VoicePlay are known as the Theatre Kids of a cappella. Unlike Pentatonix and Home Free (the other 2 of the 'big three' a cappella groups), VoicePlay is 100% independent and unsigned, and is able to be extremely flexible in their music choices. They don't stick to any particular genre, and have covered Disney tunes (like this one) just as easily as they have tackled rock classics like Dream On, Broadway standards (Wicked medley, If I Were A Rich Man/Girl), incidental classical music (In the Hall of the Mountain King), pop songs from all decades (Boybands in 5 Minutes, Man In the Mirror, We're Good), video game music (Halo theme, The Dragonborn Comes) and beyond. Whatever inspires them, they're open to tackling, and I haven't yet seen them miss. Everything you see and hear, they have more or less done themselves. Layne (the beatboxer) and Geoff (the bass) take turns creating the vocal arrangements, and whoever does the arrangement is also in charge of the video shoot (concept, direction, filming, editing). Eli (short for Eliezer, the bald tenor) does their lighting work, and Layne is also the co-owner of a video production studio (along with former VoicePlay baritone, Tony Wakim) where they shoot a lot of their videos. Even without label backing, VoicePlay's video quality tend to be just about the best out there in terms of conception and production. These guys always go all-out, and they just keep getting better.

@@VetMedCorner For a great showcase of Geoff's bass voice, I'd suggest Voiceplay's "Oogie Boogie's Song", from _The Nightmare Before Christmas_ - and for an example of the ridiculous, look for their rendition of "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" by Edvard Greig. Layne (their beatboxer) does most if not all of the arranging, and I think he's not given near enough credit for his chops in this regard.

There have been changes in the lineup over the years. The current members are Geoff (jeff) Castellucci (Powerhouse bass...human subwoofer, with 5 octave range and amazing hair) Eli (Elly) Jacobsen ..Little bald rockstar tenor who could sing circles around any rock singer... Cesar De La Rosa ..Sassy baritone/tenor with the voice of an angel and all the mischief... and Layne Stein, Vocal Percussion voodoo master with a beautiful singing voice when you get to hear it! Layne and Geoff split the arranging about 50/50 and Eli does most of the lighting etc. The 5th member is always a guest at the moment. Previously there was Earl Elkins who left a couple of years ago. He has a brilliant super-high tenor voice and we all miss him SO MUCH! J None joined the navy, but sings with them still whenever he is on leave. There have been others as well...Tony Wakim who left about 5 years ago and was replaced by J. None. Its fun having so many guest singers! Just go with the changing faces and voices as you fall down the rabbit hole. You can't go wrong with Voiceplay!

as for who the goofy one is... that would be all of them, lol. Layne (beatboxer) is the prankster, Eli (bald guy) is the rocker tough guy on the outside, but secretly a goof on the inside, Cesar (latino) is all heart and puppy dog energy, and Geoff (bass) is the "I'm old and boring" on the outside and the comedian sweetheart on the inside. All of them are really serious about their artistry, and take absolutely nothing about themselves seriously, and are willing to do whatever it takes for their performance. If that includes dressing up in women's clothing or acting ridiculous, painting their skin in all kinds of colors, wearing the most ridiculous costumes or exposing their own insecurities and displaying their inner emotions openly, then so be it. They do it. They are not afraid of taking huge risks and just go where their artistry takes them, no matter the consequences. Well, they may be afraid to do so, but they do so anyway. And they do it all themselves. They arrange the music, they concept and produce the videos, they design the sets and costumes, they build the sets and create the light design, they record the audio and edit the audio, and edit the video. The only thing they don't do themselves is the camera work (they can't operate a moving camera and perform for the camera at the same time), advanced makeup and the final audio engineering. everything else is them from top to bottom, making their art 100% *them*. Amazing artists.

