I think it's idiotic for people to expect singers in their 60s and 70s to retain the range and elasticity of their 20s and 30s. I think he sounds fantastic in this performance. This dude has been performing for 50 years. Love him.

And actually , to make a precision point , he did pretty high stuff sin e Deep Purple , but in the Geffen era of WS , he actually went out of his register . His sinus operation was 1986 , and for 3 years he had a bit less gritty voice . But it back to it in 1991, and 1993 . Unfortunnally people still have that image of 1987 , and americans especially But this is not His real style . Also many complain about the updated gritt nowadays , its funny for this people to consider themselves hard rock fans and complain about agression . I don't get it , they say " his voice is shot ". Well he always sang like this , he is just Heavier with age . The 1978-1983/84 whitesnake was more Gritty and his register , more raw . With High here and there . Instead of Belting constantly high ii 1987-1989 . Also even nowadays , people have to think That he screams way above the average , considering his age , even 1step or Half step lower this is still Tricky to do . Try to sing verses and screams of Slow and easy as he did in 2016 . Now think about the original key ti think how monster he is and was . And David is a Deep Baritone . Some classical singers would say this is not normal that he would be able to hit notes like he does .

I think it's unfair to make a blanket statement. Glenn hughes has better control of his voice and sounds better than he did in his 20s. Ronnie James Dio never lost it. Rare but there are examples

Beth, I love the way you reviewed this. David Coverdale is one of the greats. You could have picked a video from his heyday, but you chose to venture into his more recent work, with all the weight of the years and the vocal excesses he's committed. In fanboards, usually that is a polarizing question - people love it or hate it. But you, lady, you managed to point out the problems with elegance and technique, while still showing why David is still one of the greats AND putting some admiration on top of it all. Your first video on my timeline was with Ian Gillan, another of my all-time faves, and I learned a lot about his singing and writing style from you. You picked a video from his heyday; can you react someday to a more recent performance of his, especially with a newer song? His singing style changed a bit with age, he is 75 this year and I know fans are unfair when they demand his performance to be like it was when he was 25. I know he still has it. But only you can tell me what is it, that I hear but I can't name. Thank you a lot for your work.

The crowd was shouting for Ozzy sooo much they only played a few songs. The singer went nuts, lit his hair on fire, grabbed the drummers drum sticks from him and whipped them at the crowd. The drummer had a single bass small pink drum set ... I knew things would get ugly.

I actually saw him live on 3 occasions October 2011, Forevermore Tour, São Paulo November 2013, Monsters of Rock São Paulo September 2016, Greatest Hits Tour, São Paulo, just after his 65th birthday) His voice is still really consistent and he can still do some pretty difficult shit. Most of the lower and stronger notes have been passed around to Michael Devin (current Whitesnake bassist and a second vocalist that sounds much like David used to sound back in the 80's) but David still keeps it up and his composition skills have kept a great quality. Even in the Rock in Rio 2019, his voice was pretty good, even if nobody's ever gonna do a decent soundcheck for Whitesnake in Rock in RIo. Not in 84 and not in 2019. He still brought it, and he still has a kickass band just in case he fails.

Went to see Bon Jovi, did not get home disappointed. He's clearly past his prime, yes, but he managed to sing decently for 3 and a half hours. He used every trick in the book (lowering the tone here and there, handing it off to us for a good ol' singalong, generally being a showman and an entertainer) but he did it. I can forgive his terrible try on Livin' on a Prayer. I lost my voice there, too...

He's obviously got a great understanding of what his voice can, and cannot, do at this stage in life. He's not trying to over-reach and fall short in the process. Coverdale is keeping it in the pocket and manages to totally deliver in my opinion. There's some great support from backing vocalists. It all sounds big and full, he's using big stage gestures physically that help the whole thing along. The crowd look like they're totally enjoying it, and at the end of the day that's all that matters.

Such a pity he can't do this anymore, although I didn't know about the surgery and that certainly explains a few things. He still clearly wants to give it all at live concerts these days and the backup singers are amazing (keyboardist is Michele Luppi, which, if you have time for, you might wanna consider reacting to, as he's an amazing singer and also a vocal coach himself), but it's still sad to see that he can't pull off performances like this anymore.

There are actually two living legends in this performance: David Coverdale (lead vocals) and Glenn Hughes (backing vocals)...

Absolutely, Hughes and Coverdale work very well together on Burn and Mistreated from that '74 Cal Jam concert, sharing vocals, they do compliment each other.

Has there been a reaction to Jorn? I've always thought of him as the lovechild of Dio and Coverdale. And I've seen him live, he is really good.

Hi Beth, when Coverdale goes into that high falsetto scream, he reminds me of Glenn Hughes, when they worked together in Deep Purple, post Gillan and Glover... Have done one on Glenn Hughes yet? Loving your explanations of shape, space and placement... cheers (RAR!)

Wow - really interesting. I love Coverdale and have wondered about his voice with the later Whitesnake (this video) as opposed to the early UK member lineup (check Blindman off Ready and Willing). A comparison between Coverdale and Paul Rogers would be fascinating given that they're both from the same part of Britain and similar music genres.

I've never been a fan of Whitesnake, but I have always liked David's voice. Considering his long career and also the surgery, he sounds better now than a lot of young singers in their prime.

NICE!!!! Coverdale is just a legend!! You could do a video on his Deep Purple bandmate Glenn Hughes! His voice is amazing... And while he's getting older, his voice keeps on spot!! Got to watch him live a couple of years ago and even sick as hell he pulled out an outstanding concert! What's unique is his funk mojo on his singing! Here's a suggestion! kzread.info/dash/bejne/pmqFzLhwprGth7w.html
