You're comment "It Ain't Me" made me think of a terrific video done by VoicePlay and John Pinto Jr. of the same name as your comment. Oh yeah, Eli's name rhymes with jelly. The Beach Boy that wrote this song suffered from agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) and felt safe in his room. VoicePlay has a whole series of ACA Top Ten songs that really are done with them sitting in front of mikes and singing. You'd probably enjoy them - they cover Movie Themes, Sitcoms, Comics, Video Games (including Pong), Disney Heroes/Villains/Sidekicks, Broadway, and many more. None of them are the big, lush full staging, but if you want to know what they sound like just sitting and singing you will enjoy them.

Deejay definitely has skills. He wouldn’t be a swing for five rolls in the touring company of Hamilton if he didn’t. (Rolls include Arron Burr and the lead, Hamilton.) As much as I love this one, my favorite with Deejay is still Bang. J None was still with the group then and arranged a three part riff near the end that’s just crazy! You might want to check that one out.

One of the most impressive riffs ever was the triple riff in Bang. Might be a good one to check out.

They do record their parts before the video is made, but they sing during the recording. Most of the time that is. They did a Wicked Medley with Rachel Potter. She did her recording and then developed laryngitis. She could not speak above a whisper, let alone sing, on the day of the recording. Voiceplayers are an enthusiastic fanbase, we will always be here for Voiceplay and Geoff. May I suggest that you react to and/or analyze their cover of I Can't Make You Love Me.

I was just going to say I’m pretty sure they sing when they’re doing the video. These guys can act, but there’s too much going on in their mouths and throats that wouldn’t happen if they’re just lip syncing. What’s interesting after you’ve watched the videos a few times is you’ll catch where someone in the background IS NOT in sync with what they would be singing. So I’m guessing they not only record a few variations but then sing them when doing the video as well, and they splice things together based on what the soloist at the moment is doing. It would be very cool to watch the process, start to finish.

Geoff very rarely uses head voice while singing with VoicePlay, only a few songs come to mind. Most of the time when he goes high there, he uses a mixed belt for that. But he uses it all the time in his solo videos, if you want a good example of Geoff using most of his range and a lot of tenor vocals, I recommend Geoff's High and Dry.

I agree with you completely and he does so for good reason, they have enough parts singing the higher ranges and his role is to hold down the main baseline and occasionally the beat. I will go and check out high and dry and one or two others. I find it interesting that some men cannot access their head/falsetto range and when it comes to Geoff would like to know what his full range is 🤔

@@Wildecat10 Oh yeah, since he hits the “0”s. Not sure if it’s a full 5 octaves though. A trained voice. I really how he’s continued to develop his bass range to go lower while keeping his high range as well. Daily directed practice is a must to improve.

I’d recommend “Hoist The Colors” just for Geoff’s range. There’s an upward slide he does after the bridge that most people miss because the camera moves off him and they figure it’s Eli on the back half of the slide. It’s not. It’s Geoff.

A fellow Kiwi! Hello!! It's good to see a NZ reactor channel. I absolutely love VoicePlay and Geoff. I've been a fan of theirs for several years now. As mentioned below/above, while the music is produced separate to the videos, they sing along to the music on set to get not only the lip-syncing and mouth/tongue placement correct, but to help with getting the emotion needed across as well - the "Nothing Else Matters" cover as case and point. If they were just lip-syncing to that and not actually singing along, I don't think you would have got all the emotion they put into it. If you ever see any of their behind the scenes videos (most of which are on Patreon but I think there is something on the channel from years back) you can see how much they sing along. I do adore their Disney medleys (especially since I have a 5yo daughter), but I really loved this song. I know some others mentioned it in your last VoicePlay video, but I'd also really love to see you react to "High and Dry" from Geoff - you see his head voice, chest, mixed, sub-harmonics, and what I call his rumbly whisper. It's one of his first solo videos, and it doesn't have all the "Geoff clones", and accompanying layers, but that makes it all the more amazing.

Love your reactions. I know it's counterintuitive, but Eli's name is short for Eliezer, not Elijah, and he pronounces it like it rhymes with jelly. Yes, it is prerecorded, but they generally do sing along with the track as they are recording, so their mouth positions would usually mirror what they were when they recorded the track. (An occasional exception to this rule is Layne, there are times he has done some kind of really other-worldly kind of sound or beatboxing, and he has said that what his mouth is doing in the video isn't really representing what he does in real life to create the sound, but it involves making such a funny or strange-looking manipulation of his mouth/expression that he doesn't do it for the video, LOL).

Oh thank you! I'll refer to him correctly from now on, apologies to him. Yeah that's why I thought I'd mention the tounge shape that Eli had when mixing, it's vital to avoid any unesseccary tension. 👏 It's difficult for Layne, especially if he has layered parts, he has to chose one to mimic. If you're interested in the voice science side of beatboxing and want to see what happens inside our vocal tract I've put up another video showing this. 😊

Great reaction. By the way. Eli is pronounced Ellee it elie. Its short for Eleizer. This they are referring to the room in they each have to create the videos in. All the items in the room relate to each person, Voiceplay in whole, the era the song came out or The Beach Boys. I'm on their patreon so got to watch the behind the scenes video where Layne gave us a tour of the room and told us about each item.