You were correct, it is pronounced Jeff, he is the bass supreme. Layne is the beatboxer, Eli (pronounced Ellie, like jelly) is the bald one, he is tenor and then Cesar is baritone and the newest of members. All of them have vast vocal range. Geoff can sing 5 octaves. Geoff and Layne went to high school together and were in choir together and started Voiceplay. To help confusion, Earl was with them for years but retired from the group a few years ago. J.None was a member for awhile but is currently serving a term with the Navy as a musical performer. Him leaving created the fifth spot open. Since then they have had music friends fill in, they match whoever fits the song best. They all are from Orlando and have worked in Disney and Universal as performers. They have been nicknamed the theater kinds of a cappella, you can see why.

Finding people reacting to VoicePlay for the very first time is my new hobby of this summer 😉To answer more "help with the confusion" questions: VoicePlay was on the 2014 season of "The Sing-Off"(along with Home Free). But they were already putting videos on KZread as early as 2012... Back then, their line-up was Geoff Castellucci (Jaw-Dropping Bass), Layne Stein (Mind-boggling vocal percussionist), Baritone Tony Wakim, High Tenor Earl Elkins Jr,, and second tenor Eliezer (4 syllables pronounced ELL-ee-EE-zer -- "Ellee" for short) Jacobson. Those are the guys you'll see in their earliest videos on KZread. Tony Wakim got bitten by the video production bug, and left singing in the group in 2016, so he could devote more time and energy running the video production company PattyCake Productions (he and Layne Stein are actually co-owners of the business together), where VoicePlay films almost all their videos. So Tony really is still part of the group. He's just behind the camera. After Tony left, J. None came on to be their baritone. As others have said, Earl Elkins left for private reasons in 2020, and has not been replaced, so they've been filling out their fifth voice with guests (in their videos, the guest is almost always in the middle). J. None joined the U.S. Navy Choir in 2021, and Cesar de la Rosa (playing Tio Felix) joined a couple months later. J. still comes back as guest when he's on leave, and is their guest singer in their most recent video. Most of the arrangements are done by either Geoff or Layne, and Geoff's wife Kathy is their production manager. Final audio mixing is done by Ed Boyer, who also mixes for Home Free. Recommended: "Just Sing" -- a video put out during the first COVID lock-down, with everyone joining in remotely. It's a collaboration between VoicePlay's then-current and former members, colleagues, friends and family, and if you turn on closed-captions, you'll see everyone's name, and how they're related to the group. Also, it's a fundraiser for a musicians' health charity. And it's a real mood-lifter.

Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbit hole! A little history: VoicePlay formed in 1997 as a male quintet. Geoff (bass) and Layne (beatboxer) are the last remaining original members, forming the group when they were still in high school. In older videos you'll see a really buff guy with a high tenor voice; that's Earl, also a founding member. Eli (short for Eliezer, the bald tenor) joined a few years later. You'll also see J. None in earlier videos. Sadly, Covid disrupted the entire music community, and VoicePlay was no exception. Tours had to be canceled, their lives put on hold, and although they tried to do social distance videos ("My Mother Told Me" and "I Will Survive") as a musician, I can attest... it sucked, and even in 2023 it's only slowly picking back up. For personal reasons, Earl left near the beginning of Covid. As the pandemic dragged on, in 2021 J. None decided to take a leap he had been thinking about for years: to join the Navy as a lead singer. This allowed him to perform live music again and serve his country. It's a 5-year tour, and VoicePlay is keeping the 5th spot open for him to return. (He's the guest in their newest, "In the Air Tonight" and in "Friends on the Other Side" among many other songs since his departure.) In the meantime, they hired Cesar as a baritone (the sassy Puerto Rican singer). So they've had lots of members come and go over the decades, each bringing a new flair, new sound, and steering the group into new genres, like J. None rapping or Cesar singing in Spanish (or here, using his natural Latin accent as opposed to his usual American accent). The diversity in voices, styles, and genres means there's a song for everyone. If you like traditional acapella, "True Colors" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" are lovely 5-voice harmonies, no beatboxing, no post-production effects. If you like to rock out, "Dream On" or "Carry on Wayward Son" are classics. If you enjoy a little stage performance, "Oogie Boogie Song" and "Hoist the Colours" use elaborates sets and costumes. (Pretty much a VoicePlay specialty!) If you like Disney, there's no shortage of songs: Moana, Little Mermaid, Hercules. (Disney loved their music so much, they've invited the group to play at Disney World). If you like Halloween, they are THE acapella group for spooky songs and create at least one Halloween song per year, like In the Hall of the Mountain King or most of the songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Well, that's more than enough to help you pick a few you like. They really are a fun group, good for a mental health break. In the video, you asked who is our favorite voice. Picking a favorite singer in VoicePlay is even harder than picking a favorite acapella group between VP, Home Free, and Pentatonix. Each is unique and can't really be compared to the other, besides personal preference. (I mean, I'm a little biased toward the stage show element of VoicePlay due to my music history, but I wouldn't say the others are less talented... oh no! Just my own preference.) 1) Obviously, Geoff stands out right away with that insanely low bass. He's got the lowest modal voices (singing in your chest and head voice) of the 3 big acapella groups. Tim Foust of Home Free can growl deeper, but only in shows, not studio recordings. Tim has recorded down to a C1 in growl (so really close to Geoff) and Avi Kaplan (formerly of Pentatonix) has hit a E1, both have G1 as their lowest chest voice, whereas Geoff's lowest chest note is D1 and he recorded a mindboggling B0 (2nd white key on a piano) in "Halo" and "Valhalla Calling." Geoff's use of subharmonics to reach those basement notes was unique when he first began to use them, but he put out a video teaching how to sing like that, and super low singing became a TikTok challenge over the past 2 years! As far as I know, the only singer to match his B0 in a professional recording (and not some TikTok) is a 17-year-old Egyptian prodigy bass singer named Marwan who is in the Bass Gang. (They are another acapella group you may want to check out some day... if you can imagine 4 super-low bass singers! Their version of "Mad World" broke my old headphones, haha!) 2) Eli has worked as a voice actor and sang in a rock band before joining VoicePlay... and it shows! He is a rock god in disguise, and when he's allowed to release that inner power.... oooooh boy! "Nothing Else Matters" really shifted the group to use his gritty rock voice more, and the newer songs have been a huge evolution, partly because, after Earl left the group, Eli needed to reach the higher parts he had always covered, partly... I think they realized, the fans LOVED that gritty side. He has changed the most out of all the members. Sure, Geoff can go lower than he could 5 years ago, Layne learned new sound effects, but Eli grew a mustache and took on an entirely different personality. His range is also scary. In stage shows, he covers bass for Geoff, and then suddenly he's belting high notes that some women would struggle to hit! 3) Then there's the newest, Cesar. I think we still haven't seen his full potential, but what we HAVE seen.... wow! He has so much emotion in his voice, from making you giggle like in this song, to making you want to cry like "I Can't Make You Love Me." He brings in so much sass and silliness, flamboyance and fun, which is perfect for a group that doesn't want to take themselves too seriously and instead just enjoy making music together. 4) I'm going to count J. None even if you didn't see him here, because we see him as still part of the group, just away temporarily. His voice is smooth, full of soul, warm butter that melts you, the king of runs, but his stage presence is not to be underestimated. His acting skills are fantastic. The Navy is lucky to be "borrowing" him. 5) And finally, there's Layne, the beatboxer. His range is the widest (potentially), he has gotten even lower than Geoff with various vocal tricks like Ingressive Phonation (singing while breathing inward, we heard him do it at the very end with his little closing line). Yet when he sings naturally... I think any VoicePlaya agrees, he has the most angelic voice of them all. When Layne sings, we fall silent to listen, because he's their secret weapon to hit us in the feels... his voice, AND his violin! (Yep, musical instruments can be allowed in acapella, under the right circumstances.) Well, this turned out to be a right essay! Sorry if it was a little too enthusiastic, but this group and the VP community helped me emotionally over the past few years, and I get excited to see people discover them for the first time. I hope at least some of this will help you along the way. Now I want to go check out some of your videos on cats. (Also, a reminder to myself, my kitty is late on her vaccinations!)

