Additionally, on April 1, Simon sent Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on American talk show Conan. Simon wrote, "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." Draiman responded, "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. Heartwarming story - especially for Simon and Garfunkel lovers like me . . . . . “Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what. Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind. Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively. Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.” Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed. Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.” Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

I think maybe something some people don't get is that not all singing is meant to be "pretty" and "likable", and that not all beauty is "nice" and "correct". Or even further, that not all anger is bad or wrong either. This cover is really an excellent showcase of one way of "what angry growling is for", because it shows us an emotional story that wouldn't be complete without anger: It begins in loss and grief at the dearth of communication and connection, which is shown in the abandoned and destroyed instruments and desolate landscapes, and perfectly mirrored in the tender, grieving clean vocals. Humankind is shown as disconnected and lost. The singer(and the band) then attempts to get people to listen to eachother, and to hear the message. But when the message falls to deaf ears, instead of falling back to despair, quietness and acquiescence, they dig into their fury. They won't accept and give up humanity to the worship of money and consumption (the neon god), but *demands* to be heard, *demands* to break through. In essence, the message to me is that culture, music and humanity have to shake themselves free, even by anger, to find themselves, find eachother, to live for eachother and not for neon lights. And David takes us through from those emotions of sorrow and loss, through the build up of hope and confidence, up to a crescendo of anger - and finally back to the calm of a new possibility as the musicians arrive with their songs. And in this context the distorted singing is an absolutely incredible way to convey that emotion. I'd say this is an excellent "gateway" for people who "don't get why people would listen to such ugly things". This is why.

Yes, there is autotune. Yes he hates it. But I (and many others) are allowed to love it. Many artists hate the work that others can't get enough of. There is actually a spot where not even the autotune could help him and it was an obvious wrong note. But the cold put a second level of rasp in his voice that can't be autotuned out. The look on his face and the fists he pounds as he fights for that note are very visually powerful. The staging with the lights slowly turning on, highlighting each new instrument as it joins in and the music swells. That's visually powerful. It's not just the voice that makes a song great.

@@TheCharismaticVoice Hello. I love this song the way Disturbed sings it. this is a video of Draiman worming up during sound checks with the song 'Unchained Melody'. loudwire.com/watch-disturbed-david-draiman-warm-up-unchained-melody-soundcheck/ About David, some have told you that he is a classically trained vocalist and does exercises to safely make his voice raspy. Look at his mouth and jaw positioning when he is holding those raspy words. And also how he holds on the 'N' in silence. I also read that he has or had bad acid reflux disease and needed surgery to repair the valve between the esophagus and stomach. One report also said that he has a 6 octave range, which may be stretching it a bit BUT i'm not the professional. If you see my 'profile pic' you can see who I was for 21 year ('90--'11), well who I still am but no longer active. In the middle of that time I spent 10 days working at the site (Ground Zero) in New York City. When I hear this song, I see those sights, the pictures, the videos, the pile in front of me. I didn't search for people, but I performed support roles. Mostly I cleaned FDNY and NYPD guys off as they got off the pile to go into the rehab or to leave. And so many of those lyrics voice what those images were.

True, you have some covers or "interpretations" that bring a whole new meaning to lyrics, a new depth and sometimes they are even more rich than the original without taking away the value. It's what I think about sweet dreams by marylin manson or imagine by a perfect circle... It takes really a lot of genius to make those arrangements and end with a tribute.

@@KackWORSTFan86 yes, THE bruce dickinson. he puts his pants on just like everybody else, one leg at a time. the only difference is, when he's done he makes gold records.

This is one of the best reaction videos I think I've ever seen. Knowing how amazing this version is and how thrilled you would be and anticipating your reaction to various parts was thrilling❤

David is the musical definition of never judge a book by its cover. He can put together a beautiful melodic performance or do 5 minutes of growling and animalistic rage.

Thing is you NEED the control he exhibits here in order to not hurt yourself with the more brutal sounds.

I've been listening to Disturbed since the early 2000's - and I had no idea he could do something like this. It blew me away.

I saw disturbed in 2009 and 2019, and it was like seeing two different bands. 2009 it was straight up metal, 2019, the only true metal sound was from 3 or 4 songs out of a 2 hour set

You listen to music with your entire face. When you're hearing a song you look like the most kind and caring person in the world.

I was just about to say this! The way her eyes go wide at 1:46 and her slight smile at 1:53 is so telling. Those are obviously the expressions of someone whose expectations were completely blown away with this cover. Seeing her emotions at those two examples invoked the same emotions in me, even after listening to this for the millionth time.

While the song was building up, I saw a few moments where I'm pretty sure by her expression that she wanted to join in.

I could watch this over and over just to see her face. So pretty and sweet as her face lights up and changes throughout the song. She appears to be a very innocent and sweet soul.

Agreed! I was absolutely giggling with happy delight at how happy she looked, because seeing someone obviously enjoy and appreciate something so much just gives me happy goosebumps of my own(entirely separate from the goosebumps from the song). Just watching her vibe with it was so wholesome.

Every time I hear this version of this song I get goose bumps. I love the sadness and anger he adds to the lyrics and you can really feel it. I'm glad you reviewed this version and I absolutely loved your reactions, both visual and emotional.
