The term Hair Metal did not exist in the '80s, it was coined in the late 90''s. If you delve deep into the Hair Metal Bands without preconceived biases you will realize very quickly that these were were some of the best musicians to ever lay hands on an instrument. and a microphone. As with any era of music, there was a lot of crap but there were also fantastic bands, songs, and music that are still around today. Whitesnake had been around for 8 years before this album was released. Of course, music is extremely subjective and people will like what they like and vice versa.

There is an older, "original" version of the song, released a few years before. But this one became quite a hit. Whitesnake originated in the 70s, Coverdale briefly was part of Deep Purple before. I never was too big on 80s hair metal/pop-metal myself. But it is played frequently at my place, because my daughter is going through a serious Europe-phase 🙈🙈🙈 I can't really say why, but I blame it on MTV 80s - never, never show it to your kids.

There were two versions of Whitesnake, the one you just listened to, and the earlier blues-rock oriented Whitesnake (1976-1982). In 1983, singer David Coverdale began transforming the band from a bluesy, Deep Purple-influenced sound to a more commercially successful metal sound. David Coverdale replaced Ian Gillan as vocalist for Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976.

Well, if you are going in this direction as a diversion, Whitesnake is not the worse you can try. David Cloverdale is the singer and main song writer and came from Deep Purple where he did some great stuff with Richie Blackmore. Try Still of the Night next. One time lead guitarist John Sykes left and formed his own, harder edged hard rock band called Blue Murder. They were killer on their debut album, try Blue Murder, Valley of the King and Billy. Just my opinion but UFO was better than any hair band by a long shot. Hair metal can be fun and some bands are pretty good, but if you are serious about hard rock and heavy metal in it pure form, with a guitarist better than most anyone else, get back to UFO, a huge influence on Def Leppard. Sorry for the rant, just trying to promote one of the most underrated bands of all time. Thank for playing what you do, Rock On. 😎

UFO's beginning was great with Boogie, Timothy and Prince Kajuku, but Michael Schenker lifted them to the next level, the 5 studio albums and Strangers in the night are all classic albums, you can always listen to them. Later stuff was not really relevant for me anymore, but finally saw them live in 2019 for the very first time. Phil Mogg only remaining founding member, but in good shape for someone his age. Fun fact: the re-release of UFO's Force it (probably as LP) entered the german charts this week somewhere in the 40s or 50s. Better performing re-releases were Metallica - Black album at #1, I'm waiting now for the charts of England, USA, Japan and others. Another great re-release is Marillions Fugazi at #4, can you believe that ?

38 Special 'Hold on Loosely'... Right after 'Here I Go Again' a favorite of mine from, what I liked to call, 'Head-Banger' rock. Metal-Pop, heavy rock, rock ballads, rock anthems... I've also said that it's just Rock n Roll and who cares what it's called! It's just good music! Of course so was Lobo, Jim Croce, Journey, Queen, Heart and Fleetwood Mac... (to name but a few) :)

  • @rudolfbecker4313

    @rudolfbecker4313

YEAH, 38 Special would be another "new genre", having started as some kind of southern rock, having one of the Van Zant brothers as singer, becoming later more radio friendly, discovered them when I was in the USA in 82 for the first time.... and from 38 Special it's a short step to bands like Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot, which are a little heavier, but great music, have seen both bands live here in Germany. Seeing the Molly Hatchet guitar army playing open air at wonderful Loreley Amphitheatre above the river Rhine is a memory I'll never forget, songs like Bounty Hunter, Gator Country, Boogie no more etc etc. Blackfoot's live album Highway Song is also fantastic, Ricky Medlocke (now Lynyrd Skynyrd) is a great guitar player, composer and singer, and the songs, where they had intros of his grandfather Shorty Medlock playing the harp, the banjo and singing (FOX CHASE ! ) are epic

Hi Guys, this was one of two big hits off "1987" the other one was the power ballad "Is this love" which is one of the best you'll ever hear from that genre. Would also recommend "Crying in the Rain" and "Still of the night" which IMO are the most impressive songs on the album. Coverdale vocally was really firing on all cylinders on this album, his range, power and control is unbelievable, and the musicianship was superb. They toured down under in '95 and saw them in Sydney, will never forget it, they played most of the songs from the album, phenomenal concert! Best Wishes

Uh-oh the dreaded hairspray metal bands of the 80's Careful with any open flames, lol. I was like Nick, they were kinda ridiculed by us "real" metal fans. Hair spray bands I remember besides Whitesnake were Autograph, Bon Jovi, Britney Fox, Cinderella, Europe, Great White, Poison, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Vixen, Warrant, Winger, White Lion to name a few. I didn't put Def Leppard, Motley Crue or Scorpions into that category. I did like the video for this song, the beautiful Tawny Kitaen was in it, who recently passed away, R.I.P. Here's the official Whitesnake video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/ia16mrSBfZS1c8o.html In all seriousness they do have catchy songs and admit I do like some of their songs. The one thing I like about your channel, evidence here, is the wide variety of music you guys play. Bring on the hairspray.