VoicePlay are really amazing. And yes, they've had five full-time members in the past, but since Earl left the group in 2020, they have never been at a full five members. They even had a period where the member JNone left the group to join the US Navy Choir. Since completing boot camp, he's been back many times, thankfully, but he isn't a permanent member by any means. Cesar joined the group after JNone's departure, and he has brought a lot of wonderful energy to the group. Still, they will rotate through guests, so that they've got five members in any given song. What's even more wonderful is that their bass singer Geoff, has his own solo channel as well. He's done a lot of amazing work there. He isn't strictly acapella on his channel, but rather, he does videos where he will layer himself several times within the video, appearing as multiple people. I highly recommend his recent cover of I See Fire as one that he does a particularly powerful job, though I'm still partial to his covers of Sixteen Tons and House of the Rising Sun. I hope you get to explore more of their videos, both on your channel and in life in general!

How funny you put up the Rhianna reference- if you missed it, the bgv (background vocals) after the word "umbrella" continue - "ella - ella- eh" .🤣🤣 Voiceplay is known for putting in all kinds of Easter eggs like that. 😊 Also Geoff's costume change shows he's Camillo, not Bruno.

Eli is not Eliza, it's Eliezer, so he shortens he name to Eli, pronounced like ellie. Geoff (bass) and Layne (vocal percussion) have been singing together since middle school along with a now ex-member Earl who can be seen in older videos, He left in 2020 for undisclosed personal reasons. Other members have come and gone over the years but they are currently four, taking on guests to make up the five. This extra is often J.None who was a full member until 2021 when he left to sing with the US navy. He comes back when on leave to become a temporary member again. Certain songs call for a female voice and they have a wide selection of amazing female friends to call on for that, as here.

I loved your appreciation of this. It is truly a delight. On their Disney related pieces, they don’t change it up as much as they do in other pieces. Most, if not all of them, worked at Disney and I think that they think that’s untouchable. (I LOVE their Little Mermaid Medley. ) While Geoff (bass) does have a great sense of humor, the prankster of the group is Layne, the beat boxer. When they added Cesar Geoff said it was because he fit in with their special brand of dumb. To see something where they’ve taken a song you’ve heard before and made it their own, try the cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On, Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters, or there a recent cover of Phil Collins In the Air Tonight. The lineup has indeed changed over the years, but you have to remember that some of them have been together since middle school (early 90s). Geoff Castellucci, the bass singer, Layne Stein, beatboxer, and Earl Elkins Jr (high tenor who is no longer with them) all met in middle school. In high school they started competing locally and that’s when they met (tenor) Eli (pronounced Ellie) Jacobsen who went to school in a nearby town (and competed against them😊.) After high school they issued their first album released in 1997 under the name 4:2:Five. I cannot remember the other member but it was Geoff , Layne, and Earl. In the early 2000s Eli Jacobsen joined them as a permanent member after touring with some rock bands. Around 2010 their beat boxer, Scott Porter, left to pursue an acting career. At that time, Layne who had been the baritone, switched to beatboxing and Tony Wakim joined them until about 2016. When Tony left they added J None as baritone. In 2020, Earl, their laser high tenor, left and that spot has yet to be filled. In 2021 J was recruited by the Navy to sing with them and they were able to add Cesar Delarosa to the mix. They’ve always had a lot of featured artists (almost always placed in the middle). Sometimes it’s because of the song needing a different kind of voice. Ashley has done a couple of songs with them including several of their minis which are on a separate channel. The most frequent collaborator is Rachel Potter who has been in close to a dozen productions with them. In the video when Ashley’s line got stolen by Geoff (with the flower petals) he was portraying Camilo the Shapeshifter. Most of the time he was channeling what he thought Bruno would be like. But then he portrayed Isabella, the perfect flower child and that’s why the costume change. (When you re-watch, check out everybody’s expressions including Ashley’s when he steals that line🤣.) There is an absolutely hysterical video of Geoff and Ashley dancing in their matching outfits(even the pink shorts!!) It’s on Instagram and it’s the second picture in the page so you have to swipe. But it is well worth going out there to check because it is so darn funny. Here is the link: instagram.com/p/CarDla3um1q/? Okay, I’m done😂.

