This was one of my favorite songs came out in 1988. I was in my 20s. Getting ready to hit my 30s Life was good. This one of those songs where you kick back after a long day at work and just chill and Brenda Russell. Her voice is like smooth cognac. I'm glad you guys did this one😊😊

The male singer backing Brenda is Joe "Bean" Esposito , who dueted with Donna Summer on the 1979 hit Heaven Knows (#4). He was part of the group Brooklyn Dreams. He also had a song from the Flashdance Soundtrack called "Lady, Lady, Lady", that was popular. Brenda is a prolific songwriter, If Only for One Night, Think It Over, Get Here have been covered and where hits for other artists.

Another great Brenda Russell song is "So Good, So Right!!"
This song was written about Stevie Wonder. Great song!!
Her voice is silk. She sings her heart out. This song is one of a kind. You are pulled in from the beginning and it never lets you go.
Forgot to add a similar song that's very good is 'Save the best till last' by Vanessa Williams-Colin Ward.
Brenda Russell came out during an exceptional time for women singers, and I always feel she gets overlooked. This song is So GOOD!! An amazing performance!!
So so SO happy you did this one! This song is so haunting that I heard it when it first came out and it’s stuck with me all this time. 🥰❤️
Thank you so much! I requested this song a couple of months ago! Have a blessed weekend! Love love this song!
Such a smooth sultry voice I haven’t heard this song in a long time.
Brenda Russell, Shirley Bassey and Norah Jones all on the same day? Oh hell yes.
A melancholy and gently refreshing sound style that I ve always found so beautiful.

She reminds me of Sade and Anita Baker...... Hey Amber, a suggestion for Female Fridays is Dawn Sears " Odds and Ends, Bits and Pieces". Dawn was a backup singer for Vince Gill and had an incredible voice. Sadly we lost her to cancer in 2014.
She and Anita Baker had some real smooth vocals.
Thing is...SHE plays the piano, her songwriting is great, her career is long and awesome...
I Do Seem to Remember this song on the Radio In The Day. Haven't heard it in So Long though ... Decades! Really Beautiful Song & another Great Choice, Amber! Hope You Guys and Your Family have a Great Weekend! :)
The guy in the video is Joe “Bean” Esposito. He sang with Donna Summer on Heaven Knows he was the lead singer of the Brooklyn dreams. He was also on the Flashdance soundtrack Lady Lady Lady which was a big hit for him and You are the best from the Karate Kid
I love this song...a classic 80's song.
Haven’t heard this for a very long time, Thanks for this reaction. Great vocal and song by Brenda. ❤
I saw her in concert - front row center. Beautiful music from a beautiful person.
As far as i remembered, this was Brenda Russell's greatest song.. And it was really good, one of 80's underrated female songs.. If you want some 80's songs sung by female artists, I can suggest, Superwoman by Karyn White, I Still Believe by Brenda Starr, Starting Over Again by Natalie Cole, Till They Take My Heart Away by Clair Marlo, Almost Over You by Sheena Easton, Foolish Beat by Debbie Gibbson, Better Days by Dianne Reeves and many more

I really liked Brenda Russell's first album best. So Good So Right, God Bless You, If Only for One Night etc. so many great songs on that album!
Brenda was a prolific songwriter and I am glad she kept this one for herself
Memory unlocked. What a great song.
Soulful. Classy. Romantic.
Brenda Russell never made a bad recording. Love all of her music.
One of my all time favorite songs ! Brenda’s silky, sultry voice is an absolute treasure ! Thanks for this one !
This is a great end of 80's song. 1988 and feeling that R&B vibe. Play the group EXPOSE - "Seasons Change" For female fridays.
whats equally amazing is that Brenda Russell wrote a song called GET HERE that was covered and gave rise to another amazing talent in the 80s OLETA ADAMS....and I swear I thought they were the same person .....I believe Tears For Fears also had a hand in her discovery
My generation of music had everything and it all was unique and original. Ms Russell is a amazing songwriter..
She is a great songwriter she wrote Luther Vandross “Only for one night”.
New artists for next Female Friday: 1. "Angel" by Angela Winbush (pronounced Ahn-juh-luh) 2. "Baby Come to Me" by Regina Belle 3. "Congratulations" by Vesta Williams 4. "Secret Rendezvous" by Karyn White 5. "Mercedes Boy" by Pebbles
This song reminds me of my beloved Maternal Grandfather. He was an organist and a piano player. Self taught (but couldn't read music) had a keen-ear and I worshipped him. Rest In Peace Grandfather Leslie John Robertson (1928-2021) lost to the deadly Coronavirus😢😢😢

