My favorite detail in this episode was when Ennoshita mentioned his plan to the team and Asahi said "Yeah, let's give a shot" without hesitation. It really displays the type of culture that Karasuno has when their best hitter is willing to listen to a bench player.

Ennoshita's line in the bathroom is a bit rough to understand, and the translation doesn't help. The actual Japanese is 安心してんじゃねぇよ. "anshin shiten janee yo" Word-for-word, yes, it means "don't relax," but basically, he's mad at himself because he finally got to stand on the court, and yet after the match his strongest emotion is "thank god it's all over." He's relieved to be out of that atmosphere where he was so nervous, but he wants to become the type of person who thrives in that, not always wanting to run away.

Ennoshita and Hinata's lines at 24:07 ("A good jump starts from....?" "A good approach!") didn't get much notice here but if I had to choose a line to succinctly encapsulate one of the major themes of Haikyuu as a whole, it's probably this. The idea that in order to be able to succeed at a high level, you must first lay a good foundation and do things in the proper order becomes so important as the series goes on and I feel like this line from Ennoshita is one of the earliest declaration of this concept from the manga author. Thank you for the video, hearing your fresh insight for a series I watched so often is really interesting!

I love Ennoshita being captain, I love the fact that he's a bench player, not the strongest nor most confident but his team respects him greatly, sees how much he loves the sport, and sees his worth. I love how Wakunan's coach says: "I guess we really don't have an advantage with Karasuno's captain missing". I've always hated the way amines give off this vibe that only the starters of a team are any good with the exception of an occasional bench player who can make an impact. It doesn't do real life sports justice when it shows only the starters doing well while everyone who comes off the bench just sucks(KNB is a perfect example of this). Haikyuu makes it so that bench players have a chance to shine and that's one of the many reasons that I love this anime.

Another Japanese superstition is of someone being "To dumb to catch a cold" So when the Karasuno people were talking about Nekoma for example everyone was sneezing except Taketora (the Tanaka analog.) I think the whole thing with Bokuto is similar, he is referred to as simple minded so instead of sneezing he gets fired up.

The whole “bathroom moments” thing kinda has some reason in it when put in the context of Japanese culture. Japan is a very crowded country - everywhere you go there are crowds and a lot of people, so your whole life is basically spent with other people. The only time a person is really alone (and lets themselves be who they really are) - is in the bathroom. Some people even say that’s why the bidet was invented, so that alone time will be a bit nicer :)

Hey super good video as always ! I just wanted to point out you often congratulate the animators when you notice subtle details in Haikyuu ! And they are certainly very good at what they aredoing, but you have to remenber haikyuu is a manga adaptation ! Furudate was a volleyball player, and he is a very skilled illustrator when it comes to action fluidity and dynamism. Most of the time, you can already feel as if the action is freely flowing before you just by reading the manga, hence why Haikyuu is also a very good sports anime too, the base material is just that good at depicting action (and more specifically volleyball action) If you want i can make a selection of important chapters you can read to understand what im saying !

I’m not sure if anybody has ever mentioned this, but i love how the imagery for the captains in Karasuno is that of grounded foundation. Daichi’s name (大地) literally translate to “solid earth” Meanwhile Enoshita (縁下) generally refers to the wooden foundations of a Japanese traditional house’s veranda. You might want to google image search 縁の下 if you’re curious. Anyway, this match is one of my fave, and enoshita is my fave Karasuno, i love that we get to celebrate a generally mellow, but determined person.

If you notice Coach in around 16:26 about Ennoshita's reaction when Nishinoya complimented him saying "Nice receive", it was a big thing/deal because as you can see, Nishinoya's compliments can cheer people up and having him say "Nice receive" to Ennoshita even though Ennoshita still feels like that last receive is crappy, it made him so happy to be complimented by their team's libero and thus made him feel good about himself. We all need a libero like Nishinoya :D
