Coverdale can still sing decent though, Whitesnakes is still a great experience, it is not like he has became as bad as Axel Rose or Vince Neil.

Hammond organ was one of the fundamental instruments of early metal and Jon Lord was a beast with it. (See: Child In Time)

Deep purple is an amazing band! So much rock history! Child in Time is their best song. Check out the live version of that track. The crowd just sits expressionless, as if they know they are hearing greatness but their puny minds won’t let them process it

Glenn Hughes is easily one of the greatest voices of the genre. With this line up of Deep Purple I have always found humor in the fact that David Coverdale's performances are good, but then Glenn Hughes opens his mouth and it's the voice of a rock GOD! Upstaged is right, I was absolutely delighted to hear someone else basically echo that long held opinion.

Glen is like old wine. Sounds the same 50 years after!! Gillan was on another level from all the others early 70s. He destroyed his voice screaming his @ss with Black Sabbath

Glenn Hughes is a Soul singer at heart. Anyone who has listened to his brilliant album, Play Me Out, can attest to that. DC was great, but Glenn’s solo stuff is beyond amazing. Truth be told, when Glenn sings Purple songs-check out his upcoming Burn 50th tour-he leaves the originals with DC in the shade of his flowing locks. Glenn Hughes’ lack of presence in the wider community is a travesty. A lovely day to all. 🤞🤞

Rene - bought the LP in 77, and wasn't ready for that sound at the time. Happy to play it now, as he's doing some great stuff. 'Addiction' and 'Resonance' are brilliant pieces of work too :-)

@@20kingsize Yes, I think P.M.O. confused many people at the time, expecting it to be a Rock record. It's beautiful, soulful and full of just incredible songs, but a Rock album it isn't. Compare it to Northwinds by DC--which has got some great stuff on it--and you can see how far ahead of its time it really was. Great day to you, mate.

In his biography, Glenn Hughes, the singing bass player (and one of my favorite performers to see live ) is coked out of his freaking skull during this concert. He is sober today. And can still sing like that...only better

@@Ninang363 Ha ha ha ! I read in Tony Iommis biography that Black Sabbath had more coke than Scarface, so it was crazy times back then. Thes anecdotes are kind of funny in a cartoonish way but i seriously hate drugs and have never used them or even alcohol and never will.

David Coverdale had been working in a clothes shop in Redcar until Deep Purple pulled him out of obscurity to replace Ian Gillan whereas Glenn Hughes was a seasoned pro with his band Trapeze. Imagine being a nobody and then your at the Cal Jam in 74 in front of 250-400k fans And Glenn Hughes still has the voice in 2023 and touring songs from this era in October. He's awesome

Deep Purple’s ‘In Rock’ album is one of the reasons I grew into metal. During weekends when my parents were still sleeping I went through my dads record collection and I gave that album quite a few times a spin (along with The Who, Status Quo, Meat Loaf and a few other rock bands). The stage in this video overflows with talent. I prefer the Mark II line up though. Must say, every time I hear a Hammond I’m reminded of John Lord. He’s synonymous for me to the Hammond sound. Thank you for reacting to this great band!

The best hard rock band all time

As long as Ritchie was in the band it was Deep Purple,. The later stuff is just retirement issues. I love when Ritchie told Glenn Hughes; "Shut the fuck up and play the bass" when he was having issues not being the main lead singer (which was Coverdale).

2 songs I wanna come up with, here: (Jon Lord is one of my greatest heroes. His sound is unique. Btw: the reason he's rocking the organ is 'cause of it's construction: the coils are in some distance from the magnets (like in a loudspeaker, but not as strictly held in place), so shaking the whole construction is causin a distortion from the "clear" sound. That is, was he is going for, here.) From his later (solo) work: "one from the meadow", featuring Sam Brown as a singer. And as for wild performance, something completely different: "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. (I've been dancing to it! It was played on almost every party, back then and from then on. Like D'yer mak'er from Led Zeppelin. Some songs are just timeless.) Greetings from the far north of Germany!

When Ian Gillan left Deep Purple, they replaced him with two amazing lead vocalists. Although I never saw the two of them in Deep Purple, I saw them with other bands. I saw Glenn Hughes in the early 80s when he was briefly the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath. That was pretty amazing! When you hit Deep Purple again, please take a listen to Child in Time. The live version of this song is mind blowing. Take a look at a live video performance if you can.

I saw the band perform Child in Time on a couple of different occasions. It was really amazing to hear it performed live.

