voidstar's Commander X16 Developer Board celebration kickoff 2023 (warning: spoilers)

Ғылым және технология

Deepest respect to the direct hardware and software contributors to this project, to seeing it through and Creating Something that now the rest of us can enjoy and build upon! This is absolutely a Passion Project and has involved extreme amounts of talent, combined with patience and determination.
This is just my own "celebration video" of this moment, but I hope this also gives other folks insight to the potential here to just have a bit of fun again on some real hardware. No ads, no login. Just turn it on and get back to First Principles of computing!
My notes about the X16 are located here:

Loving the sound chip on this computer.

There are a few other included software titles not in this presentation - a racing game (RALLY), another adventure game (PIXEUS), Flappy, X16 Maze, Tetrads and the great Attack of PETSCII Robots! Great to have REAL responsive controls!

Nice nice nice to see my Mirror's Edge music demo on real hardware. It needs better bass speakers though :)

Yeah, I just grabbed the nearest speakers I had available. Waiting for the case, then can do a proper audio setup. Did notice, the text in MEDEMO kind of "walk" rather than glide (if that makes sense).

@@voidstar1337 likely because of the low resolution screen mode, not many pixel positions to use

Hehe, Russell Watson. Apart from games, I'd like to see developers use the x16 for external experimental scientific/measuring applications, such as for robotics & multiple I/O lines.

On it! Got a UserPort adapter in the works, should be able to read a GPS and control my telescope - and terminal over to BBS's, of course!

@@voidstar1337 ... Nice. In the early 1990's, I did some data acquisition experiments with a circuit design I made, plugged to the parallel port of my 286. The point of doing all of this is to make other people realize that these new 8-bit computers are not just for gaming. I am hoping someone will also make office apps for them, like at least a simple word processor & spreadsheet, & then able to print to a printer, whether it's an impact (dotmatrix), laser or inkjet printer. And so forth & so on. The same should be said of the Foenix retro PC & not just for the X16.

I do have the included keyboard (with the actual key caps, not stickers). But in this video, I am actually using my own because I was testing a variety of PS/2 keyboards to see if they work -- and they all do! I haven't yet come across a PS/2 keyboard that doesn't work on the X16 (tried about 9 different brands of them). (the one I used in this video is the same brand as the one that is included - Perixx)

The screen is not on focus. Maybe it will be better if you capture the video

Make sure in the "Quality" gear of the video, set to 1080HD if possible (sometimes it will dial lower if it detects a saturated or slow bandwidth) - but still, you're right, in the text/console portions in particular a lens filter would have helped to keep things a bit less "glow-ballooned". In a proper training session in the future, I'd capture the direct video signal in-line - but this one was a celebration of the hardware, so I had to show at least a portion of the hardware itself :) We're learning lots and hopefully a bunch of other cool stuff will be available when the next batch of production happens. So far no one has reported any catastrophic hardware glitch, smooth sailing!
