Yeah, a lot of online horror tries too hard to be edgy and my favorite thing about this series is that some of the meat monsters are harmless. Thinking through their biology and establishing what they eat, how they reproduce and so on is also a wonderful touch that brings them to life. Being dour and spooky all the time is frankly unrealistic, so adding details that are superfluous (or even goofy) ironically makes the world feel more grounded.

The most horrifying part of the harvester video is that the venom is a super potent anti-coagulant. Meaning once stung, the kid and mother basically started bleeding out from every orifice, including the eyes. If you are familiar with what a toxic dose of something like warfarin would do to a person, you know just how horrifying death by harvester would be.

In my opinion, the Storybook references the Prince as the Singularity, and the Critters as Humanity. Humanity was suffering due to food shortages and their treatment of the planet, and a select few decided to use the Singularity to save them. When it woke up, it saw a species suffering... And decided to help them evolve. So Carnis was created.

Oh i assumed the opposite. I thought the storybook was telling the origins of the cult that worship these creatures. The storybook probably being some type of propaganda. The island in the story book is the same island that the singularity probably lives in and some time ago i assume some human was captivated by it and persuaded, since these creatures are inteligente to support the Carnis cause. So the prince/the founder created a cult and using human "magic" aka technology(like television) he set out to help with their food problem. I thought the snake was an example on how the cult helped, feeding humans into the snake. But all this is speculation. Either way is m pretty interested on how this goes

Important inclusion here is that the Carnis’ appearance is circa 1930, the start of the Great Depression in the United States that impacted the entire world, lead to homelessness and food shortages. I can absolutely see people rowing to a deserted island in Canada and finding this massive entity that could provide them “a way to fix their home” when governments around the world were failing to help people.

What if its the other way around - what if the critters were some kind of carnis, the prince was the singularity and the food he created for them was humans? I mean its established that humans are a source of food for quite a few of the carnis species. Plus with all of the brainwashing and propoganda by the red triangle guys, it sounds like theyre almost trying to keep the human population complacent with everything? Along those lines, the storybook could be propaganda too.

You'd probably see the rise of purchasable beacons that can be activated in the case of mimic attack. You know, assuming there isn't a massive cover up about them. From the sounds of how they predate on people you'd also see the prevalence of armored clothing especially armored gorgets and collars made out of Kevlar or other aramid fibers with metal or ceramic plates as a core. Security system sales would explode, firearms sales go through the roof (good thing that edit occurred because a mimic would absolutely be vulnerable to firearms) and you'd probably see relaxing on laws about booby trapping a home. These things would absolutely get exterminated and their threat capacity at night reduced by night vision devices and thermal imagery. Tl;Dr fuck em, they're going to all die

This comment may be only tangentially related but I thought it'd be interesting to point out that the Trimming lifespan first being reported as 2-4 years and then later as 8-12 seems unusual at first but this is likely due to differing contexts more than a mistake on Darian's part. Wild animals can have very different, usually shorter, lifespans compared to their counterparts living in captivity, an example of this is bearded dragon lizards which live to an average of 5-8 years in the wild but can reach 8-12 in captivity.

The story describes the prince being thrown from the ship, I think that would be whatever the origin of the Carnis is falling from the sky and its origins to earth, where it remained dormant for a long time, like the prince. Then in 1930 humans, probably scientists found it and deemed it dangerous, but someone woke it up, and now it's awake and active.

Like, if the prince is some alien species then sure, flesh creatures kinda like a twisted version of the main species of the planet makes sense. But if he were some ancient human? Or sleeping god? What the fuck did people look like back then? Or has he been asleep for so long that the only thing he can remember are a facsimile of what he once knew? Why meat? Why not plants? Meat specifically? It's pretty interesting to think about the carnis as some being's (whether it be old, deific, or alien) interpretation of what a living thing is. What makes something living? "Uhhh... muscles? Some blood? Organs for sure... it can eat. Annndd uhhh. Yknow what? It can eat and move everything else ain't too important." Like if you tried to get a middle schooler to build a living creature.

I'll be honest, I just watched the mimic video (and laughed, because it was way more comedic than scary) and I think this series has quite a few flaws. While I do love world building, I don't really like the idea of just flat out explaining the creatures in text. It makes the following "shocking" videos far less effective. I'm also not sure how much the creator is aiming for actual horror, since it feels like 80% comedy (trimming, mimic) with horror undertones.

