Part of that keyboard solo where Jon Lord makes it sound like a harpsicord is so Bach-inspired it's not even funny. People don't realize how much Blackmore and Lord were inspired by classical music, especially JS Bach. Then you throw in jazz and the blues, and you have a recipe for rock near-perfection. Deep Purple was THE SHIT!

Deep Purple (who I saw live in '72) had several advantages over their contemporaries. First: they were the first band I ever saw who were better LIVE than in the studio. Good Gawd can they dial it up. Then they had Ian Paice, maybe one of the best drummers who ever lived. Jon Lord on the Hammond B-3 organ, and nobody disputes him as the KING of that instrument. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar... the father of neo-classical shredding. And finally, those amazing vocals from David Coverdale.

Everyone in the band, on this song, is on fire...and I agree that Ian Paice's fills are amazing. The one thing I remember when this song first came out was that the rhythm guitarist in my band used to say " no bands in our town are doing Burn as a cover, cause it's too hard to learn and perform well" For the most part I think he was right, we never saw that song ever covered in the '70s.

The master guitarrist Ritchie Blackmore and Hammond B3 keyboardist Jon Lord (R.I.P.) at the top of their game. This one was the opening song for that Jam concert. Ian Paice's drumming at his peak. They were the original founder members of Deep Purple back in 1968/69. The lead vocal David Coverdale and bassist Glenn Hughes came in replacement of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover as well. Really DP should be spoken about on the same vein as Sabbath and Zeppelin. In fact I would say DP had far more bangers and less duds on their albums. Each one a musical master, and with Richie Blackmore one of the GOATs of guitar.

Great reaction and choice of song! The song that gave David Coverdale the job as new lead vocalist in Deep Purple after Ian Gillian is from that this same album. A song called "Mistreated". There are several great live versions of that song on YT. Both with Coverdales more bluesy approach, and later with Ronnie James Dios more theatrical masteries (when Ritchie formed Rainbow). But the original is on this record, just as the fantastic title song you just reacted to.

Nice to see music has no color barriers. If they can appreciate a band I’ve listened to since the 70s then I can appreciate the music Black musicians have contributed too. More into EarthWind and Fire, old school jazz, early rap and hip hop. Keep up the good work B&L.