I'm sure someone else has explained this: currently, Voice Play has four permanent members: Geoff (which yes, is pronounced "Jeff") the bass, Eli (his full name is Eliazar, so its pronounced like "eh-lee and not ee-lie) who is the bald gentleman, Layne, who is the vocal percussionist, and Cesar, who is the youngest of the group. J None (his actual name is Jesse Nunn) is on sabbatical with the US Navy right now, but we hope for his return. Most of the other names are former members who left for one reason or another and were replaced to reach the current lineup. Though special mention should be made for Tony Wakim, who went behind the scenes pretty much permanently and is now one of their primary producers. Pretty much everything they do, though, is with a guest vocalist (at least until and/or if J None comes back permanently). These are usually plucked from a list of regular collaborators. Ashely Diane, Deejay Young, Omar Cardona, Rachel Potter, Lauren Paley, and Jose Rosario Jr. have all done multiple collaborations with the group, and many people think (and I admit I am one of them) that any one of these people would make a fine replacement for J None should he decide to not come back.

Currently there are four members: Eli (pronounced "Ellie" like "Ellie Mae" in "The Beverly Hillbillies"), Cesar, Geoff, and Laine. Laine is the beat boxer, Geoff is the bass. The most recent former member is J None, who left the group to serve in the Navy. Earl left and was replaced by J None. So right now, they have four members and have a lot of featured performers (both male and female). Voice Play is the most theatrical of the a capella groups. Their most recent, Valhalla Calling, features J None (former member) and it's really great! Hoist the Colors is also great. Vet question for you, I just about bobcat "fever" from Lone Star ticks and dog ticks killing cats after having been infected by a tick bite but weeks after the bite. Is this true? I have feral colony of about 20 on my 77 acres. I have one old Bengal ~15 yrs old, and 8 babies kidnapped over a course of about 11 yrs. Most of them spend the day outside around my camper and the ones I've turned into tame cats come in at night. I'm down a hillside, hidden behind a couple thousand trees, and about 600 ft from the road. I keep kitty kibbles in a large pickle barrel and feed all of them in the morning with added soft food, and 2-4 kibble servings from early afternoon til 9pm when I gather my few into the camper for the night. We have ticks - I have ticks that pick of me and whichever cat that will tolerate me getting ticks off. I alternate Frontline, and Advantage on my cats, ferals won't let me do that, but even so I suspect I need a herd of guinea hens to eat up the ticks. Are they as dangerous as the article said. What can I do about it? Thanks.

Thank you for the recommendations! Yes, ticks can carry a number of different diseases and the specifics will vary significantly based on where you are geographically located. As a result, you need to ask your local veterinarian about which specific tick species are around where you live and, therefore, which prevention options are going to be best for your specific situation.

@@VetMedCorner You're very welcome 🤗. Yes. We all love Voiceplay and are happy and proud of that. Reactors also have mentioned that their subscriber count went up rapidly when they started reacting to them. Which is true because we love watching people react to them. They are extremely talented and very unique.

They definitely seem to be exceptional! I do tell people that most of my videos are research based, best practices info to help people to care for their pets, and then once/mo or so I do a fun mental health break video and react to some a capella! As a result, I may not be the best fit for all the VP fans... But I love music and want to have some fun so I really enjoy putting these videos out!

For some reasons, the comments I left under this video keep disappearing, but it's ok, others have already given you the informations I had put in those comments. 🙂 Here's the link to the video, by Huldra Draco, that makes the history of Voiceplay since the beginning, when they were called 4:2:5 to pretty much the present day: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGqL2qWweNHLkqw.html 🙂. Also, others have mentioned that Geoff has his own channel, and well, THAT is another rabbit hole in its own right. 🙂 Just subscribed in anticipation for more Voiceplay AND Geoff... See you next time! 🙂

I really appreciate the link! Thank you 😊 Just so you know, most of my videos are research based, best practices information to help people care for their pets, but I do these sorts of reaction videos once a month to have some fun! If that makes you decide this isn't the best fit for you, I completely understand!