Seen purple several times always great , saw Hughes with the Dead Daisies in 2021 and he can still sing like that quite amazing fantastic show

Your spot on about appreciating music more back in the day in the late 70s early 80s records were are treasured positions. We spent hours in recovery shops looking at record and listening to them but we could only afford maybe 1 or2 a month. We would go round each other’s houses to listen to each other’s new albums and we would listen to full albums not just a favourite track. I still have and listen to most of them to this day so I guess we got more attached to those albums and appreciated them more for it. Make some time for Deep purple made in Japan full album lights down with your favourite drink one night.

Glenn Hughes was recruited into Deep Purple before David Coverdale. Glenn was the lead singer and bassist for Trapeze, with the late Mel Galley on guitar, and the late Dave Holland on drums. They were a funky rock power trio, and Glenn has occasionally insisted he shouldn't have left Trapeze for Deep Purple. But he thought he'd be singing lead vocals except Ritchie said he wanted someone with a deeper bluesier (manly) voice like Paul Rogers of Free. Ritchie told Glenn they'd offered Paul the lead singer spot, so Glenn agreed just to play bass. Then Paul chose to do Bad Company instead, and David Coverdale, then a complete unknown, was brought in as lead singer and lyricist. Glenn sings co-lead vocals on several songs, although David Coverdale sings Mistreated alone, and Soldier of Fortune from the Stormbringer album alone. I like Deep Purple live, but Cal Jam wasn't their best performance. I never understood why David used the mic stand he uses so awkwardly here when Glenn is using the stand David should be using. And Glenn should be using David's stand. I love Glenn Hughes's voice but he doesn't have the lower bluesier sound David has. Sorry Glenn lovers but his versions of Deep Purple songs these days without David miss David's blusier feel. Is Glenn the voice of rock? Maybe. But David was the voice of blues rock and hair metal for a little while. I like the songs Glenn wrote and sang with Deep Purple like This Time Around. But he's not better than David. Just different. Glenn's primary vocal influence is Stevie Wonder so his voice is in the much higher tenor range. David's is more Bobby Blue Bland so baritone primarily. They sang well together. I think the studio version of Burn is vastly superior to this live version, if only because Glenn hits that high note on Time and then holds it forever rather than screeching it as he does here. Huge difference. But bassists for David Coverdale's band Whitesnake who have played and sung Glenn's parts on their version of Burn? Do the vocal version Glenn does here. Which doesn't do his voice justice. To me. So yes. Deep Purple got two lead vocalists when Ian Gillan left. And when Tommy Bolin stepped in for departed Ritchie Blackmore on Come Taste The Band, they got a third lead vocalist (and Deep Purple played one of Tommy's solo album singles, Wild Dogs, from his Teaser solo album). [Jon Lord was playing a Hammond C-3 keyboard live. He was a bit too brutal live to play a B-3. The late Keith Emerson of Emerson Lake & Palmer also was brutal to his keyboards live and used a C-3 live as well.]

Glenn Hughes auditioned for a spot in the band as a singer. He even got the gig, but then they heard David Coverdale and snapped him up, too. They hadn't planned to have two lead singers in the band, but that's what they got.

Forgive me, but that is nonsense. Firstly, Glenn didn’t audition, the members of Purple all went to see his band Trapeze, where he was bassist/lead singer, to check Glenn out, and invited him to join the band. He was told then that they only wanted him as a bass player as they already had Paul Rodgers on lead vocals, and Glenn agreed to join as long as he could also sing-but, not just the ooh’s and ahh’s, as Jon Lord put it-with Paul. Rodgers dropped out and they, with Glenn, auditioned new singers and DC got the gig. A lovely day to you.

For all the Rock drummers, Ian Paice was the BADDEST of them all! His playing on any Deep Purple records was always impeccable!! This guy was from the same era as Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Carmine Appice, Bill Ward, John Bonham, Keith Moon, etc. etc. but rarely gets the credit, except from REAL DRUMMERS! Honorable mention for me personally, is BOBBY CALDWELL, and PIERRE VAN DER LINDEN

Paice and even John Lord also played in Whitesnake’s pre Hairband lineup with Bernie Marsden and Mickey Moody. Bernie wrote or co-wrote many of Whitesnake’s biggest hits with Coverdale.

The California jam at the Ontario Motor Speedway in 1974 was a great concert! I can't even remember how I got home. I was seriously sunburned, dehydrated and hungover the next day! It was worth it, lots of good music and memories!

Iv'e been on the guest list for two Glenn Hughes gigs, Glasgow 1994 and Edinburgh 2005. Watched his soundcheck in Edinburgh. Glenn's voice never failed him even in his darkest days. What i haven't seen yet in the comments is guitarist Ritchie Blackmore getting his revenge on the promoters ABC TV during the last track. Destroying a camera and blowing up an amp. He was almost blown off the stage by the explosion. Now that was rock n roll.

