Vocal Coach Reacts To Deep Purple - Glenn Hughes - David Coverdale -
Are you ready for the loudest band in the WORLD?
Deep Purple is recognized by The Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s “loudest band.” In 1972 the band played a show at the London Rainbow Theatre and ROCKED so hard that their sound reached an incredible 117 decibels. Three people were knocked unconscious as a result of the musical onslaught!
The band is considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock although their musical approach changed over the years. They started off more as a progressive rock band and then shifted to a heavier sound in 1970.
The band has recorded 20 studio albums and have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
They along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies".
The band has featured some incredible musicians over the years including the great David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. They have had several line-up changes along with an eight-year hiatus. The line-ups from 1968-1976 are commonly labelled Mark I, II, III and IV. In total, the band has had 14 different members through the years.
Today I’ll be reacting to 2 performances featuring both Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale.

The more you look, the more you will see. Singing gets a lot better when you know the truth about what works and what does not work. There is so much misinformation being sold on the internet these days. No wonder people are so skeptical. They should be. Buyers beware. Anybody can call themselves a "vocal coach" and even look right at the camera with a straight face and tell you about how many fake views and fake subscribers they BOUGHT. JUST LISTEN TO THEM SINGING REALLY CHALLENGING SONGS and judge them. What's that? You can't find any examples of that? Hmmm. I wonder what that means? Could it be that they can't do it, and that they can't teach you anything? Except that you got robbed. Buyers beware of slick ads with methods that sound too good to be true. Do your homework. Find proof. The PROOF is in the SINGING!

Rock and roll fantasy number I don't know what since Phil mogg of UFO Fame is retiring perhaps Glenn Hughes could join the legendary UFO
It always amazes me how smoothly Glenn switches from singing effortlessly to his turbo voice ( as he calls it) to high screams - and back. This guy is 68 and still performs like that, simultaniously playing bass. Can't wait to see him in a couple of weeks here in Germany.
I've been listening to Deep Purple since I was a teen. But only heard Mistreated in the last couple of years. No idea how I'd missed it do long. This live performance of Mistreated is phenomenal!

Hughes and Coverdale, of similar age, are two of my favourite voices in rock over the years. While Coverdale lived a relatively healthy life with smoking as his only vice, Glenn Hughes spent decades doing hard drugs and derailing his once blossoming career. Yet, it was Coverdale who lost his voice when he entered his 50s, while Hughes seems unaffected by his formerly destructive lifestyle. He must have unbelievable genes.

Glenn voice is higher and isnt as Heavy and growly and physical than David . Also though Glenn is the exception , Glenn didnt sang and scream Heavy metal related Stuff on exhausting tours as David did in 80's . Plus David went constantly a bit over high in the " geffen " era .

I would say Coverdale lost his voice much earlier .. than his 50's . In his 40's it seemed to go downhill very fast . If you watch him from 1994 and on it was just gone . Glenn on the other hand is just rare and amazing .. he is the only guy from the Deep Purple lineup who could still hit those notes ! in their later years .

Coverdale was more of a natural baritone than Hughes, David tried harder to get to the high range putting strain to his cords. That's the issue. Overall I like to listen to Coverdale more.

Absolutely. Still top notch! I always wonder how Glenn keeps his incredible voice in shape while great singers like Don Dokken, Sammy Hagar, David Coverdale are getting worse with age. Ken, it was Blackmore’s Guitar that drew everybody into Deep Purple. When he started the intro to Mistreated it sent chills up my spine. That Coverdale comes in with such soul only puts icing on the cake.
1 little story to tell, I happened to meet Claude Schnell at Musicians Institute, (Dio’s Keyboard player in records like “last in line” and he also happened to be one of Glenn’s solo career Keyboard players, and he once told me that Dio’s favorite singer (if not one of them) happened to be Glenn Hughes, he also was a good friend of his.

Glenn Hughes is probably the most underrated singer of the last 40 years. I reckon if he was "just" a front man and didn't play bass, he would be a household name. How he sung those lines and played bass at the same time, I will never know. Great video Ken, really enjoyed it .

Ken ! Thanks for this video! 10:35 - 10:46 actually in the 70s Glenn had more of a clean voice, and not so much use of distortion as we know now. BUT DAMN! Anyway, so F***ing powerful for a 21-22 year old as he was in Cal Jam! BUT yeah, back in trapeze he sang with some distortion and also in ''play me out'', but different, not so perfected. It seems to me that he developed this really powerful distorted technique some time later in the 80s. In Deep Purple I can't remember any moment that he used this same distortion tone we hear now. It started to appear from ''Hughes/Thrall'' and ''Seventh Star'' albums and on. But the AMAZING thing, is that, his voice didn't actually change and he in fact, added MORE to his voice!! keeping both this clean young voice from the deep purple era plus this more-matured-distorted voice! Whoever wants to know Glenn's work at his peak, the albums ''Feel'' and ''Addiction'' are AMAZING! work of a vocal master! Specially ''Feel'' where his voice is shown in all its colors! With all respect to Coverdale, everytime Glenn sings in California Jam video, it makes me wish there was only Glenn there! lol Coverdale is great, but Glenn is just too amazing! Coverdale was much more clever to go on with his carrier though. Such a shame that Glenn wasted almost all the 80s dealing with drug problems. He should be much more recognized and known. Much more! huge talent!
"Mistreated" is taken from the California jam concert. In fact it isnt just early in Coverdales career.. it was his first performance live with Deep Purple. Could explain why he seemed to be a little nervours here and there. ;)

First off let me say I’ve been a Purple fan for decades and BURN is one of my favorite albums. Glenn’s performance here is stellar!! There are moments where he sounds spot on to the studio recording of the song. And his runs are amazing!! David Coverdale, unfortunately is a shell of his former self. This California Jam performance was, in my opinion, very good. I was lucky enough to see Coverdale with the Deep Purple version of Whitesnake (Lord and Paice) and he sounded amazing. A few years ago I saw the revamped version of Whitesnake and sadly his voice was shot. Thanks for the reaction video!! And for the record, you would have been a good fit for Blackmores Rainbow!!
