Try Live From Daryl's House where he does songs with different artists to show how quickly they do a song mix.

I met Daryl around 1977, a few years after "Abandoned Luncheonette"was released...(the luncheonette was in my area too). ...My friend knew him very well so he came over to his home one day....There were 3 of us sitting around on the floor with Daryl just talking and having an everday conversation. He stayed and visited for a couple hours......He was so nice and I also remember how thin he was at that time too. Very nice time....He truly had a phenomenal voice!

Hello, Ms Roars. I'm Japanese. Thanks for your nice analysis of Hall & Oates' old good song. 1980s, they were very famous in Japan, especially young Japanese women liked them very much. My most favorite Hall & Oates' song is 'Wait for me'.

There are very good reasons why Hall and Oats are still the most successful duo of all time and this is my favorite of all their great songs.

Hall & Oates were possibly the most successful mainstream music duo of the late 70's/early 80's with dozens of hit songs to their name. You should definitely do a deep dive into their catalogue. You also owe it to yourself to go down the rabbit hole of "Live From Daryl's House" episodes where the who's who of artists visit Daryl Hall's Club in upstate NY and jam with his house band for a while...he's been doing that since 2007 and there are some amazing performances (check out Joe Walsh's visit in particular).

Depending on the day either "She's Gone" or "Sara Smile" is my favorite song by these guys. Today it's "She's Gone". Listen to the beautiful studio version of "Sara Smile".

A great song, a great band. It sounds as fresh today as it did nearly 50 years back!

Always been my favourite Hall & Oates song and proof of what great singers they both were and incredible writers.

I literally grew up listening to Hall & Oates. They are from the Philadelphia, Pa. area are were tabbed by DJs as "Blue Eyed Soul". They had hit after hit after hit. They later parted ways. Both are still in the music industry. Take care....

@@joer1678 The Righteous Brothers were indeed the FIRST to be known as "Blue Eyed Soul" but the term is generic and was applied to many other white artists including Hall & Oates. Take care...

Yes, Old Grey Whistle Test was BBC's great music show. When I was a teenager, sometimes I liked to watch them on NHK's program in Japan. Of course, not live shows in Japan. My best favorite program was Blondie's live show. I was in love with young Debbie Hurry.

Always listen to Hall and Oates for the good memories.

Oates is rarely given his due, either as a singer or creative contributor... Always hoped to hear more songs with him singing lead.

Sound of my teens! I grew up in Philly in the 70s. Pure blue-eyed soul, influenced by the Philadelphia soul groups of the 60s and 70s. From my hometown! Please look at some of their other songs from this era, like Sara Smile. Also, the studio version of She's Gone has a very different, but wonderful vibe. Also, check out "Live From Daryl's House", which is on youtube. Many, many famous folk do a jam session with Daryl Hall, and there are some spine tingling moments in there! Like Todd Rundgren, among others.

Early Hall & Oates (pre-MTV) put out some awesome music.

Daryl Hall was playing the basic accompaniment part on a Wurlitzer electric piano Beth. The solo was played on a Mini Moog synthesizer.

I Can't Go for That and Private Eyes are absolutely bangers, listen to those Hall & Oates songs

Hard to believe that you weren't familiar with the most popular duo in popular music history.

The BBC concentrates on playing UK artists, and a lot of folks across the pond have never heard many staples of American radio. I made friends with a middle-aged gal from Norwich and I was constantly shocked at what she hadn't heard.

It's not hard at all to believe someone hasn't heard of you've heard of. Also, while Hall & Oates were extremely successful here ("the most popular duo in music history" comes from the band's own website), they were far less successful in the UK. Still a massive hit over there, but far fewer singles and albums made the charts. I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes people have a different experience of the world than you do.

Studio version is best

So great to see these guys properly appreciated. This was a live performance!! Nothing but hard work and huge talent. A golden musical era . Nothing like the easy road to autotune and backtracking hip hop fame. Daryl on tour now with Elvis Costello and John also in lower scale arenas with his own fine band. Daryl lost his high octave but still has the Philly soul going on. Hope they continue to inspire !!

Yes! Much as I love ya Beth, that's definitely no Whirley - it's a MiniMoog synthesizer that's playing the "sax solo" from the studio record.

Old Grey Whistle Test, sadly missed and the greatest launch pad in the UK for great artists (and I mean A-Z) as well as the greatest into to music lovers...all pre-internet of course and mostly truly live. Fantastic!

Thanks Beth! As always, pointing out details that I totally miss. My first time hearing this sung live, rather more intricate than what I remember the studio/radio-play version being. And always fun to watch musicians ply their craft.

Man, several years ago Hall & Oates played a concert at a smallish nearby outdoor venue. It ended up being a perfect July night for my wife and I (she is the biggest Hall & Oates fan and got me to appreciate them). Nothing fancy, just amazingly great music and one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Sad to hear they have now had a serious falling out, but they are just two amazing musicians.

One of my favorite groups in the 70's.

