I'm so happy that you took the time to feature Gigi and the Vibes on your channel! There's a lot of truth in what you mentioned about Filipinos and their love of singing because this provides the basis for Gigi's impressive singing talent. Voice lessons are not the norm in the Philippines and not a lot of Filipinos can afford them or would find it even a priority. However, they are passionate about karaoke and it is this platform that allows them to try out their singing in a fun and comfortable way - with family, friends and work peers. There is no voice coach to teach them about techniques. What they learn is purely from emulation of their favorite singers. Vocal dynamics, breath control, vibrato, articulation is not something they consciously think about - it's more of feeling that the delivery is "right". Even without any known formal vocal schooling, Gigi is very confortable with her vocal range and is fearless in trying out new things. Watching her perform is delightful because she puts so much feeling into it and the vocal technique becomes second nature. Gigi has been schooled in live streams where she takes requests from fans. Some of these songs are from a list of hundreds they already performed previously but they also attempt to sing new ones they have not done before. While a lot of what you say may be true for the large majority of amateur singers in the Phillipines (or anywhere else) in this day and age people have access to the internet and can gain top quality information on vocal pedagogy, singing tips as well as very useable vocal exercises to grow your singing voice and develop sound healthy vocal technique. Ideally you need guidance and assistance but some people have an innate talent and understanding of the voice and get by a long with information online I speak from my own personal experience in growing my voice and developing world class elite level singing technique. You just have to be smart in selecting your sources and have the discipline of training your voice religiously and correctly long term and don't stop or drop the ball by being complacent and lazy. Having said all that singers at the skill level of Gigi, Morissette, Lea Salonga, Katrina Velarde et al. all have top level vocal coaches throughout the years from the early stages of their careers or even from their youth. You just don't get to be on that skill level by one day getting out of bed and picking up a microphone. I can tell (so can many other people such as vocal coaches) a trained voice, a highly trained voice and an untrained very good singer from many things such as placement, resonance, jaw and facial tension, tone, diaphragmatic support, positioning of larynx. breath control etc. Why am I saying all this? I don't want aspiring singers to think great singing skills are a result of God given talent alone. It requires hard work and dedication as well as making smart choices of knowing what works for you and what doesn't. You just have to put in the effort and be prepared to work for your goals LONG TERM. There is no magic pudding or magic tips or instant magic solution. It's 5% talent and 95% disciplined hard work. You will only be as good as the amount of work you are prepared to put in. And if anyone thinks they can get by with their talent alone just remember it is a tough industry this music thing is and they are competing with maybe people with less talent but who are putting so much work to achieve their goals. So in the end the contest is between complacency and dedicated ambition. Life tells us the battle between these two mostly does not end so well with the former and the latter as a general rule will always prevail. Gigi will attest to this just like any other singer who sings at that elite level of singing (me included). Doing it alone will get you fast but doing it together (with assistance and guidance be it from the internet or a personal vocal coach) will get you far.

@@TheProtestantPope I agree. You can only get at a certain level on your own but you can also progress further with a good vocal mentor. Kudos to a lot of the vocal teachers who take the time to react to song performances aside from their other publicly-available voice instructions.

Hi Christi, great analysis. The Gigi rabbit hole is deep! U had some Q's which i will try to answer. Yes she's untrained & was joining singing contests for many yrs. She's been playing with this wedding/party band for over a decade. During the pandemic, everything was closed down for a very long time in PH. They had no gigs, became very broke & depressed. So they decided to do livestreams from a 1-car garage for 2-3 hrs, taking song requests. They only had a few viewers when they started, but fast forward to 2024, they now have 2.14 Million subs on their channel. They have many videos, but for starters, u can chk out BETTER DAYS (Diane Reeves), FLY ME TO THE MOON, ALL I ASK (Adele). They moved to a real music studio last year. They are now finishing up their US & Canada tour. I saw them live in New York last month ❤

Gigi and the Gigi Vibes are amazing. I know how great Mori, Katrina, and Sohyang are but Gigi is my favorite artist today. Gigi's golden tone and versatility are out of the world. Keep listening and prepare to be amazed. She has so many sides. 80s Gigi is my favorite.

Yes, you are absolutely right. Most Filipino singers do NOT have formal training. It is just part of the culture to encourage to children at a very young age. Of course, there are a very few exceptions such as Leah Salonga and a few others. After being discovered, some go through some sort of training at their own expense. Gigi is so versatile because she does different genres and actually makes the song her own.she even has a Rock medley and many more! Thank you for reacting to Filipino singers.

yes she was a wedding singer with her band before, she sings in a lot of big corporate events, big birthday events, special big events of politics and all that. That was her bread and butter. The audio engineer is also a singer in a premier group in their country.

Singing is part of Filipino culture. Just like beauty pageants, singing contests ALL AGES are held all year round in some parts of the country - in schools, town/city/provincial festivals and tv shows - even among TikTokers where they give cash prizes for winners. Then you have singing in parties (birthdays, wedding, office, etc). Then you have karaoke at malls and homes just in case you get the singing bug activated out of nowhere. With Filipinos, not only rice is life, but singing is also our oxygen.

I enjoyed your analysis and insight. I should point out that this video is from more than 2 years ago, and her voice has changed since early 2023 when she was diagnosed with vocal nodules. I saw her live in April 2024, and can say that Gigi's vocal tone has deteriorated. She can still hit the notes, and hopefully she will regain that beautiful tone.

Well im sure u know these are from livestreams they did for 2+ years from a garage. These ran for 2-3 hours, 3x a week, taking song requests from viewers. So she has to sing hundreds & hundreds of songs. That's talent right there, not just Gigi but the band members as well.
