't really empathize with guys who get scared like asahi or yamaguchi and doesn't really know how it feels to be like that, he can only be supportive, as instead ennoshita can actually give advice on that. example is when yamaguchi is coming in, ennoshita is the one who knows how to calm him but saying it's normal to feel under pressure, while guys like tanaka or hinata wouldn't really get the feeling

  • @psixi2668

_Just to clarify, because I've seen some other comments but I'm not rlly sure if it's coming across all too well:_ when Tsukki says, "This isn't like last time with Aoba Josai, we're in the lead now," that's actually comforting. He's pretty much saying, "Because we're in the lead right now, it's ok if you mess up, since, even if you fail, it won't cost us the match. This is just an opportunity, and there's no bad consequences. So there's no reason to be stressed." He is just taking the pressure off of Yamaguchi by reminding him that in this situation, they have nothing to lose and everything to win, and it's different from the last time with Aoba Josai, where they had everything to lose and Yamaguchi ended up being crushed by that pressure. Wanted to point that out just because it's a another subtle moment showing Tsukki's caring side and how he's just a character where you _really_ need to pay attention to his actual words/actions and not the tone of voice/delivery, so it'd be a shame Coach ended up missing it :)
