Demonstrating Different Trangia Alcohol Stove Cold Weather Set-Ups w/Carbon Felt

Спорт

Demonstrations of two different cold weather Trangia stove arrangements. Non-scientific. No measuring cups to check snow and/or water volumes, no gram scales to measure pre or post burn fuel and/or stove weights. Your mileage may vary. Boil tests are way too dependent on so many different factors to be accurate in all situations.
This video shows the factory Trangia preheating set up (preheating cup and aluminum plate), cup has been modified with a carbon felt pad rather than the original fiberglass pad. The preheating pad burns under the burner, warming the fuel and the burner, allowing for a rapid "bloom" in cold weather.
It also shows a slight variation of wawhiker's felt pad "wick" for instant lighting/instant simmer flame. In my adaptation of this concept, I only have the carbon felt up to the Trangia recommended fill level, and this allowed a pretty rapid "bloom" with no other preheating.
Both of these burners were filled wigh denatured alcohol the night prior to these lightings. The low overnight temperature was 3 degrees Farenheit, and was approximately 5 degrees Farenheit at the time of these demonstrations.
I apologize for the couple choppy edits.

Trangia is the ultimate cooker for cold conditions. I have never used anything else. 🧐🇬🇧

light the fuel on the heating stand first. put water in before snow, even just a bit the snow will melt much much faster. tnx for sharing the video The only advantage I really see for the felt is spillage - heat from the middle is fuel wasted

Thank you very much for posting this video. Yours is the only video I found that actually shows how to use all the components of that winter kit correctly with the trangia cookset.

This video showed that the Trangia can do the job even in the cold winter months. Obviously, it was built to last.

I really like the carbon felt idea. I've always seen people put the felt to high. This method with the felt lower really works great. Thanks for sharing.

👍👍👍 .. interesting .. thanks for sharing. I've been mulling over doing something similar .. perhaps now is the time to give it a go. I recently read a post from a guy from Taiwan who is playing around with using 'wicking' in his Trangia Burner. His setup consisted of Steel Wool in the bottom of the Burner, rolled Carbon Felt on top and then topped with a disc of SS Mesh cut to a snug fit which keeps everything in place. I presume that the Steel Wool allows for liquid fuel 'sloshing' at the bottom and thus good 'wicking' up to the external Jets whilst the Carbon Felt acts as the internal 'Wick' .. at the same time protecting the Steel Wool from direct contact with the flame. His comparison test looked impressive .. the 'wicked' burner giving a 'bluer' flame than the unwicked one. Blooming was good. A test on a Trangia Copy (w alternate smaller jet holes) did not produce an as effective 'Bloom'. An additional bonus was his 'knock over and roll' test. Absolutely no spillage from a newly-filled burner. This carries weight with me as here in Switzerland, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those setting fire to their forest, albeit accidental .. with eye-watering fines being the order of the day. He did say that he was experimenting with using Ceramic / Glass Wool in place of the Carbon Felt / Steel Wool .. so I'm waiting to see how that turns out.

Always nice to see a trangia in action in sub zero (Celsius) and even better to see a mod. And even better to see it done right.

I think I like the standard way with the factory preheater better because the carbon felt will take up volume in the cup and reduce the amount of time it will operate.

Great video. Looks like at 6:58 it’s started a bloom. Great video

Update .. Carbon Felt. Since my previous response, I filled my Trangia Burner with a combination of Ceramic Wool and Carbon Felt .. the Wool at the bottom, topped with a tight roll of Carbon Felt. So far, very good results. 'Blooming' takes a little longer .. it still burns with gusto, especially if enclosed in a windscreen, albeit, somewhat more gently, especially when using the simmer ring. The gentler burn suits my style of cooking and is thus for me, a bonus. Lowest temperature test so far has been 3°C and I rustled up an Oats, Toast and Coffee Breakfast on the river bank without a hitch. Am waiting for some sub-zero temps to test further. A huge Bonus is the reduced fuel 'spillage' hazard .. something of note, considering the Swiss absolute lack of a sense of humour with those who set their forests and the grass in their recreational areas afire 😏.

I hope you got to enjoy a hot drink after your icy experiment. Shame you didn't have a 3rd burner to leave in the standard mode, without the pre-heater or carbon felt wick. Would adding fuel to the channel running beneath the burner holes make any noticeable different to the burner's start-up? How does the old simmer ring compare to the new style?

Very nice video, Curious was the felt carbon used to wick the fuel to the top of burner for easier lighting in cold instead of the trangia pre-burner plate?

The felt level was not up to the top as seen in some other videos, and I was hoping to see a few different results: instant lighting in the cold with no preheat (achieved), a normal "bloom" and normal stove function (not fully achieved), additional fuel capacity (unknown at this time). I guess I was also hoping the carbon felt would act as some kind of internal preheating and after heating the burner it would act as additional fuel capacity, which is one reason I did not have carbon felt all the way to the top. There was some discussion on a stove forum about Trangia cold weather set ups, and I wanted to do some experimenting with some carbon felt I had laying around. This is wawhiker's original video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gYGZxMaDfJCvhKQ.html And there were a couple follow up videos by Hiram Cook: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWiM2aaHk9W2p7g.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKuupaaTcd2XkbA.html There may be other carbon felt in Trangia burner videos, but I have not looked too extensively to find them. Yes, the Trangia with the cabon felt lit right away in the cold temperature, and was able to have an immediate simmer flame, which is something you are unable to do in a "regular" Trangia burner until the stove warms up and "blooms" While there was a "bloom" with the felt inside, the "bloom" flame was considerably smaller that it would have been minus the felt. I have come to the conclusion that the carbon felt simply overpowers the regular function of the burner, and the felt acts as one big wick in the center of the burner.. In addition to immediate lighting in the cold, I was hoping to find that the felt would act as additional fuel storage and that the burner would operate normally after the "bloom". This was not the case, in terms of operation. The felt might provide additional fuel capacity (I have not experimented with this possibility). While an immediate simmer flame in the cold, or a prolonged low powered burn from fuel storage in the felt might be beneficial to some, these are not important to me and I think I'll be removing the felt from the inside and if it's really cold, I'll just use the factory preheating pad underneath.

Looks like you can not improve a burner that is in production for about 100 years without much modification. The Swedish army has experience with very cold weather. 😉