Burn, Highway Star, Stormbringer - there are so many fantastic Deep Purple songs, yet Smoke on the Water is the only one most people have heard of. It's tragic.

Took two singers to do what Ian Gillan could do and they still couldn't quite get up there like he did. Ian Gillan was always the best voice of Deep Purple IMHO

So.. if you love glenn’s voice… you need to watch “California breed-all falls down”… at an awards show.. he’s in his late 60’s and he still sounds exactly the same if not better than he did in his 20’s… its just him and his guitar player on an acoustic… enjoy!!! Great reaction as always. yeah their most famous song is smoke on the water but my favorite is Child in time very good song . This was my moms favorite band grewing upp so i took her to see them a few years back they were some old dudes with grey hair but they could still rock have a nice day much love peace

Glenn Hughes is a rock treasure. The band Black Country Communion, is a group comprised of Glenn, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham and Derrick Sherinian, where Glenn and Joe both lend their voices to great music. They do a version of Burn, and I do believe if far surpasses this version, this is purely just my opinion. You may want to check that out, Glenn does all the singing in that version. The band Black Country Communion is a great listen all around. I have been listening to Glenn since the early 70's, when he was with the Band Trapeze, he has a golden voice. Thanks for letting me rant.

David Coverdale is my second favorite vocalist/singer (after Elvis), but I am always aware that Glenn Hughes is a pure beast (both as an instrumentalist and as a singer). Even if Glenn doesn't have my love - he has my deepest respect and appreciation.

Glenn Hughes is playing the Burn album in full - live in the UK this year. His voice is still as good.

@Melisa Kelly my personal highlight on the album (for his performance) is in The Temple. It shows his range and power, and how intimate he can sound too. There's an awesome scream at the end too. He was such a powerhouse in the 70s!

To really hear what Gillan can do, try "Child In Time" live from 1970.

This is David Coverdale from the band Whitesnake. The original singer was Ian Gillian. Both can belt out songs

The Stones have sold somewhere around 250 million albums worldwide, this doesn't include the sale of singles which puts them into the stratosphere numbers wise. Also, more people have seen Mick Jagger live than any other human being in the whole of history. which is a bit weird.

Watched this concert on the original broadcast, heard through a (?) 4x3 speaker. Still was incredible. California Jam.

If you would like to follow the the high-pitched singing bassist journey, be sure to seek the one and only Geddy Lee, of RUSH. The 70s-80s years were his prime, though they recorded continously beyond 2010. My favorite aspect of this concert is Ritchie Blackmore acting too cool for the stage.

Agree 100% about the "value" of music. Almost all of the new stuff that comes out on channels like Spotify is not music, It's noice.

Jon Lord paired the Hammond with Marshalls creating a sound he said was all he could do to keep up with Blackmore's sound.

Glen and David were the last of the 70s Deep Purple Mark 3 line up and it was great and far too short lived .. The gestalt Of the 70s was a brew up that has passed away and we all wish it could come back . At least we can see what it was like ..

try Mistreated on the same concert. Personally that time I was Gillan fan, but Coverdale started showing his capabilities with continuous improvement up to 80s

This is a good one , but I think you should have checked out the song , Mistreated , you would enjoy that one a lot more , if you really wanted to hear David Coverdale sing !! Yes , from the same concert , The California Jam 1974 .

Ohhh, this is my favorite Deep Purple song. Also features a pre white snake David Coverdale.

I get your fork in the road analogy but for rock musicians in the 60's and 70's, they grew up listening to Blues, Rock and roll and R&B which informed their music. For instance, most drummers in Britain in the 60's had lessons from Jazz drummers which made them have an appreciation for some swing to their groove, Ian Paice in this video is a great example of that. Those rock musicians coming after are one or two steps from the roots of rock music and often that funky-ness has gone by this point. Also I blame quantising.

Glenn Hughes was in a band called Black Country Communion wih Joe Bonamassa and Jason Bonham. "Man in the Middle" is great.

Agreed Melisa, nothing against David Coverdale, but Glenn Hughes is a mighty vocalist - saw Glenn at a solo gig in a small club, (200-300 people) probably less than 10 years ago, and he played quite a few old Deep Purple songs, as well as stuff from the rest of his career, and man-o-man, what a show - vocals bordering on otherworldly, and bass playing that left my bass playing mate, whom I was there with, completely blown away. I will never forget it, I even bought Glenn's latest solo album at the gig and waited around for him to sign it, not knowing any of the songs on it, simply as a thank you to him, for one of the best nights of live music I have ever experienced (and that is as a former semi-pro singer myself, and having seen more gigs than I could possibly count or even remember). Cheers! For your next Deep Purple review, might I recommend "Child in Time" (either the live on a 1970 BBC TV show, or the studio version, both are great for slightly different reasons, and you can't go wrong with either).