Whitesnake rode on the coatsils of Zeppelin. Tried to fill the void that was left after Bonzo died and Zeppelin couldn't continue. You will hear alot of Robert Plant's vocals in David Coverdale. So much so that Jimmy Page worked with him and toured with him.Doing some Zeppelin songs as well as their own material. Here's a couple of 80's bands you can look into.RIOT, MONTROSE,MSG(The Micheal Schenker Group) BOSTON, BE BOP DELUXE. KANSAS, CINDERELLA I'm a new subscriber to your channel. I first heard Led Zeppelin in 1974 at 10 years old. every band that followed were influenced or tried to do what Zeppelin did. And to this day nobody has come close. That's why Led Zeppelin is the greatest band to ever grace the stage. They were then, They are Today, And will forever be the greatest band of all time. There are no bad Zeppelin songs, only timeless masterpieces. No other band can make that claim. I am very fortunate to have been a teenager the 70's and I got to see these great bands live. Scorpions,Priest,MSG,Nugent, Aerosmith,Maiden,Sabbath,Purple, Dio,Ozzy, Disturbed,Rainbow,Floyd, the only band I didn't see was my favorite Led Zeppelin. They sold out in 76 then I had reserved front row tickets for the 1980 US tour. Sadly that was when we lost Bonzo. Keep rocking

It's not back of the car with some beers at all. It's hood of the car with a gratuitously hot girl. Seriously -- earlier Whitesnake. They were a spin-off of Deep Purple; Coverdale sang for Deep Purple; some of the earlier records had Jon Lord on Keys and Ian Paice on drums (both from Deep Purple). The album Live from the Heart of the City has a killer version of "Mistreated".... killing guitars on that, too; a heaveir, bluesier thing altogether than the "hair" period.

Growing up in the 80's I'd have to say Def Leppard was one of my favorite hair glam metal bands. I like them mostly for the guitar playing and harmonies. There was a band call Winger, that I thought the musicianship was really good. Kip Winger was the lead singer and Reb Beach was the lead guitar player. When I heard the song 'Seventeen" I was like holy crap that guy can play guitar. The problem with WInger was they came out when hair bands were on life support. If they had came out a few years earlier they would have gotten more exposure and been more popular. Side note: When Metallica release the official video for "Nothing Else Matters", the picture on the dart board is Kip Winger. This started a feud between the bands. I thought it was in poor taste for Metallica to do that. If you are looking for suggestions for this genre check out Winger. Nick will love the guitars.

If you check out some of their 1989 album Slip Of The Tongue, Steve Vai was the only guitarist, due to Vivian Campbell having left, and other guitarist Adrian Vanderberg being in recovery from surgery. Vai's playing on that album was very identifiable, especially if you are familiar with the way he orchestrated his guitar parts on the 2 David Lee Roth albums. So I saw Whitesnake in order to see Vai, and he did some crazy things live. Later, David Coverdale (who a lot of people thought sounded something like Robert Plant ) got together with Jimmy Page for an album.

HUGE hit at the time - it was everywhere. I was never much of a fan of Whitesnake per se, but still very solid and fun song. I loved heavy metal in the early to mid 80's before I started discovering psych and prog and classic rock. The only band from those days I still listen to very regularly is RUSH. They were a unique band, in that the heavy metal fans LOVED them, but everyone kind of knew they were on a whole other plane of existence. We listened to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and Van Halen and Kiss and Ozzy and Dio and Black Sabbath, etc. Hair metal was a fun more commercial version of all of it - nothing to take super seriously, but it was nice to have some more commercial metal on the airwaves.

Hi NicknLex, as a life long Rush fan I’m loving your reactions 🙏 As others are mentioning, it’s worth becoming familiar with the history of Whitesnake. The original, and in my opinion better version of this song, comes from the 1982 album Saints & Sinners which interestingly is in the thumbnail for your video. David Coverdale was the lead singer for Deep Purple and formed Whitesnake after DP split up. The early Whitesnake albums have Deep Purple members Ian Paice on drums and Jon Lord on keyboards (e.g. Child In Time) along with two fantastic rock/blues guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody and bassist Neil Murray. This, to a lot of Whitesnake fans, was the classic lineup that was captured so well on one of the best live rock albums of all time “Live…In The Heart Of The City”. It would be brilliant to see you react to Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues from this album, or the studio recording on Lovehunter. Failing that, your reaction to Marathon, Mission or Animate by Rush would be fantastic! 🤞😃 Hope this has been of interest in providing a bit more background, cheers from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

I went through a phase where (mid-late 80's) this was a listenable option. It doesn't do much for me now. I mean it's OK, part of the soundtrack of my life. David Coverdale (the singer) was with Deep Purple for a while. There are a couple by this band I like better. Very radio friendly. Iconic video for this with the model Tawny Kitaen draped across the hood of car. She died recently, in her 50's.