This was just another great song in the 80’s, week after week on the top 40 charts. Comparing it to today’s music, we were spoiled in the 80’s.
OMG! I was just listening to this song YESTERDAY. Still love it so much 😊😊😊
Brenda Russell - In The Thick Of It.....👍
Beautiful song. So atmospheric.
Man this had so much airplay when it came out and even into the late 90’s. Ballads like this were amazing.
A recommendation for Female Friday - a female duet! Brenda Russell has a great duet with Oleta Adams called "We Will Find a Way." It has a beautiful message and was used in a film called Corrina, Corrina, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ray Liotta - also recommended for your movie days! 😊🎵🎶
You gave this person what they want! Love this song.

This came out when I was in my first year of college and all these years later I still love it. It’s a timeless song and will never go out of style.
Brenda Russell's "Piano In the Dark" is one of my absolute favorite songs in the world. Unfortunately, she never really had another hit of any consequence. Here's another one for a future Female Friday that I'll bet no one has suggested. Check out Chi Coltrane (first name is pronounced "Shy") and the song "Thunder and Lightning." She's a one-hit wonder who released this incredible song in 1972. She blows the roof off and is super easy on the eyes (gorgeous, actually). Fun fact: She's still around (age 74), still looks amazing for her age, and still occasionally performs (although you never really hear about her, as she mostly plays very small venues). For a brief period in the 197s, her star burned bright as she appeared with The Who, The Eagles, Stevie Wonder, and Rod Steward. Here's a live version of her one and only hit (but boy, it was a really good one): kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yn2ZyMV9f5XZabQ.html
I loooove this song ever since! Makes me cry too...
I haven’t heard this song in years, beautiful
I remember this song but it’s been awhile since I heard it. Gotta say, as soon as the chorus hit, I was immediately transported back to my high school days when I didn’t have a care in the world. I’m now in my early 50’s with lots of cares. Thanks for the flashback, however brief it may have been…
These soft 80's jazz like songs were wonderful. Brenda Russell and Sade, plus Double (who sings Captain of her Heart)... All one needs is a Brandy and a Cuban cigar!
Great song which did really well in the UK, memories of happy times, thanks for sharing this 😊
I’ve been waiting for this one! Oh, so good! I listened to this over and over for years. Still do!
This song was nominated for "Song of the Year"" at the Grammys. Brenda Russell also wrote huge hits for Oleta Adams "Get Here" and Donna Summer "Heaven Knows".. You should listen to "Get Here" by Oleta Adams! and "Heaven Knows" by Donna Summer!
One of my favorite artists , she had a few hits in the 70’s , like “So Good, So Right”, y’all would love that one, but she found her stride in the 80’s, with “ Get Here( beautifully covered by Oleta Adams in the ‘90’s) , “ This Time I Need You”, “ Le Restaurant” , “ Jarreau”( her tribute to Sir Al Jarreau , if you haven’t discovered this legend don’t know what you guys are waiting on) “ Kiss Me With The Wind”, “ Stop Running Away” and others. She’s also wrote so many classics for other artists , and has also always been a staple in the jazz world.
Brenda started as a vocalist but was actually probably best known as a songwriter and producer for people like Patrice Rushen and Donna Summer. Another single she wrote off of the album that “Piano in the Dark” called “Get Here” became a huge hit for Oleta Adam’s (you should definitely check out Oleta’s rendition of that song). Brenda also wrote the score for the Broadway version of “The Color Purple” which was nominated for a Tony and a Grammy.
Russell is far better known as a songwriter than a singer despite her powerful voice. Her songs have been recorded by Donna Summer, Oleta Adam's, Earth Wind and Fire, Luther Vandross and a singer she resembles vocally, Chaka Khan.
I LOVE piano when it's played with that sultry slow jazz sound! I'd forgotten this song! Thanks for reminding me! Loved it then and still love it now!
I had a friend that had a very popular band and they covered this song. She said it’s one of the hardest songs she’s ever sang which surprised me because it seems such a calm vibe.
Oh man such a great great song,,, IT WAS BACK THEN AND IT STILL IS!! So beautiful…. I get lost in this song, you will to the more you listen to it
