What Makes This Singer Great? Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes has been called "The Voice Of Rock" and he's definitely up there when it comes to my favorite male rock vocalists.
In addition to rock, Glenn has a sassy, soulful blues side and he makes really great use of pocket phrasing.
Also known for his great range, Glenn is able to really spread his sound in almost a raised laryngeal position.
As an accomplished bass player too, his instrumentalist background has allowed him to translate that same level of commitment to his singing.
For today's video I'll be looking at a small montage of his performances as we discuss all the things that made him great including his epic screams.
I'd love to hear your thoughts too so please be sure to contribute to the discussion by telling me what you think makes Glenn unique!

Fantastic to see Glenn getting long overdue praise. | love his work at the helm of Black Sabbath with Seventh Star - "Danger Zone", "No Stranger to Love" and "Heart Like a Wheel" are phenomenal tracks. The bootleg 8th Star and DEP sessions are also brilliant, not to forget 2005's Fused album. Allegedly Stevie Wonder was so impressed with Glenn's range, he was surprised to hear he was a white guy.

Even tho it is just a promotional thing I agree that Glenn Hughes is “The Voice of Rock”. At least the most complete rock singer I have ever heard. The songs featured in this video are mostly “pyrotechnic” kind , in which Hughes repeats the trick of those high pitched falsettos that crowds tend to celebrate. But I recommend checking out his vocals for songs like “Messin’ with the kid” (L.A. Blues authority), “Counting on your love” (John Norum’s “Face the truth” album), “Rebellion” (from Anya rock opera), “Cry of the brave” (from George Lynch’s “Sacred Groove”) or “Save me tonight” from his own album “Feel” just to mention a few. Hughes singing is soulful, rich, complex, with lots of nuances. These things make him a singer “Like no other” 😁 Thanks for the video! All the best!

Thank you Ken. I think the most important thing about Glenn is his preservation of the voice (especially high notes) no matter how old is he. That's why he wins over almost all guys from the classic hard rock era. Fantastic guy who admits that he's still getting vocal lessons. And Ken - 2:53 - really amazing impersonation of "a modern rock singer". Great sense of humour!

Hey Ken! Great series! I love Glenn's voice...the power, the range, and often overlooked, the expression. You mentioned Glenn as part of Black Country Communion. I heard an interview where Glenn said he never wanted to be in another band once he helped form BCC. He said it was perfection. You also mentioned Joe Bonamassa trying to emulate Glenn. They had some killer vocals together in a few songs in BCC. "Song of Yesterday" and "Sweet Sister Jane" are two great examples of how they trade off vocals and build off each other's energy. Great musicianship as well!! Glenn did an all blues album back in the day as well that is absolutely amazing! I doubt I'll ever achieve it here, so when I die and go to heaven, I hope God gives me a voice so I can sing like Glenn Hughes!

Wow! Glenn is amazing!! He's got the tone, the placement, the drive.. but for me, my favorite thing about him is this funky, soul, bluesy mojo he's got... My favorite exemple is BCC's live version of Cold... He nails it, and puts in a lot of flavor to the song (it was already a great song, but live it grows a lot, mainly because of Glenn's interpretation!) Nice to see you getting along and singing those parts! It seems a little less impossible!!

I almost cried when I noticed you including a track from the Live in Australia acoustic set but missed out the perfect track for vocal analysis where the voice is most raw. That being I found a Woman. I'd also have to slightly disagree on him being first and foremost a blues singer. That influence and styling that comes so natural to him is more soul/funk. Although blues originated from pretty much the same culture so it ain't far off. However, while he may mostly sit in those genres vocally he's so insanely talented he can sing pretty much anything. Rock, Blues, Metal, Power Ballads (Check out "Save Me Tonight". Eat your heart out Michael Bolton. Best. Male. Power Ballad. Performance. Ever.) Even dance when you consider he featured on an alternate version of KLF's "What Time is Love" titled "(America) What Time is Love". One of a kind.

2:40 modern rock singers are going for loud chest resonance. My theory is they use a lot of air and. Don't go bright , it is more rounded very full like a classical baritone . But classical baritones are not really trained to go above Bb 4 to C5 ...C above middle C . They actually restrict the air with the larynx and keep to in the chest . the effect that has on the throat is a lot of tension they get so used to having the throat clenched like a fist , they don't realize upper resonance is in the roof of the mouth and in the eye brow . the throat has to be open to go up to the scull . The booming baritone sound technique will never work for range . Tennors who sing lower register are actually brightening the tone . Not rounding loudly, like a Bass Baritone Although the rounded baritone resonance has it's place . That is the nice sound you hear in crooning, barber shop, and non secular...Church Hymns . And early Broadway where the had No Microphones . church singers also had ZERO mics

Glenn Hughes is one of the few here I'm not familiar with, so first listen for me. And holy crap, his voice is phenomenal! Really blew me away. I keep hearing Iron Maiden, so I'm guessing they might've taken influence from him. Also like how funky he is. This was pretty kickass! 😎 I wanna make a suggestion for another video, Robert Lamm. I like that you said that it is hard to sing and play bass at the same time! Glenn is great that way! I agree and one of my favourite musicians of all-time is Geddy Lee of Rush whom sings, plays bass, Plays keyboards with his feet! So that just confirms it for me that he is one of the greatest bassists & singers of all-time! He’s not necessarily recognized for his vocal abilities the way he is for his bass playing though! I do love his voice though and Glenn's is awesome too!

Glenn himself - and Ritchie Blackmore - has stated that Glenn is a soul brother and that it brought tensions during the "Stormbringer" era. Glenn also is a guest singer on dance group KLF's single "What Time Is Love". :) I wonder if that unison was a spark of the moment, judging by the guitarist's reaction. :)
