Whitesnake - Still Of The Night - David Coverdale - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
Most of you know by now that David Coverdale is one of my favorite singers of all-time even though he's not a technically perfect singer.
Who are some of your favorites singers that may not exactly sing with the best technique but whose sound you still love? Let me know in the comments!
I've got David's isolated vocal track from "Still Of The Night" as well as the original instrumental track. By looking at the two together we'll be able to see how much energy the band gave and how it allowed David to be more laid back on the sound.
After we break down the recording, I'm also going to take a stab at the track myself, to show you how quickly we can reduplicate the sound.

The instability in Coverdale's voice is part of what made him a great singer. It made him convincing.

I think even if they had auto tuned his voice or he hit the note precisely it would have sounded too polished and would have lost that raw edge that it has.
it's so funny how when you listen to an isolated track that you really hear the humanity of the artist.

Absolutely, Joseph!
That album was a huge part of my teenage years (Im 50 as I write this in 2022) and I can still listen to that song anytime anywhere. I love the way you break it all down, show us how it's done and the enthusiasm you bring to this. The love and joy you have shines brightly, so happy I found your channel Ken. Absolutely great stuff!!
Joe Elliott said that he was recording down the hall, same studio, as Coverdale, and that Coverdale nailed his performances first take. Joe felt detected. Coverdale is a beast, the real deal.

Ann Wilson once said vocal lessons can train the rock and roll out of your voice. I agree. David sang it perfectly. It doesn’t need vocal perfection or perfect notes.

Yes, David Coverdale is probably one of the most beautiful voices in hard rock music. I've always loved (and love) his powerful bluesy voice! And you Ken is a very nice thing that you also talk about the human / emotional part of a singer as well as, of course, explaining the technical part of certain licks or phrases. Sometimes you seem like a kind of doctor-scientist :-) Ken, thanks so much for your videos and your teachings.

16:10 that's one of Coverdale's many innate talents, absoluty amazing! Great video, one of the best singers in heavy rock music!
This was one of my favorite songs to hear live because I thought it was soooooooo perfected in the studio.... truth be told, on the night I saw them live, David was on fire and he nailed it.. AND, my favorite parts are jumping from compressed to heavy and open.... love listening to you break it down..

At 12:09 I’ve always loved how it sounds like David is slowly climbing through different layers and you can hear it. I like that it isn’t completely even.
yeah man! Coverdale is my fave too. When I listen to the iso track, I hear this kind of masky nasality as it blends with the raspiness. Seems to create a new pocket of resonance back there in the throat that I don't hear in really anyone elses voice. Nice Vid! Thanks!
17:50 it was Sykes, he did all the guitars in the 1987 album, except for the here I go again solo (played by Adrian Vandenberg), he also did all the vocal harmonies, he really is the genious behind this album

Oh man......your vocals are great! I can't hit those high notes. You not only have incredible range, but you also added that attitude which is tough to do. It makes the vocals part of the song (a classic song at that) and not just some cover. Nice.

17:47 No Ken, You're actually right. John Sykes played on that whole 1987 album both rythm and lead guitar, and even the backing vocals. The only thing Adrian recorded was the lead (solo) on Here I Go Again 😁 It would be great if you react to Blue Murder singing JellyRoll in 89 on the Yahoo Serious show. Great performance by Sykes and the whole band!

Also, one thing is worth to mention, is he was 55 on that live show, Axel Rose didnt even get to 49 in good vocal health, and at 49 Axl was absolutely destroyed and couldn't even pitch high, not just little pitch details like Coverdale, this guy is a hero, i think there are not much singers that can reach that age with impecable performances regarding pitch or live vocal flaws.
This was a really great analytical video ! You Sir, have an awesome voice ! The '87 Whitesnake album was a masterpiece - from the production to the album cover - let alone the music ! John Sykes's jaw dropping guitar work and masterful compositions complemented David's incredible vocals - they bounced off each other .They made magic - simply one of the best Rock albums ever made... *What an amazing album- such supreme musicianship* !!! Such a shame that Mr Coverdale later fired the whole band .....🤦

Thats a difficult part of his singing . Its heavy but its very primal soul , breathing ventilation It creates that bestial yet sexy dark sound to it . I use it quite too You find this in Wilson pickett and stuff before him etc... Its tiring to do . As heavy but illusioned Ken point in this . In the earlier album even his phrasing in mid lower range with his breath as he was rawer before 1987 . He became rawer again in 1993

I had to watch this 1. One of the many stories you hear in music lore is how Joe Elliot of Def Leppard was having a hard time getting a vocal down and it was frustrating Mutt Lange. Lange had recently worked with Coverdale who he said was notoriously pitch perfect and did not require a ton of takes to get a great vocal track. Mutt Lange considered Coverdale to be a great singer and loved his pitch. I agree. It's interesting that point out his pitch may not be technically perfect. But every line he sings sounds great and his notes sound like they belong. If I'm honest I'd never noticed that his notes may not be perfect. His voice is just on another level. Great rock singer.

GREATEST ROCK SONG! This vocal performance is amazing! Such a great sound!
Glad to hear these isolated vocals which gives me hope knowing that when I see that I'm not that far off as singing along with fully produced tracks can throw the common person off but hearing the isolated vocal gives insight wish I heard these 20 years ago might have given me more confidence to get on stage and not worry about what people would think. It is all a mental game in the music world for sure.

To get that sound David Coverdale had made a huuuuge amount of workin' since his DP days! Virtually rebuilt his singing style from scratch. Also in this particular song we hear very strong influence of Robert Plant.
I just stumbled upon your channel. I’m a singer but not a vocalist. I often find that I mimic others but I don’t really know my own true voice. Example, Janis was always Janis. Whether going hard (POMH) or “softer” (MABM), it’s always that tone of hers that we instantly know and recognize. I can mimic her and I can (when in “good voice”) Whitney. Watching how you effortlessly recognize each nuance and replicate with your unique sound is enviable. My bad habits (under utilizing my diaphragm and singing from throat) would be my #1 need in a workshop. You are a vocal coach, yes?

"Fun" fact: David Coverdale stated in one of his interviews that he wasn't feeling well when recording his vocal tracks to "Still Of The Night". In fact, he only managed two or three takes (if I remember correctly) before he was about to throw up. So the heavy breathing in the middle gets a whole new meaning. It seems that he really had to take deep breaths in order to keep him "together".
