Totally agree. I heard Disturbed singing it on Season 5 of Blacklist. No one should ever try to top this.

This rendition is not a performance…it’s an experience.

I honestly think this is the best live performance of any song ever. They took an awesome, iconic song and made it their own. Which is arguably better than the original.😮 Then David laid down one of the purest, cleanest, best controlled, most impactful vocal performances there has ever been. On a scale of 1 to 10 this is hands down a 100!❤

I think Queen live at Wembley stadium in 1986 is most likely the best ever live perfromance of any songs, and as far as I know also the most seen ever, the back story of why and everything is also kinda deep and theres a lot of information about it, but I dont disagree that this is very well done

First time I listened to this a few years ago, during Covid, I was completely caught off guard. I burst into tears unexpectedly at the end. I think David's voice connects to the deep sense of anger that just about all people feel, surrounding not feeling loved, valued, and respected. I don't think I can recall any other song that has brought me to tears upon first listen. His voice has unbelievable power, and his ability to take it to a scream ("and the people bowed and PRAYYYED")... there might not be any other human being who can do what he does right there. Anyway glad you enjoyed, best vocal I have ever heard, beyond a doubt.

My son died 11/5/2016, About 2 months ago. Before he died he had come up the stairs from his man cave to tell me I had to listen to this song. I was watching t.v. so i kind of put him off. Never to be dismissed I went to the computer to listen and watch Disturbed performance on Conan.I was speechless, he was amazing. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel's version. I love their version but this version from Disturbed leaves me speechless. Hate to say so,however I had to tell Chris he was right. This was an awesome rendition.Much more emotional than Simon and Garfunkel 's version.Of course he said he knew he was right. I love playing this . Makes me remember my son. Thanks

But I understand what you love about this song...me too! When I first heard it I had to replay it over and over! I prefer it to the original. How awesome that you have the memory of your son introducing you to this singer and his version of the song :)

Never thought anyone could sing this better than Simon and Garfunkel. But Disturbed gave it a fresh edge -- a different take to the message of the song's lyrics. Absolutely loved this version!

You can't really base it off of something like this since it will have been edited to perfect any imperfections before being broadcasted. But he is an amazing singer live, check out live performances of them at their own gigs. He's nearly impeccable!

Every time I hear this version of this great song I can't help but tear up. This performance should be sent into space to serve as a record to the rest of the universe of what artistic greatness we humans are capable of. I say that only half jokingly. Absolutely brilliant.

To anyone still believing that this isn't autotuned, search for the channel "Wings of Pegasus" and their analysis of this song. They have a video comparing several different versions of this song by Disturbed. This version on Conan is clearly autotuned (i.e., using live rather aggressive pitch correction), the studio version also employs pitch correction (which is a more manual and subtle version of retuning and "fixing" the notes), while there are also live versions available without autotune that are compared as well. This says nothing about the ability of the singer here -- he's incredibly talented and does NOT need autotune. Unfortunately, the music industry has decided that even really good singers should have some version of a "safety net" especially in live performances and turn on the autotune, as here. If you can't hear it, watch more videos on that "Wings of Pegasus" KZread channel. He has dozens of videos comparing autotuned vs. natural performances, so you may gradually learn to pick up on the differences. For many of us that are used to natural unprocessed voices, it sticks out like a sore thumb here. But, fair warning -- once you learn this skill, i.e., to recognize autotune better, you may not be able to turn it off. And you'll start hearing it EVERYWHERE, because it is pretty much everywhere today in popular music.

Seriously, Disturbed needs to do more songs like this one. Not everything has to be a fast paced scream fest, sometimes we need a slow yet powerful song to inspire, give pause, or reflection.

It's probably been over a decade or more but that is still the most significant thing I've ever seen in my life

I am an 82 year old and am so grateful to have been able to experience this masterful rendition of Sound Of Silence by Disturbed. This so well expresses the range of opinions that the original hinted at.

Not sure I'd say it "beats" the original Simon and Garfunkel classic. Different times, different moods, similar emotional hits they convey. Pentatonix also made a remote of this song recently, and it itself transforms the song into a more vibrant, upbeat rendition that evokes similar emotions. Music always is transformative, able to be molded and shaped in different ways to speak to different people.

His voice is like chiselled marble, and the background of the orchestra was perfect. This might be the greatest cover ever, just exceeds anything I've ever heard

Something most all of us have known for 40 years now. Rock and Metal have the BEST singers and musicians period. They can sing at the highest and lowest octave ranges. They can play the fastest most technical sounds on musical instruments. Or the most genuine softest ballads. Yet, this music is SO overlooked by the main stream of today.

When i hear this song it makes me cry because he sounds like my father when he would sing. My dad had a great voice every time he would sing in public it would rise the roof because it would fill the air and you could feel it vibrating all around you filling the air.

