Vintage Red Trangia 27 Kit with Optimus Nova Burner, A review of sorts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ramblings, thoughts, comments, and observations about a vintage circa 1990 red non-stick Trangia 27 kit (not the 90th Anniversary kit).
This video also shows the period correct Trangia multi-fuel burner option, essentially an Optimus Nova in a Trangia produced mounting 'cup'. The Nova shown is an early production, made in Sweden version.
Stove fuel line and pump feature a CEJN quick release fitting.
I also use this set up with a BernieDawg silent burner cap, and it works very well.
I apologize for the lower speaking volume when I step away from the camera.

I have loved my ~2004 Nova for around 20 years now, and it has been my go to stove. While looking into Trangia and alcohol stoves I learned about the Nova cup that Trangia has and it was all over for me... I have since purchased a 25 kit, a 27 kit, the Nova cup, and an even older Nova off eBay that needs some parts and TLC but it looks like I should be able to get it going. Pretty soon I will be drowning in dependable, modular, Swedish cooksets and stoves that I can mix and match to my hearts content depending on the season and trip type. Sweet! Thanks for the video.... great content and cool red Trangia as well. Cheers

👍👍👍 Nice, very nice .. thanks for sharing 😊. I have the Optimus 8R Hunter Stove .. similar Burner Mechanism. Bought new in the mid-70's and still in regular use. Also in my my kit is a little Trangia 28-t Mini Set .. love it! Complaining .. some will 'chirp' about just about everything. In this day of 'millisecond gratification', having to wait or pre-plan for a anything is considered close to a disaster 🙄. But then, I was born in '50, we grew up differently, accepted and adapted accordingly 😏. This morning's 'brunch' (Oats with additions) is right now ready to be done using a Trangia-clone kettle and a Tatonka 18cm SS bowl and a home-made alcohol burner. I think I'll take out the 8R tomorrow. Once again, a good share .. take care ..

It’s a really cool setup. I’ve been playing around with the $17 bulin butane burners from eBay. I put one in each of my kits. My current multifuel option is an Optimus 111t burner with a thread adapter to a Primus pump. It can run butane, gasoline/white gas or even kerosene/diesel. Theoretically it’ll run alcohol with the special jet and restrictor tube. I’m looking for one of those orphaned nova burners. Gary Adams makes a nova to Primus hose adapter that basically lets you run butane in the nova and lets you buy spare pumps on Amazon... What the hell? People complain about the flip stop feature?! Flip stop is awesome. Primus has that too. Thanks for the video!

That’s the best Trangia kit I’ve seen with the Nova burner! I’m def going to convert my Trangia from alcohol to this. Ps the 4.5 liter billy pot would be a good add on. The whole 27 fits inside it.

I agree. When cooking for larger groups, and often with me and my kids, I'll assemble a 27 kit and put it inside the early 70's Trangia billy kit I have. The larger pot comes in handy sometimes.

i see the older pump style does not have a shut off valve at the pump. the CEJN connector basically when disconnected from the fuel line acts to stop fuel from escaping the pump head.

Greetings from Wales in the UK! Beautiful Trangia set and I always keep my eyes open for the limited edition red pots and pans from the 80's. They're rarer than gold dust and only very occasionally come up on ebay, albeit not as the full set that you have which is unfortunate. I own a Trangia 25-1 HA (all hard-anodised, including both windscreens). I love it as I can't stand cooking on bare aluminium - especially when preparing acidic foods such as tomatoes or cooking with vinegar etc. Bare aluminium is also a bitch to clean whereas hard anodised aluminium is almost as non-stick as 'non-stick' and is highly durable. My other favourite stove is the Optimus Polaris multifuel stove, but Trangia's are simply bomb proof with no parts that can be lost or damaged - just the o-ring in the burner lid maybe every 10 years or more. Fantastic Scandinavian engineering at its best! Thank you for your upload mate, I thoroughly enjoyed it! -Chris 🖒

@@AndrewOliverHome thanks for the reply 👍🏻 seems like a great system, that way if the pot stand is folded rather than removed and attaching the stove to the trangia you have the flexibility of using the stove separate to the trangia while also using alcohol with trangia so being able to cook on two stoves at once 🤔

Never seen a nonstick coffe pot before, thats cool. I got a X2 Multifuel burner that works with gas cans as well. Does this classic one do that also? Nice review!

The set up shown here will not work with canister gas. The stove itself will burn canister gas, but the fuel line needs to be swapped to a Primus type that has a Lindal valve. An adapter is necessary to mount this hose onto the Nova burner assembly. BernieDawg has a video showing this adapter, and how he makes them, and goes into more detail about this "conversion". I also have a previous video showing a BernieDawg adapter and Primus fuel hose on this Nova, but I ran white gas through it. One thing that is of note is that it would not be usable in a Trangia 27, as the adapter makes the hose stick out too far and does not clear the windscreen base. I guess you could modify (cut a slot or opening) for clearance, but I don't want to modify my Trangia base just for one specific application that I rarely use. I have not tried using it in a 25 series, but I think there is enough room for it due to the larger diameter of the base.

May I ask what breed of dog yours is please? Totally adorable!! I've got the same stove without the gas burner but still love it loads... I cut cloths out to fit the bottom of the bowls and base of the pan so they won't scratch anymore. Enjoy your trangia!

The adapter cup is still available as a spare part through Trangia, part number 788205. It is the adapter used in the Primus/Trangia X2 multifuel kit. When I purchased mine (years ago), I had a friend of mine in Sweden buy directly from Trangia, and he shipped it to me. If/when Trangia gets their international shipping set up on their webshop, they should be readily available worldwide. shop.trangia.se/en/spare-parts/burner-cup-primus-system.html