Power ballads. Whitesnake are a hard rock band formed in London in 1978. The group was originally put together as the backing band for singer David Coverdale, who had recently left Deep Purple. Though the band quickly developed into their own entity, Coverdale is the only constant member throughout their history. Whitesnake enjoyed much success in the UK, Europe and Japan through their early years.

*They have an interesting history . . .* They started with David Coverdale and "Jon Lord", the Keyboardist for Deep Purple, who left before this album. But they started off as a Hard Rock Blues band in 1978. Its an era that I need to look more into very soon, as I've always known about them, but didn't get into for whatever reason. The Album before this one was "Slide it In", which featured the last guitarist for Thin Lizzy; "John Sykes" and would be my 1st time hearing him. He does a tremendous job on this album, and really makes his Les Paul sound like a monster. Sykes also played on the album with "Here I go Again" which was just called "Whitesnake" as it was their New Era of the band, that was trying to market themselves to the more Glamm Rock/Metal audience (btw - you have the wrong cover guys, which is "Saints and Sinners" from 1982 :p. The "Whitesnake" album cover was created by "Hugh Syme" of Rush fame. Edit: Ah I see that this was a "remake" of an older track off S&S ;). Sykes played all the tracks, but he was fired from the band, and Adrian Vandenburg (of the Swedish Hard Rock/Metal band "Vandenburg") and Vivian Campbell (of the 1st 3 "Dio" albums, and later joined Def Leppard) became the guitarists that were featured in the various videos and on the Tour. The track that is my fave on this album is "In the Still of the Night", as far as I'm concerned its a "Metal" track, interesting Riffs and tempo-changes. No signs of Glamm for me, only when you watch the video :p. From "Slide it In", I HUGELY recommend: "Love Ain't No Stranger", gorgeous track! Vic Provost is right about Syke's own band and debut album, "Blue Murder". Its Hard Rock/Heavy Metal with progressive tinges, but NOT "Hair Metal/Glamm Metal" (I don't think the word "Metal" enters into that genre :p). The writing is incredible, the musicianship TREMENDOUS! With Carmine Appice on Drums (from "Vanilla Fudge" and Jeff Beck's early albums), an incredible Fretless Bassist Tony Franklin, and Sykes playing Guitar and on Vocals. His guitar playing is FEROCIOUS! The Riffs, the soloing, and his "Finger Bending/Tremolo" is outrageous, I thought he was using a tremolo bar! Especially when he "bends" his pinch harmonics, I was floored to see him do that live on video! He has a great voice as well. The album was Produced by "Bob Rock" (who would later produce Metallica's "Black" album) so the album sound is as perfect as could be. The 1st single "Valley of the Kings" is very proggy, and has that Arabic/Egyptian vibe. But the harder edged songs really take the cake, especially this one LIVE: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKSjt6tqn8Wuj7A.html I wish I still had my video of this episode, it was in stereo, and lost it with TONS of other shows and bands (stay for all the "false endings"). Just ignore Tony's pants and haircut :p (I've heard that he was a Bass teacher and a SUPER nice guy :). His 2nd album sadly was not on par with this album, and MANY years later "Mike Portnoy" tried to start a Metal band with him, but apparently Sykes didn't have _discipline_ to sit, write and produce an album like Mike :/. *Okay, sorry, I'm going to be a drag now (people will now start pelting me with rocks and garbage).* I have to admit . . . I was (especially back then) and still am NOT a fan of so called "Hair Metal" or Glamm bands (except for the inventors; "The Sweet"), but many bands were called that who were really just "Metal" or Heavy Rock bands, like; Dokken, Y&T, Badlands, Tora Tora, The Scorpions and a few others. But Dokken and Y&T let themselves be a bit influenced by their labels to sound more "Radio Friendly" which was a shame. The LAST Scorpions album I liked, was my 1st time hearing them; "Animal Magnetism" (and a few tracks on "Blackout"), but I went backwards in their catalogue for the "Uli Jon Roth" era. Def Leppard's 1st 3 albums are classic! Whitesnake was on another level of Glamm though, but the other bands that were HUGE were too damn cheesy for me and my friends . . . We HATED that stuff :P. I'm sorry, I was into soo many Thrash bands, the bands that were progressing, and Heavy Metal bands (and those bands that were pre-cursors to Prog Metal). I still can't get into the _other_ bands in this genre, it was everything that was the antithesis of "Metal" for me (sorry folks). To me it was repellant as most (not all) 1980's Pop/Top 40 muzak :P. Nick! Sorry haha! . . . I don't want to base my Metal on the tastes of my Grand Mother :D Metal was meant to piss-off people and scare them to death :p It weeded-out the weak. I'll take noodle salad though ;)! "Fates Warning" wrote a song of what I felt at that time (1986), and when I didn't even _know_ about them till years later!: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iI5s0M2ladfccto.html "Bedroom mirrors do tell who's the fairest of them all Limelight silhouette transparent attic walls Dancing shadows cascade paper dolls Wailing ghost guitars send in the clowns Send in the clowns! Painted plastic faces stealing mommies make up Masque the false gods with mannequin smiles Primadonnas play upon their pedestals of fame Unborn girls false façade illegitimate child I won't play your game illegitimate child! Searching for a name! Blasphemous black bible bias you betray Bigotry Slay the hydra pretty fair maidens spread Their leprosy Hungry children feed from hype of Perpetual ego's I slay the hydra, burn the talisman Holocaust! Run with the pack illegitimate child The unborn wench at war Tears in his eyes she became a bride Wedlock to a whore! Shatter the dream the tangerine dream Bow to kings not the queens Go back where you reign To your domain The Valley of the Dolls! Bow to kings of yesterday They have given you wings to fly away What have the phantom queens but deceived you Armies of shadows climbing Silvery mountains lining molten and ask kiss my... Camouflage the battle scars With oxyten and Maybelline Cloning the hero's in hype magazines! Pirates of underground Lightning the speed of sound You will prevail! - Excerpt of "Valley of the Dolls" (which I presume was in reference to the Hollywood "Valley" or Hollywood's "Sunset Strip" where all the clubs catered to anyone that called themselves _Glamm Metal_ and the like). But guys, that was fun. Yes, I can totally see why the _genre_ was popular, and people thought it was fun, and look back on it as nostalgia. But I STILL listen to all those Metal bands that I was into back _then_ because it had gravitas, it had longevity, and they were writing "Albums", not Hit Singles and they had something to say. A lot of the time they were singing about things I was interested in (history, fantasy, self-introspection, philosophy, sci-fi, etc.). I was a bit of an outcast (think Rush "Subdivisions"), so I wasn't going to be invited to parties and getting drunk with the popular kids ("Dazed and Confused" anyone?) :p. - I hope I didn't ruin the party everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed N&L reaction nevertheless! Metal . . . kzread.info/dash/bejne/h4OrlZWriNHges4.html \m/