Beth- Daryl Hall had a TV show from his home studio called Live From Daryl’s House about ten years ago. Old Daryl still has it!!! A different guest artist every week jamming with Daryl and his band. It’s phenomenal live music television. It’s an incredible rabbit hole. I recommend the episode with guest CEELO Green. It deserved a Grammy. “ I Can’t Go for That” and “ F*** You”.

I enjoyed your analysis of this wonderful song. It has a particular resonance for me, which I shall relate shortly. I have to say that your appraisal has increased my enjoyment of this timeless classic many fold. Your description of how a Wurlitzer or a Fender Rhodes electric piano works is spot in. However, the instrument being played in that section of the piece is a Mini Moog analogue synthesiser. Why does this song resonate so strongly for me? In 2013 my wife gave birth to our beautiful baby girl Lily. She was born with a rare genetic defect and only lived for 2 months. With great support from the NHS we took her home and took care of her around the clock. My wife and I were determined to give her as much of a life as we could. Through the long dark watches of the night I read poetry to her, sections of novels - and played her music. Every track I would have wanted her to know and appreciate if she could have grown to be a woman. This was one of the prominent tracks. After Lily died, the lyrics became incredibly important and for me were no longer about a romantic break up. They were about the loss of my daughter. "She's gone, She's gone, Oh I, I've got to learn how to face it, Shes gone, Shes gone, Oh I, I'd pay the devil to replace her...

Great memories from the 80's when I was a young teenager living on my own in a new country and a new language. Thank you Beth!!!

Love your insight. I think the keyboard section was originally a sax solo which is even better. This song actually is typical of their catalo, not really a change. They are Philly Blues, the songs you cited of theirs are more ‘pop’ than most. Sara smile is a personal favorite and is why I named my girl that.

This is by far one of the most sensual songs not only of this duo but of all the music that was made in the 80s, it is so exquisitely captivating that it makes you want to listen to it while you are making love. Hall & Oates certainly went far with this topic.

Daryl Hall is just an insanely great singer. Look at some of his videos in the past 15 years from Live From Daryl’s House- here is a man who has never stoped playing and learning his entire life and you can see him getting even better when you thought I would be impossible for that to happen. They were the first concert I ever saw in 1982. I was so lucky to have them as the soundtrack of a good portion of my life.

I was seemingly a fan of Hall & Oates as a kid; my mother’s said I knew some of their song titles. Quite a few years before I truly grasped music. And funny enough, but I never heard this tune until I was an adult. Now it’s my favorite track by them.

Glad you felt that a lot of this was improvised, you are correct! Some melody changes and riffing here. This was a great Live performance, but you might want to listen to the studio version as well, which is perfection. This is my favorite song by them!

When Hall & Oates came to Newcastle (Australia) in the early 80's, I had arguably one of the best seats in the Civic Theatre. 20-30 feet above the stage, sat in a chair that was gaffe taped to the flys with a purple follow spot that I had to keep trained on Jon Oates (have you any idea how hard it is to see a purple follow spot?). I was one up on my younger brother in that while we were both up there with follow spots, at least my chair had a seat belt.

When it was released in '73 it only reached #60 (in the US). After "Sara Smile" became a hit in '76, they re-released it and it went to "#7.

Im so glad you found this song! One of my favorites by this duo. Darryl Hall is right up there with George Michael and others as a GREAT male singer of the 20th century.

Great song and so glad John Oates' singing was highlighted...he really does have a great voice. Unfortunately their relationship is kaput now....but Live at Daryl's House is great on its own. Hopefully it will come back with new episodes. 🖐 Wisconsin...beer and summerfest coming soon!

Except that solo was from a synth keyboard, possibly a Moog. An electric piano is what you hear on Billy Joel - "Just The Way You Are", The Doors - "Riders On The Storm" among others. The most commonly used brands/models are Wurlitzer or Fender Rhodes.

As a teen growing up in the 70's, I loved the music of Hall & Oates. The local radio station in Tarboro, NC played many of their tunes that were popular back then. Such a great musical duo with terrific voices.

You can make an analysis of the music of a Brazilian singer called Guilherme de Sá, specifically "Deo Vero" and "Lonely" there he has an incredible vocal technique it is interesting how he makes a roller coaster of tones

It isn't like this here, but in the '80s - as many folks did - Daryl Hall had epic hair! I remember wishing that I could get my hair to look like that ... I definitely had no idea how much time it probably took to get his hair to look that way, or I wouldn't have wished for it 😄 It's also interesting to see how this version differs from what I bet was the second release, the one I'm more accustomed to. Normally we get your reaction to a newer version of a song!

They were the second..what was called Blue Eyed soul. The first were the Righteous Brothers. Great stuff.

That is a mini-Moog synth, not an electric piano. Electric Piano is what you hear on songs like Billy Joel - "Just The Way You Are" and The Doors - "Riders On The Storm". The two most commonly used are a Wurlitzer, or a Fender Rhodes. Saxophone was used for the solo on the album version.

The Bass player was definately the 'Unsung Hero' of this rendition!
