    Hey everyone! A few additions/corrections: Apparently, Doki Doki Panic started as a tech demo of a vertically scrolling Mario game. So Mario and Doki Doki Panic have an even bigger connection than I mentioned! There's no footage of this prototype to my knowledge, so it's hard to say how different it was compared to Doki Doki Panic. Also, I should've used footage from the original GBA release of Super Mario Advance and not the Nintendo Switch Online version. Thanks for watching! ...And let me know of any other fixes I should make :)

    It helps to know this. As without this info, it makes seeing characters like Birdo or Shy Guy in Mario nowadays a little weirder when you know they came from an entirely different game at first. Besides, it explains why the owners of DDP wouldn’t just own the rights to Birdo or what not since it’s a licensed game. Aside from a different deal that could’ve existed if this always was DDP originally in another timeline.

    @@silveramyknux241 Converting ddp into a mario game also helped the game be far more successful then it ever could be because the ddp characters would most likely never be used again after the festival ended as ddp was basically a promotional game for the festival and nintendo would most likely have otherwise skiped a localization in its original form due to losing the license to the mascots after thier sponsorship deal for the festival ended as there are tons of promotional material and festival merchandise showing mario and the ddp mascots together(plus the game didn't really sell that amazingly well in its initial release. Even in japan more people likely played the mario usa version over ddp). Retooling the game helped it reach far more players then it ever could as doki doki panic.

    Yes but it eventually got a ALL stars SNES game where Super Mario Bros the real SMB 2 (called the lost levels) + the Doki Doki Panic game but the one with Mario) and Super Mario Bros 3 all on 1 SNES cartridge and yes Lost levels/ the real Mario Bros 2 is really BRUTAL that's why the NES game in Japan got replaced by Doki Doki Panic but with Mario Luigi Toad and Peach as party members for the USA NES Super mario bros 2 game.

    Afraid you got some misinformation there. American Super Mario Bros 2, is a reskin of Doki Doki Panic, when this game originally started development, it was a vertical Super Mario Bros (which is why there are so many vertical areas), but they ran into some difficulties and d with the pressure to get a sequel out as soon as possible, they had to shelve this version and work a rom-hack of the original game. That is why the game is so difficult. It was quick and easy. The original game was revived when nippon requested the game for its event.

    Also with Lost Levels, what happened there was basically just the Mario team were experimenting with the VS. system (basically an arcade version of Famicom hardware or something) where they had a lot more space to just create a bunch of new levels for Mario 1 that they didn't have space for before, and so they just started having fun making levels for themselves that were much harder than the released game in order to match their own skills (because they were quite good at Mario given they made the game lol). And they found the harder levels they made for themselves fun enough for them to play that they decided "why not release this so other super skilled Mario players can have fun too?" and so they did and that's what Lost Levels basically is. Miyamoto detailed all this in an interview a WHILE back, it's somewhere on Nintendo's website I think. So Lost Levels is basically just a big DLC expansion for "super players" but released as a separate game because, well, DLC wasn't really a thing yet, it wasn't from the start a "Let's make THE sequel to Mario" kind of game or anything. And honestly I'd say the devs weren't wrong, Lost Levels is really fun once you're a super master of Mario 1 (and specifically Mario 1, not later Mario games) in my opinion, after I got really good at Mario 1 overtime I've now grown to love Lost Levels and have a ton of fun with it. It's just that like 95% of Mario players don't fit into that demographic the game is targeting so it ends up seeming way less appealing to most Mario fans.

    The one thing you don't know about Super Mario Advance is that the footage that you've shown is from Nintendo Switch Online, which gives most GBA games darker, less saturated colors, meant to mimic the GBA's dim screen. If you play it on a PC emulator, GB Player or backlit GBA SP/DS Lite, it'd look much brighter than NSO. NSO is trying to mimic what it would have looked like on the dim GBA screen

Although I get the feeling being that it was 1987 it probably didn't control that well did it?😂

    I will agree SMB2(J) was an eye-opener. When I realized I was only going to get through that one leaf-blowing level by doing leaps of faith and accepting that the coders put the spring platforms perfectly the right number of spaces apart, I stopped playing for awhile, had a chuckle and a prolonged spine-tingling meditation on it, and proceeded. I actually qualified for the "NO WARPS!" patch the same month we (in the U.S.A.) finally saw the game on the SNES combo cart (that same night.) It's not that hard of a game, it's just a paradigm-shift from the original and from many other games at the time. This narrator way, way, way overexaggerates the difficulty.

  • @legoboy7107

    @legoboy7107

    16 күн бұрын

    I wouldn't even say it's a paradigm shift from the original (later Mario games though, yes), it's basically just the harder half of the same game for the super skilled players who mastered the main game. But it continues the exact same core design philosophies as Mario 1, just now with the expectation that the player already knows how everything works and has mastered it all and so it doesn't have to teach anything to new players like Mario 1 did, it's like "You know and are good at everything we've taught you before, now here's the REAL challenge for you to throw all your skills and knowledge at." If you don't meet that level yet though then the game's gonna be rough, but that also means it's not for you yet. And yeah, it's really not THAT hard, people describe it as the "hardest, most unfair game to ever exist" when that's really not true at all. At the end of the day, it's still just Mario 1, but Mario 1 for people who have already fully mastered Mario 1 (and likewise that's what the bonus worlds A-D are to the main game of Lost Levels). Also here's a tip for that leaf-blowing springs level, it's not actually a leap of faith if you know the strategy: You can always tell where Mario is and thus aim him under these circumstances, a. if the screen is scrolling full-speed then Mario's in the middle of the screen, and b. if you're holding left and the screen isn't scrolling, then Mario's all the way on the leftmost side of the screen. If you know this thing about how the scrolling works and can take advantage of it to know where Mario is, then 7-3 is no problem and you can always aim your landing on the platforms easily, no blind faith required. It's an example of what I described where the game expects you to already know everything of how things work, even stuff like the mechanics of the camera/scrolling. Hope that helps!