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!!! ❤❤❤❤
Love the background vocals as well...provided by Joe 'Bean' Esposito who is famous for "You're The Best" from the Karate Kid soundtrack.
Beautiful song thank you1
It has been years since I've heard this. She did her thing on this one. I miss the 80s
The whole song is understated, but that's what I like about it. There was really nothing else like it in the 80s. Great song!
I'm 49 and I only just heard this song 4 years ago!! What a great smoky bar song. That where I first heard it.
I was only 10 when this song came out but it’s one of the few love songs from my childhood that I really loved. There were a few that I “understood” even though the subject matter was over my head. When I was 8, I got Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA album for my bday. Theres a song called “Downbound Train” on it that made me cry fat tears every time I heard it. Still does. Not a love song, but a very melancholy one. I didn’t fully understand the lyrics at that age, but I FELT them. That’s the power of music
I remember this song from my teens. My friend's younger brother gave me a mixed cassette and this was one of the songs on it. I also remember when it came out I was a venture scout at the time and we had different things doing like weekend camps, hiking the terrains and going to see the leatherback turtles. We also did guard of honour duties at a function at the newly built hospital. I remember that day, the wing where we were at was mostly glass, it rained and had thunder and lightning so through the glass you could see the lightning and it was really cold with the rain and the A/C. Great memories, not about love for me but memories of events that was happening in my life when most of these songs were released. The best times.
this is one of my all time favorite songs
Absolutely amazing song. Great choice!
This song is brilliantly made and song! Give Oleta Adams a try too
Man, I suggested this song so many times. I'm so glad you got to it. Thank you.
I loved this song and I had forgotten all about it.
Regually played track, I love it so beautiful
Always one of my favorite songs. Also check out her singing “Get Here”. Another beautiful song.
Such a gorgeous song.
Brenda had been at it for more than a decade when she finally broke through with this jazzy hit. She's a great talent. Another good tune by Brenda: "It's Something," released a few years before this one. And for another cool, moody song by a female singer from the early '80s, check out "Remind Me" by Patrice Rushen.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I used to play this song in college like a lot.
Welcome aboard, youngsters! I have this Brenda Russell album on my Ipod, but haven't listened to it for quite a while. Thank you for reminding me to give a listen to this album tonight as I fall asleep. 😊
So smooooooooth! Hard to believe this Lady is now 74. It seems like yesterday.
Such an underrated artist and song. Pure magic
I absolutely love your all’s channel. KZread reactions can be an oversaturated medium, but there’s an authenticity and spirit you all exude that’s refreshing. Watching your reactions to songs I’ve loved for years is definitely vicarious. Brenda Russell has a succinctness to her that’s fabulous. She also produced Patrice Rushen’s Straight from the Heart album which is phenomenal. P.S. I highly recommend Jam & Spoon’s “Find Me”. It would be an extremely interesting episode.
This is one of my personal favorites. Brenda Russel is also a great songwriter as well. One of her songs was a hit for a former member of Tears For Fears, Oleta Adams, called “Get Here”.
I was 10 when this came out and I loved it even back then. A classmate of mine used to ask me to sing it for him, LOL.
Brenda's smooth vocal slay. I feel like she inspired Toni Braxton among others. Get Here (If You Can) will tear your heartstrings!
Love this song and her voice too, why wasn't she more popular? Madness
Finally a Brenda Russell reaction! Check out her great song "So Good So Right", a big hit. As Brenda Gordon she was in the ensemble group Dr Music with hits like "Sun Goes By" and "One More Mountain To Climb" (written by Neil Sedaka)... Brenda also sang back-up vocals (with then husband Brian Russell) on Neil Sedaka's "Laughter In The Rain"... also wrote "Get Here" covered by Oleta Adams. Brenda's father was Gus Gordon a one time member of The Ink Spots.
Sometimes its not just a song its where you heard it and this lovley song is a example just takes roght back
In the thick of it. Is another great song by Brenda Russell 😊