Pro tip for aspiring horror creators: if you have a costume or prop that looks silly, have it onscreen as little as possible. Shaky cam, blur, static, do whatever you can to obscure it and it'll be way scarier. Spielberg did it for Jaws and it's a technique that still works today.

I love analog horror analyses because they serve as a reason to rewatch an already amazing series. Gotta say, I love how in Living Meat Research every bit of info is also manually drawn (by the creator themselves I imagine), it really says a lot about how much thought is put into the design and inner working of the creatures with the series. Also the way it hides the mimic as a trump card right before showing seemingly harmless first and second entries... and then mimic being the third out of seven presented had me going "it gets worse?!", and I love that there's variety to it. Thank you for the analysis, and thank you Darian (if you read this somehow lol) for an amazing series. Can't wait to see where this will go next.

I have a couple thoughts regarding the storybook and what is being told. - I agree that the Prince is most likely a Singularity, the numbers of which stated to be unknown and most information being blotted out by the government (which may have long since been corrupted by the cult). Based on the way the manner of travel for this royal family is described, it does sound extraterrestrial in nature. - At the beginning, it is said that the Prince was separated from his parents after falling and becoming lost at sea. This could be alluding to the surrounding meteor belt around our solar system, which could've caused such issues (don't know if this one's a stretch or not). - In terms of the Critters, I do believe they represent humanity, but not all of it. Specifically, you could say two groups. The majority who decided against touching the Prince is one group, those few who fed the Prince are another. This will become relevant in a second. - The Critters aren't all of humanity. Instead, it's likely to only be a portion. At least, those who discovered the Prince/Singularity in a resting state. This may have been some members of the government or a research team of some sort. - The latter faction mentioned earlier, those who fed the Prince, may be the very beginning stage of the cult. Those who ally with the Prince, believe what he does can be of help to the world, etc. This cult may have originated from some environmental scientists in this hypothetical research team, and we have seen a substantial portion of them nowadays having great concerns for the destruction of the world, trying to find a way to alleviate it. Though this discovery doesn't take place in our current time, it's not impossible for scientists then to predict the decline in environmental health. Does play into the possible symbolism of the entire series as well. - The aiding Critters, possibly the future cult, may have been researching or communicating with the Prince/Singularity in that pursuit to heal the environment. At some point, he may have come to comprehend that intention (I'm not certain on this part) and proven he was capable of doing so with their help. - The Prince is stated to have left and be searching for his kingdom, in order to bring them to help the Critters. If we were to transfer this context to what is happening in "real life", it could be presented by the systematic and intermittent sounds that the Singularity makes. This may be the attempt to call for that help from the kingdom, speaking at a certain frequency to repeat a particular message. It could also be further referenced by the way that the Trimmings bear interest in television, radio, and satellites as forms of communication or even a possible way to gain contact with their origins, the Singularity. . What the hell have I done. Uh- yeah, that's my interpretation of events. I don't know if it could be considered fully credible, as I've solely watched this analysis and drawn from the information presented in it. Though, it interested me enough to think about more deeply. I found it to be pretty comprehensive, from what I understood. I'd appreciate hearing other thoughts, though. I didn't exactly cover all I could.

That's one of the scariest parts of Vita Carnis for me as well! I think it's so scary because, as sucky as life can be sometimes, we never have to constantly be on the look-out for predators, but Mimics destroy that relative safety. Since they can hide basically anywhere, nowhere is safe, and there's nothing you can do about them as one person, as they seem to be resilient against most weapons.

The critters may represent fauna in general and the Prince might have been able to communicate with any animal, or the critters DO represent humans and the off-shoot that fed the Prince were the cultists. I'm kind of leaning towards the latter since it was made into a storybook and humans tend to exaggerate when it comes to food shortages and overpopulation and it seems like the flavor enhancer is meant to "solve" food shortages by making the simplest of food taste better.

I think the Giant meat snake is one animal not two separate ones. It was discovered during the chaos of the second world war probably in North West Europe by American soldiers and weather it be the forces of Nazi Germany, a European cult or a combination of both, it grew to massive size probably by being fed concentration camp victims and prisoners of war. The Americans brought the snake back across the Atlantic, housed it in a secret facility and continued to feed it dead bodies (or lives ones who knows) until by 1947 it had grown to an even larger length. The project is under the unknown military officer's command. Perhaps the facility is on the Island in the Hudson which would explain the buildings that were already there by the 1970s. Notably, 1947 is the same year as the so called "Roswell Incident" where a UFO is purported to have crashed in United States so 1947 is synonmous with the US government engaged in skulduggerous activity with the supernatural.
