Lucas beck That sounds like something Dark Souls would do. Maybe not armor but the Souls version would turn your boots into lasagna trays and reduce your movement. I mean, we’re talking about a game series where store NPCs can be permanently killed or permanently agro’d.

Super Hydlide was foreshadowing. It was warning you, Jared. It, as the best of the Hydlides, was trying to save you from what was to come. This is a Sega game, and it is a joke.

Hydlide first came out in Japan in 1984. There was no North American version until 1989, by which point there were buckets of superior games to compare it to, notably The Legend of Zelda (1986). But it was an innovative game when it first came out. Prominent releases from 1984 were games like Tetris, Duck Hunt, Paperboy, Marble Madness and Excitebike-there were few RPG games at the time, and close to zero action RPGs. Of course The Legend of Zelda made Hydlide look like hot trash, but for more than a year, in Japan, Hydlide was legitimately the most interesting game of its kind. Games were primitive, especially before the NES-keep in mind that in North America, Pac-Man was still a top-seller as late as 1982!

+Ruin If we assume bee sting actually stands for a number, and the scale is lower=worse and higher=better, than according to Google calculator and a few test substitutions for bee sting I think that actually makes it 10 times worse. Which, judging from ProJared's reaction at the very start of the video, might not be far from the truth.

Still the best intro to ANY of his videos. I legit watched it numerous times before getting anywhere close to watching the full video proper. If you've seen the reviews for the first 2 games you'll understand EXACTLY why he would be making that face and noise upon dealing with another Hydlide game.

Of course, when Zelda came out Hydlide was made totally obsolete, but before Zelda it was probably the only adventure RPG available, and when you have nothing similar to compare a game to even the most flawed titles can seem good.

I DESPERATELY hope the Internet takes this as a lesson to never make their judgement until all sides are heard. The fucked thing is that there's no way in hell this will happen because the Internet, nay, humanity as a whole never learns from their mistakes. It's a shame, it really is. Elder Scrolls Arena came a year before this game and basically did what Virtual Hydlide attempted to but better. Arena isn't amazing either but at least it's playable

I Like the fact that he redo the same jokes and phrases from the original Hydlide review! and it is still funny in a different way! XD (so many SAME things to list... LOVE IT)

So many years later and I still keep coming back to hear those first 7 seconds. Absolute highest grade ghoulish screech.

That 40 billion combinations jab gave me a good chuckle!

In the manual it says "The *hit title* HYDLIDE is back!" Hit title? More like HIT THE TITLE BECAUSE IT SUCKS SO BAD!

To be fair, the princess of the setting is essentially dead, the castle has been taken over by a demon dragon, and the area has become a wasteland. The fact that the only person around willing and able to fight back is a peasant is actually quite believable.

This needs a HD remake.

Thanks for the review, this game actually impressed me a lot more than I expected, being one of the earliest 3D RPGs ever made.

Honestly, your best opening, it cracks me up every single time, and an awesome way to retire the old bit. One of my fav reviews of yours!