I love how his voice sounded so smooth in the beginning, but by the end, he was growling! That was epic!

It’s almost unbelievable, that this song was performed live. How can you possibly top this performance. Literally out of this world. Some other worldly force took over David. Chills!!

7yrs later and this performance still hits hard.

I listen to this song around 5 times a day. And last thing at night before I settle down. It was a chance encounter that I heard this song on Utube whilst listening to Simon and Garfunkel.

They do so many heavy metal songs, you forget that david draiman has such a chillingly haunting voice

I have heard this song for almost 50 years and this version is by far my favourite. He has captured the quiet anger and despair the lyrics convey. That is something the Simon and Garfunkel version did not have. It was beautiful as well, but without the raw but barely perceivable emotion that David Draiman brings to the words, it is just another great song. This version could easily become the definitive version, making it every bit as powerful as The Beatles Yesterday or Tim Buckley's piano version of Hallelujah. Nothing else is quite like this amazing work of art. The audience knew it and demonstrated their appreciation by the tiny silence which followed the last note. That is a sign of respect that few singers and musicians get today.

I can confirm this from the show I went to. It was so moving ppl were hugging and crying in the audience. Simply an amazing performance and song.

David's control is something you absolutely do NOT hear everyday. What a musician ❤

His range is incredible. He sounds angrier and grittier as it goes on. Then his signature growl. Chills for sure. So good.

One of the best quotes I've read about this performance is that if S&G's version was a warning, Disturbed's performance is the rage from the warning gone unheeded.

In all my years, I have never heard a rendition of a song that has moved me as much as this has. To take an iconic piece such as this, and reinvent it to speak to the current generation, in such a way as to never be dismissed as only a "cover," is utter genius. David was so brave to take on this piece and make it his own. Simply amazing.

The night I found Disturbed and was hooked. David’s range just killed it. To see the humility of them for 8 years is a great thing. Awesome!!!!

I remember when this aired. It gave me chills and still does. This version is sooo much better than the version they official released.

The audience was so mesmerized by this performance that you didn't hear one applause until the music was completely through. This is perhaps the greatest cover performance I have ever heard.

Watching the other clips where voice instructors listen to him to do critiques... One of them gets so emotional it chokes her up. And I completely understand where she was coming from. Close your eyes and listen and BAM.

I have seen 70 years come and go now. Heard a fair amount of music. Without a doubt this is my favorite performance EVER!

You have to listen to Dan Vasc singing this song. A metal and classical singer. He is without doubt the best vocalist in the world.. seriously.. His voice is powerful and angelic. Trust me, you have heard nothing till you hear him. He also sings, Nessun Dorma,. He brings tears to your eyes.

Yeah, i almost agree 100% it was one of my favorites growing up and i remember hearing it in '64 on WING in Dayton Ohio. I was 9 but allready a rock fan, stones, DC5, Isley Bros, Beatles and more. But this is my favorite version. Powerful delivery but for more than two decades i have been a hard core Disturbed fan

I was just assaulted…..this performance kicked my ass and made me cry……once in a lifetime ! This is one of those moments you don’t get to experience very often. Thank Disturbed!

Ok guys don’t criticize me. I’m blown down by this cover. It took me way too many years to discover this version and band. It’s stuck in my head (brain). The original was one of my favorites, until I heard this beautiful voices and arrangement. Now I can’t get enough, searching the vast hole of KZread to hear more music and interviews from these musicians. God has blessed you (all) with a powerful gift that brings me to tears. Love you ❤️

I watched this live and my dad was in the kitchen making a snack and heard it and came in and we both just sat there as quietly as humanly possible while this man crafted perfection.

He gets the entire emotion of the song exactly right. There are very few remakes that rival the original David blew past it and made it his own. The only one that I can think to rival this is Johnny Cash's remake of 9 Inch Nails.

I love the way David Draiman's voice distorts when he raises his voice. His voice is a powerhouse.

I could listen to this on an eternal loop and never get tired of it. The original was a polite warning and this is the angry response to us not listening to the warning.

Diane Davis here, I'm 75 and was 16 when Paul Simon wrote this, and he and Art Garfunkel released this classic. David Draiman took their classic and completely changed it up to such a POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL 😂 rendition and it is just as RELIVANT now as it was in the 60's if not more so at this moment, today, May 2, 2024! I came across Dan Vasc' video "Amazing Grace" and the original video of Disturbed' "The Sound of Silence". I had no idea who Dan Vasc was or the band Disturbed was and came across both of these videos purely by chance. I like to think that my spirit guides 🙏 led me to both of them. It's taken me five days of watching the many different channels and seeing all of their reactions to both their original video and their live performance on Conan before stumbling across this actual Conan on set video. I just had to add it to my collection of Disturbed, David Draiman "The Sound of Silence" Video.