@@mvunit3 Fates warning and me is a sad story: I once had won tickets for the Rockhard Festival, 2 day open air. The first day my best friend went with me, for the second day I thought it's a good chance to introduce my son, age 12 at that time, to concerts. He already liked rock and metal, but the live music was a bit too much for him at that time, so we broke up and left before the headliner, Fates Warning. That was in 2006 and since I didn't really know them then .. which came later .. I was not so sad at this time, especially since the tickets were free .....I never made it to another FW concert, probably because they are only 2nd row in my progmetal list of favourite bands. In 2008 we started a second try at the Graspop Metal Meeting, had a great time with Iron Maiden headlining ... many concerts together after that, including WACKEN in 2011 ! Year after year Wacken sold out, so they didn't have to have the most exiting line up, but Graspop in Belgium, only 120 KM from my house, did much better, so it became our favourite festival ... saw many great bands there and hope for more in 2022 and later

Hi, yea, love Whitesnake. Their albums in the 80's had tracks that contained commercial singles that they released to get into the singles charts, as well as what we called album tracks to satisfy the more hardcore metal fans. Many rock groups began releasing singles from their albums. Led Zeppelin backed away from this. David Coverdale joined Deep Purple after Ian Gillan left and their 1st album as Deep Purple; mark 3 with "Burn" basically hit the stratosphere. An incredible album. Later still, Coverdale did an album with Jimmy Page called simply - "Coverdale/Page" and is a corker of an album. Whitesnake are still going strong having released a new studio album recently last year.... This track ? Is there a video ? .... Ohhhh yesss there is a video ! ! ! Lol - They made a few, very famous videos because of it's content...inc' his girlfriend at the time. Nuff said. Lol Great reaction....Now go watch the video. Lol X