Deep Purple was the best live band in history and Glenn Hughes? One of the best singers ever! His tour of few years ago about old classic Deep Purple was amazing!

I heard Machine Head (album) when I was a lad.. it opened my eyes and I became a life-long guitarist due to it :) Rock on!!!

Another band to check out are Atomic Rooster. with Chris Farlowe as the singer. He was with them between 1972 and 1974. I think he's my favourite singer in this band. He also had a solo hit with Out of Time in 1966, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. I like the version of the song Black Snake by Atomic Rooster live at the BBC, where he appears to be eating a sandwich during the first few bars of the song.

"People like Spotify get to exist" is such a good line.

Glen Hughes is currently doing his own solo shows along with being a member of black Country Communion and the Dead Daisies.

I would say that Coverdale didn't really become a great singer until the early days of Whitesnake. He did two solo albums co written by Whitesnake slide guitar legend Micky Moody entitled, White Snake and Northwinds, from those two albums , I would recommend two songs in particular , firstly, Give me kindness, and secondly, Only my soul. It was with Whitesnake that he really stretched his wings and his voice was magnificent. The original version of Fool for your lovin, is masterful

Bassist Glen Hughes complimented David Coverdale to the point that he became his shadow....He would have been a formidable frontman in ANY band.....new sub here, liking ya so far!

Glen was a singer in his previous band Trapeze but the blend of vocals was what Ritchie wanted. Purple were more soul with this lineup

I'm not sure if this is in any of the other comments but trust me on this: I'm a huge Glenn Hughes fan myself and this probably won't surprise you -- he himself was/is a huge soul and funk music fan. I read in the '70s that he was Stevie Wonder's favorite white singer. His band before Deep Purple was named Trapeze. Purple heard him in that band and recruited him. He has FOUR great soul songs from his days in Trapeze. I will pay you to react to them. I would love to hear you check them out. Here are their titles: "Coast to Coast", "What is a Woman's Role?", "Good Love" and "Will Our Love End?". Doing the original studio versions is without doubt the way to go with them. And there are 2 Deep Purple songs that are beautiful soul tunes that feature Glenn -- "This Time Around" and "Holy Man" -- again the original studio versions are best. One of my favorite videos! Glenn Hughes shines here (and I think he's a much better vocalist than Coverdale). Don't forget Ian Paice...he keeps things in check brilliantly! Glover is my favorite bassist, and hate how Blackmore fired him, then HIRED him to play in Rainbow.

Glenn Hughes was A) a great bass player, B) could have been a lead singer in his own right, and C) a fantastic stage performer. I watched this "California Jam" as it was portrayed live on TV in the 70's. I also saw Deep Purple live at the Portland Colosseum in 1974. I went there to stand at Blackmore's feet and learn some neo classical techniques.

Glenn's 10th solo album (2005) is called Soul Mover. Despite playing in rock bands, his roots (and possibly true love) is soul.

If you ask me.. Glenn Hughes is the better singer. But I’m so fortunate to have enjoyed both of them and the career’s the two carved out. Glenn did have a few bumps in the road though.

Glenn Hughes also put out a Christmas album quite a few years ago. It might be a little over the top at times but it is like none you’ve ever heard. It was posted on KZread and probably still is. You’ll have to give it a listen at the end of the year.

David Coverdale (singer here) formed Whitesnake...you need to react the Whiternake versión from "Burn" from their "The Purple Album" (Deep Purple covers) 41 years ago.... from 2015!

As a soul singer it's not surprising you would gravitate to Glenn. He gives stevie wonder as his biggest idol and influence, and even has a solo album called "songs in the key of rock" 😂 Glenn Hughes was a lead singer in his own band before he joined purple. Some of the band wanted him to be their only singer, while others wanted a different vocal sound, hence the compromise of having both of them, and reputedly Glenn's contract stating he had to have "equal mic time", not just be the bass player. Glenn is still touring now, and has honestly kept his voice in better shape than any of his contemporaries. He's in the uk later this year, you really, really should see him.

Glenn is a soul singer ..... Stevie Wonder said that Glenn was his favourite. Most importantly, he's one of the only singers who was active 50+ years ago who is still great. (also sidenote He was the vocalist of Black Sabbath for a short time - 1 album and about 5 shows)
